...The film starts, very unusually, on the death barge with the Grim Reaper at the helm. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

There is no need to tell us that as it doesn?t help the plot at all. It seemed to me to be shoved into the story. It?s the old adage that a good story needs excitement and sex and I felt that the author just shoved that episode in to keep to the formula. Don?t get me wrong, I?m no prude and I don?t object to the subject matter. It just didn?t fit right there. A study in Scarlett

Advantages: A tremendous story
Disadvantages: Racist and sentimentalised in a lot of ways

..."Gone with the Wind" is a marvellous film, despite its many flaws. The epic sweep of the story, the impeccable casting, the costumes, the music ... I could go on and on and on. It's actually one of those films that shouldn't work, but does. No-one could accuse Vivien Leigh of being a great actress - but just look at that face. The story itself is racist, overlong and sentimentalised. It's view of the Old South is rose-tinted to say the very least. Hattie McDaniel (Mammy), nominated for an Oscar, could not have normally gone into the theatre where the film was premiered because she was black. However, like some other films, it works despite all its faults. You would be hard hearted indeed not to identify and sympathise with Scarlett as she cuts a wilful, selfish, charming, desperate dash through Georgia in search of what she thinks...

The beginning of an adventure

Advantages: interesting ideas, well thought out plot with some chilling twists
Disadvantages: too much information that some times prevents the flow of the story

...wonder if the book is actually cursed, especially when she finds out the secret that has lead to so many disappearences, unfortunately this has also lead to her being followed to some suspicious and violent men. Scarlett Thomas has created an extremely interesting and complicated character and storyline within The End of Mr Y, Ariel Manto being the main character, whose full depth and history is never completely revealed. It is hinted that there had been problem in her childhood that has lead to her problems with relationships, with slight mentions of self harm in her childhood, and her mother who was so caught up in her own life and the search for enlightenment. Ariel's relationship status at the beginning of the book is complicated, as she is involved with a man who is married and it is a relationship purely based on a sexual status...

Now call me tight (no that wasn?t an invite), but I like bargains and freebies and am not ashamed to say so. My quest took me to enough sites to hire DVDs for about four months so far (with plenty to come too).
