Sci Fi or Surreal

Advantages: Often amusing, and always educational.
Disadvantages: Too many advertisments.

...As with all broadcasting monopolies these days, there is always something that stands out in the crowd. It could be simply something unusual, or it could be much deeper, a mixture of fantasy and reality. The Sci-Fi channel holds to both areas in a big way, and is always entertaining. Unlike normal TV channels, the Sci-Fi channel is heavily made up with docudrama and classic cult movies, but along with these you can also view some of the more amazing, and often unheard of things. One of my favourite programs is fortean TV, which is based on the monthly paper "fortean times". The whole show, and of course paper, is about things like ghosts, aliens, miracles and the strange inexplicable things that scientists can't make sense of. It's really interesting to see how ghost hunters work, or as I did recently, watch top scientists...

The Ultimate Sci-Fi Quiz DVD game

Advantages: Tom Baker is entertaining
Disadvantages: The game play is slow and irritating

...Tom Baker's Ultimate Sci-Fi Quiz starts well - Tom Baker is, as ever, entertaining and he doesn't take himself too seriously. The game allows for one or two player games, and the premise is that you are captain of a spaceship that has fallen through a wormhole and is lightyears from Earth. You were on a research mission, and it's imperative that the data you collected is returned to Earth. Each question you answer correctly brings you closer to Earth; wrong answers leave you where you are. In a 2-player game there's the added hazard of encountering another wormhole - an incorrect answer here will swap your place with the other contestant if you're ahead and answer correctly. There are 15 categories of questions, ranging from different decades to 'Earth in Peril'. The 'Literature' category isn't really about books, though, more like...

Review of Tom Baker's Ultimate Sci-Fi Quiz (DVDi)

A sci-fi fans every dream come true??

Advantages: Excellent for sixties/seventies anoraks, some good sci fi specials
Disadvantages: Too much "Bubble headed boobies!!!"

...At first look the Sci-Fi channel UK seems to be a fans dream come true. 24 hour science fiction programming? Excellent!! Or is it?? If you like sixties and seventies sci-fi then it is perfect. If you prefer your sci-fi more upto date then stick to Sky 1. I will admit that there are some good films and programs on, especially the occasional 'Making of..' documentary. A person can only take so much 'Lost in Space' or 'six million dollar man' etc. What spoiled it for me was reading the latest issue of the official 'Sci-fi channel' magazine. This is an american publication and included a program listing for the sci-fi channel USA. What a difference! Brand new programming, coming soon the new DUNE series! new series based on the Invisible Man (Reading the article it looks good!!) I suppose if we wait long enough we will get these...

Review of Sci-Fi

Sci Fi with a Twist of SILK.

Advantages: A SPOOKY FILM !!
Disadvantages: Nothing

...or of ghosts? And then things turn really scary because Hashimoto has plans of his own. ~Opinions~ A SUPERB FILM ! Right from the start there is a creeping atmosphere surrounding the movie. The whole film is wonderfully lit, it reminded me a bit of 'Bladerunner' and of 'The Grudge' with a superb twist of Sci-Fi. The plot zooms along at a great pace and is very easy to grasp. When the detective leaves the house to follow the ghost of the young boy things really get spooky. Oh and the title "Silk" well that's where the Sci-fi comes in, sorry no spoilers! The only downside for some people will be the subtitles all the way through. Didn't bother me though. Review of Silk - DVD

Triple Sci-Fi Fun.

Advantages: Kids Sci-fi Fun
Disadvantages: Quite dated.

...and the Thargons take control of Earths fate as the Tomorrow people find themselves in jail. Episode 3: Standing Alone The sorsons have not left but instead try to form an alliance with the US in order to battle the Thargons. Episode 4: All in the Mind The tomorrow people are caught between the Sorsons, the Thargons and the US as they try for peace witht he aid of the Galactic Commitee. What will Earths fate be? This was the last of the 'old tomorrow people' they would return but with a different line up. The show was a kids fun Sci-Fi show but later series tried to move to a more teenage and even an adult viewing audience, it never really worked. The plots to each show are quite good and move along at a fair pace. The dialogue however at times is not too good and in places awful. The science would not stand up to scrutiny...

Review of The Tomorrow People - Series 6-8 - Complete (Box Set) (DVD)

The Future... 30 years ago!

Advantages: An original premise.
Disadvantages: Mixed quality of episodes.

...It seems a lot of the TV series that were originally shown in the 1970's have all made a bit of a recent comeback, mainly on ITV4 who seem to have purchased the whole ITC back catalogue. Another shining example of a series that should have gone further was Space 1999. The future was always a bit of a grey area when it came to seventies sci-fi, you could work on the lunar surface and travel between the Earth and the Moon easily and yet seventies fashions hadn't actually gone out of style!! It was a shame that this program, which was a high budget Gerry Anderson Production never went on for a third series, if a third series was made it would have ironed out the majority of the issues from the series before that caused the cancellation of the program itself. The premise of the story is good and an angle that hadn't been approached before...

Review of Sci-Fi - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Most complex sci fi story arc ever

Advantages: Most involving sci fi
Disadvantages: None

...Without a doubt Babylon 5 is one of the best Sci fi shows to hit our screens over the last few years. It beats all of the Star Trek attempts into a cocked hat. Basically B5 tells the 5 year story of a space station (Babylon 5 itself) and its involvement in a war between the Shadows ( an evil alien race) and the Vorlons (a not so evil race) that threatens the galaxy itself. While not the most original story, it is handled wonderfully with conversations in one episode having implications in another episode further down the story arc. It really is like War & Peace in space, it covers most conditions of the human condition such as love, hatred, honour , spiritually, death, and friendship. It was shot over 100 episodes and 3 feature length films (4 if you include the first episode). I really can't recommend this highly enough. Note...

Review of Sci-Fi - Babylon 5

Moon - a thoughtful sci-fi

Advantages: Visually stunning, superb central performance, clever plot
Disadvantages: Weak ending, confusing in parts

...or cry with a single facial expression. I would suggest that if you are a fan of his performances in other roles, this film is a must-see. Kevin Spacey's GERTY is perfectly delivered, very much in the style of HAL from 2001:A Space Odyssey. The studied empathy of his voice is just right for a machine that is approximating a human reaction to another person and gives it a very sinister air. SET: The look of the film is stunning with vast moonscapes contrasted with 1970s sci-fi style interiors for the lunar base. The 'external' shots were apparently done using models which somehow look more real than the too-perfect CGI shots viewers have become accustomed to in modern sci-fi. The set really gives a sense of desolation and just how isolated Sam is from the world he longs to return to. SUMMARY: Moon is a visually stunning film...
