Doing a Maths degree
Review of Mathematical Sciences by
pmytcmdc
Advantages: Very laid back
Disadvantages: can be difficult without Further Maths
...Hello to anybody out there wanting to do a degree in Maths. Oh there aren't many of you then. Maths at Nottingham is a great course. This is backed up by the department getting 23 out of 24 in an independent assessment. The course can be as demanding as you want it to be. What I mean is that if you work constantly for 30 minutes a night then the course will be very straight forward. However i would not recommend, as I did, leaving the majority of your project 'till the last minute. Overall the course is wonderful if you like Maths however there aren't that many people that do....

BSES Expeditions
Review of BSES Expeditions by
rachel_holley
Advantages: Great destinations, experience of a lifetime, registered charity so not profiting from you, just go for it!
Disadvantages: Ummm.... cost might put people off, although it's pretty standard for this kind of thing it does seem a lot of money at first. You can raise it though!
...I didn't actually go on a gap year expedition, although I have heard they are good. I went on one of their 6 week summer expeditions, to the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrghyzstan, in summer 99.
The expedition was fairly typical of the summer ones, with a little over a week spent on a science project, some time doing glacier training, ice climbing etc. and then a two week trek phase. The different types of science work varies with the particular expedition, but often includes ecology-related projects, surveying, geology, glaciology etc. I did a geology project and really enjoyed it. Overall however I think the quality of the science done varies quite a bit, beware if that is your main reason for going, the expeditions are primarily set up for the adventure type stuff.
The expeditions usually cost around £2700, although it varies from year...

Great minds
Review of Biological Sciences by
MykReeve
Advantages: Excellent lecturers and standards of research work
Disadvantages: They work you hard!
...The Biological Sciences department at Oxford University boasts some great minds, and some excellent lecturers. It actually consists of four separate sections; the Zoology Department, which shares a building with Experimental Psychology, the Plant Sciences department (formerly the department of Forestry), the Genetics department, and the recently built Epidemiology building. The Zoology department really excels, offering particularly good Animal Behaviour and Evolution courses - lectures are given by many great speakers including Richard Dawkins and Mark Ridley. The late William Hamilton produced a lot of the most seminal papers on the evolution of sex and altruism here. The epidemiology department is also very good, and the new building is superb. All undergraduates are obliged to carry out a project investigating some aspect of biology...

Makes Science Fun
Review of Dorling Kindersley - My First Amazing Science Explorer by
poet831
Advantages: Makes Science fun and interesting, lots of stuff to do.
Disadvantages: None
...classwork. Making them more satisfied with themselves, and giving them the urge to learn more.
Priced around £19.99 this is well worth the money. Yet again, Dorling Kindersley have produced a quality product that is worth far more than what it costs. This requires Windows 95/98, with 12MB RAM for 95 and 16MB RAM for 98. They suggest a minimum of 486DX /33MHz, an 8-bit sound card ( will not run without a sound card) and an internet connection to access Dorling Kindersley's Science Web Site - where children can play interactive games and find out about more exciting projects....

Nottingham Uni - Computer Science
Review of Computer Science & Information Technology by
jsbnotts
Advantages: new campus, great atmosphere, great department, BCS accredited
Disadvantages: some lecturers, communication between staff
...I'm currently in my second year at Nottingham University reading BSc in E-Commerce and Digital Business - a degree course offered by the School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSiT) and also run in conjunction with the Business School. My course is VERY similar to the single honours Computer Science degree.
Why CSiT @ Nottingham Uni?
--------------------------
The major factor for me was the brand new campus built in 1998 which is a wonderful piece of modern architecture and very environmentally friendly. It has a very nice lake and an upside down shaped library and computer centre - a nice peceful environment in which to study.
The School of CSiT has up-to-date technologies and loads of computers for students use. Lecture theatres are very ncie and modern and contain all the latest projection/presentation equipment...

Community & Family History 19th & 20th c
Review of Social Sciences by
andylong
Advantages: good content, interesting
Disadvantages: heavy going workload
...This course DA301, studying Family and communtiy History in the 19th and 20th centuries is a direct follow on for anyone who is interested in either genealogy or local history. the course work is heavy, but allows you to research topics of your choice, within the framework of the course. It does invlove a lot of reading and research, the OU provide you with 4 book on communities and history and you need to buy another.
The course is centered around 6 Tutor Marked Assignments, one 3500 word project and a final exam.
This is a level 3 course and requires a lot of time, I would only attempt it if you can put aside at least 5 hours a week....

What can it be...
Review of Everything that starts with W ... by
jamez
Advantages: fun, fast, educational
Disadvantages: slow, and often abused
...I’ve been set this challenge by Smaggs76, she made up the challenge and posted one herself first. Its the mystery "what am I?" challenge. (Hence the W).
"It surrounds us and binds us"
"A long long time ago" it just didn't exist.
But now its everywhere from Rio to Tokyo, from Berlin to Los Angeles.
It enthralls us and annoys us.
It informs and educates us.
It can alienate or it can associate.
It is used by children and adults alike.
By governments and by terrorists.
It is quite hard to describe to your grandparents.
And it all started as a science project in a university in America!
I hope this isn't too hard, but I didn't want to make it too easy. I'll give you the answer as a comment. So no peeking!...
