Infected - Scott Sigler

Advantages: Good pace, quite gruesome in parts.
Disadvantages: Not 'deep' enough.

...Infected - Scott Sigler. Please not Ciao....this is not an audio book. 'When you hear the voices it's already too late'. I have to say, I find writing book reviews particularly difficult. There is a thin line between enticing someone with enough plot and information to encourage them to read the book for themselves, and too much plot so that they pretty much don't need to read it. At just over 450 pages this is not too long, in fact I read it in 4 days, as one of my 'holiday books'. The cover was what initially attracted me to the book, and when I turned the book over, the short synopsis and recommendations from other authors persuaded me to purchase. Tilt - Scott Walker

Advantages: incredibly unique music
Disadvantages: perhaps a little too bleak at times

...Blimey - what an album! It's not, however, very likeable. Scott's previous record Climate Of Hunter, for all it's oddities, is still a collection of relatively traditional songs. Tilt isn't. But the opening "Farmer In The City" is still one of the best tracks ever recorded and still, after 12 years and goodness knows how many plays, brings me to the verge of tears at the "Paulo, take me with you..." bit. Amazing. The strings are stunningly powerful. "The Cockfighter" is weird beyond belief, especially the way Scott's voice fractures as he sings "it's a beautiful ni-HIght" which is just freaky. The minute of disturbing scratching noises at the start of the track weirds me out too. A whole new category of music - industrial classical. "Bouncer See Bouncer" goes on way too long before that lovely shaft of light, the orchestra backed...

Advantages: utterly unique - an amazing album

...How do you go about describing something that is utterly unique? I can guarantee you will never have heard an album quite like The Drift. Not even previous Scott Walker albums prepare the listener for the experience of The Drift. It is, quite simply, the most beautiful, the most emotional, the most intense and the downright scariest album you will ever hear. I can't even imagine what was going through Scott's mind to compose and create such songs. The music is an uneasy mix of conventional instruments, bass, guitar, drums, with orchestral instruments and thoroughly unconventional sounds - on one track the percussionist is thumping a side of meat, on another concrete blocks are used. Lyrically Scott seems to be trying to convey the horror of war and terrorism with oblique asides concerning 9/11, the deaths of both Mussolini...

Scott 4 - Scott Walker

Advantages: beautiful vocals, superb arrangements, great songs, very atmospheric
Disadvantages: a little unfocused at times as if Scott was trying too many different styles

...Many people, critics and fans, seem to regard Scott 4 as the absolute peak of Walker's sixties albums. A whole LP of self-penned Scott Walker songs! But to me Scott 4 comes across as a slightly confused album. On the one hand is the delicate sophistication of songs like "Boy Child" (one of his most astonishing songs, it's so very slow that time virtually stands still, those shimmering strings seeming to hover, waiting, throughout the song. And the vocal is amazing, the control that Scott has over those notes is incredible) or the heartbreaking "On Your Own Again" which both sound like an extension and refinement of the classical ideas floating around on Scott 3. On the other hand are the more upbeat tracks like "The Old Man's Back Again" (shamelessly ripped off by Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner in his offshoot band The Last Shadow...

Climate Of Hunter - Scott Walker

Advantages: stunningly arranged and sung, mysterious songs

...Climate Of Hunter is one of those albums that needs to played in its entirety. That's not much of a problem seeing as how it's only fractionally over half an hour long. "Rawhide" begins with distant cowbells and then it all kicks off with that utterly brilliant "This is how you disappear" opening line. What a delivery!! To be honest if the rest of the album was complete tripe I'd still love it just for that stunning opening. Quite why Scott chose to write a song about Cro-Magnon people and their herds is something that only Scott could ever explain, but the images of proto-men, buffalo, vast wide open plains come thick and fast. Brilliant track. I won't go through each song in detail - the superlatives would get very repetitive. ...There are lots of big shiny books out there that tell you all about digital photography and while many of these are great books, they can be a little intimidating too. Scott Kelby, author of many of the better photography boooks out there has now come up with the antidote. The Digital Photography Book is a mere 200 odd pages and is just slightly bigger than A5 in size yet contains a whole lot of useful information that will almost certainly improve anyone's photography. I was initially wondering quite what Scott Kelby had been smoking as the first few pages were somewhat surreal. Even the author noted they included lame (his word, not mine) humour. Scott Reflex 20 - A good all rounder.

Advantages: Good frame, Fast climber, Well specced. Good to upgrade over time.
Disadvantages: Tyres wear out quickly, Can't fit big tyres.

...up to the tasks as I have hit a few rocks and ramps and they still track as true as they did from new. The gears shift smoothly and the cables are sleeved almost their entire length so there is little chance of griming them up. You could even file out the final cable guide in a few minutes and run fully sleeved cables if you wanted to. The bike's geometry is well suited to fast riding and the steep saddle post angle improves things when raised up. Weaknesses: The biggest weakness on my bike were the tyres. They gripped pretty well and cleared the mud well once it got gloopy but they wore out really quickly. I don't skid everywhere but I expect my tyres to last more than a couple of months. I now run 2.1 muds instead of the 2.0 Scotts and all is good. Clearence at the front allows tyres of up to about 2.35 or 2.5 if you feel...
