Besides the sea

Advantages: "We joined the navy to see the world?."
Disadvantages: "And what did we see? We saw the sea." (Irving Berlin)

...?I must go down to the seas again, To the lonely sea and the sky.? (John Masefield) Never fear; I?m not about to start waxing lyrical about the sea. I?m more in the Irving Berlin camp than in the Masefield. I quote the lines above to illustrate the fact that even the most feverish of fanatics for the sea has to admit that maritime views are limited, consisting as they do of just two lonely elements: water and sky. And it?s stretching a point to include the sky, which can equally be seen above land as above sea. So, essentially, we?re talking about water. Water, it might be argued, is not entirely monotonous to look at. The sea has moods, which it expresses in the colour of its complexion. Sometimes, it can be a tranquil turquoise, sometimes an inscrutable indigo, sometimes a grudging greeny-grey. Occasionally, it rears...

Review of Where is the best sea view?

All at sea in the hands of a Doctor

Advantages: Nice light comedy
Disadvantages: The story and most of the film in general

...Simon Sparrow is now a qualified doctor and working as an apprentice in a practice in London. He finds that not only is he doing all the work while his boss heads off to play golf but his bosses daughter is dead set on getting her hands on him. Deciding his only recourse it to run away he does the time honoured thing of escaping to sea. He manages to get a job on board a merchant navy ship... with no women on board! A trip to a port is something all the crew look forward to but on their first stop on this trip they pick up a couple of passengers, the Chairmans' daughter and her friend, a beautiful young singer. How will the arrival of two women affect all the lonely men on board? Doctor At Sea (1955) was the second of the seven Doctor films made throughout the 50's and 60's and is, like the first in the series, very typical of British...

SEA SPRAY FOR MERMAID HAIR

Advantages: non sticky, enhances curls, hair stays soft, good hold
Disadvantages: boring packaging, not a very exciting smell

...When it comes to beauty products, make-up, hair care and the like I am a somewhat fickle individual. I have cupboards full of things I?ve used once or twice but I always seem to find an excuse to buy more. I?m sure when I go shopping for such items the sensible part of my brain just shuts down and I become an advertisers dream, seduced by rows of eye-catching packaging for things I don?t just want but obviously really really need. I bought GHD Sea Spray hairspray at the hairdressers; I find I become especially vulnerable at the hairdressers. It?s bad enough in Boots where I can just pick and choose what I want to buy but in the hairdressers where a plastic pumped, collagen filled botox beauty is persuading me that I simply cannot live without said product, I find it all too easy to give in. I?m sure I am not the only one who just...

Diamond review  (SEA) MONKEY BUSINESS!!!!

Advantages: amusing, entertaining, cheap,
Disadvantages: none really.

...It was my son's Birthday a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering around Toys r us when I came across the educational section, My son loves Science at school so I thought I would buy him something scientific. I saw these Sea Monkeys and thought they looked interesting, I didn't really know too much about them at the time but thought for £6.99 they were the perfect present. What are Sea Monkeys? *************************** Well I wasn't sure myself at first what these things are, but apparently sea monkeys are just tiny eggs in a packet that are kept in suspended animation until you hatch them into the water. They are kept in instant life crystals for years, which preserve their lives until they are ready to be hatched. Sea monkeys have been around since the late 70's but are uncommon. They are a hybrid variety of brine shrimp...

See sea holly in flower soon

Advantages: Pretty , attractive to butterflies
Disadvantages: Spikey

...I treated myself to a garden plant this weekend a sea holly, Eryngium bourgatii. This is a very pretty plant with green leaves divided into spikes in a frost pattern. This mound of dark blue/green leaves have silver veins in them. A stout branched stalk will grow up from the leaves to about 60cm. This stalk will have small dense, blue cone shaped flowers these each have a spiky silver blue rosaceous collar of leaf underneath it. This plant is very attractive. The flowers are really a fantastic Oxford blue colour. Eryngium bourgati is a native of Spain,, the Pyrenees and Med coast . It likes chalky sandy soil well drained soil so I hope it will like my Chiltern chalk. The best position for this plant is full sun. It is a perennial frost hardy needs little water so should be simple to look after. I bought my plant for £5...

An Octopuses Garden By The Sea

Advantages: underwater tunnel
Disadvantages: vastly overpriced

...Deep Sea World in North Queensferry under the iconic Forth Railway Bridge bills itself as Scotland's national aquarium and a fun filled venue for a family day out. The aquarium is easy to reach by car with ample free parking, a nearby railway station and bus service from Dunfermline. The first thing you will have to do when you arrive, depending on the time of year, is queue up for tickets. There are markers at various points along the queue telling you how long until you will reach the door, expect to wait up to an hour at peak times. You queue along the quarry which is supposed to hold seals but was empty the last time I visited. Spending ages in a queue is not the best way to start a visit anywhere and this is one of the many reasons that we do not visit anymore. Once you get inside the first area you come to is a main hall...

Sea Kelp

Advantages: Boosts energy, good value for money, natural
Disadvantages: Horrible taste if you let it dissolve in your mouth.

...I first heard about Sea Kelp after enquiring what the many supplements my friend was taking daily were. I had heard of all of them before, except kelp and wanted to know more about it. Basically, it is sea weed and it's supposed to be very good for you. It gives you more energy which boosts your metabolism and aids cell growth, so you nails and hair should grow faster among other things. It is also a natural source of iodine, although this is not a recommended daily requirement. I have found Kelp in all health stores stores I've visited and also a few chemists too. I was surprised to find that Boots didn't stock it, but did find it in other high street chemists. Holland and Barrett sell it at £2.49 for 250 tablets and this price is comparable in other stores, although does vary depending on quality and quantity etc... You are...

Clacton-on-Sea

Advantages: Great fun for all the family, lots of events and attractions
Disadvantages: Sea defences

...I spent ten years of my life living in Clacton-on-Sea. During that time Clacton changed a lot and I spent the time to go out and do some of the things in and around the local area. I suppose Clacton has an image of being a retirement home with nothing there for younger people. To an extent this is still correct, it is indeed an area where many people go for their retirement, however, it is rapidly becoming much more tourism focused and the attractions and sights are becoming much more relevant to younger people. During the 1960?s and 1970?s Clacton-on-Sea attracted lots of tourists but with the advent of holidays abroad, the number of tourists visiting Clacton rapidly fell during the 1970?s and 1980?s. This made Clacton the perfect spot for a peaceful retirement. In recent years, Clacton has undergone something of a rejuvenation in...

Seven Seas Worldwide - Great Company

Advantages: Efficiens and very polite, explained the whole process and deliver my goods correctly every time
Disadvantages: Seven Seas Worldwide have been victims of bad internet press

...I have used Seven Seas Worldwide a number of times and find them to be both efficient and very well organised. They arranged to collect my stuff on time and once delivered it a little later than I had hoped but the communication was there, they told me all about the delays and when to expect the delivery. Everything goes really well every time I use Seven Seas Worldwide. I was so surprised then when I recommended them to a friend to be told that there is negative press out there online about them. So I looked into it and guess what - its the same guys posting the same story on every site. you've either got 2 unhappy customers who have made it their life's mission to destroy the company ( I don't know many people like that) or this is a deliberate attempt by a competitor to bad mouth them...I know where I'd place my bets. I love site...

The Way You Were (The Kingdom by the Sea - Paul Theroux)

Advantages: well written, individual perspective, very of its own time
Disadvantages: biased & dated

...of human beings. He likes his towns and villages grand or at least graceful, but barring very rare instances, his sense of wonder is reserved for the world of nature - and those fleeting instances when a scene of beauty is caught like an intense illumination, when a momentary arrangement of the world seen form a particular angle is captured with perfect clarity, vivid and unforgettable. "The Kingdom by the Sea" is now, of course, a period piece, and Theroux's natural talent for misery and depressiveness is ideally suited to depicting the Kingdom of 1982, the time of the Falklands War, the gloomy hardships of Thatcherite depression with huge unemployment, empty hotels and closed factories, the destruction of industry, the Northern Irish 'troubles' in full bloom, the looming end of the railway network. Oh, and the son of the heir to the throne...
