It's a camera. It goes underwater
Review of Sea & Sea Motormarine II by ESpy

Advantages: Cheaper than throwaways - and it goes deeper
Disadvantages: Rangefinding! Needs a strobe

...with a small aperture to give myself the best chance of getting things in focus. Worked surprisingly well. The strobe (YS60) that I bought with the camera is, as far as I'm concerned, essential. Whilst our eyes adapt to the light levels underwater, film is less forgiving. The strobe puts a lot of the colour back so everything is as colourful as I remember it. Without it, things are somewhat drab - even whilst snorkelling, which came as a surprise to me. It isn't a housed SLR, nor is it a Nikonos 5, but it is a viable intro to underwater still photography for me - and capable of delivering some impressive shots if I do my bit.... Read review

Sea and Sea!
Review of Sea & Sea Seamaster Pro-EX by ElyshaF

Advantages: Amazing pictures
Disadvantages: Heavy when above water

...and had no idea what all the extra parts were for! The camera of course does not only have to be used under water but can be used on land. It has an internal flash so you don't have to have the strobe connected all the time. There is also a focus knob so you will have no trouble capturing the ideal picture whether it is a metre away or .... well I really have no idea how far it will go! I found the camera very easy to use even though I had a mask on. The viewfinder is quite large so you have no problems finding what you are looking for. The quality of the pictures were fabulous. I really wish I had them to show to you and you will wish you had been there as well. The colours were so bright on the fish and the clear blue sea waters made taking a picture much easier. I did catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two but I didn't have the camera... Read review

Capturing life beneath the water
Review of Sea & Sea DX-750G by Steven_Holroyd

Advantages: Value for money, easy to use and compact
Disadvantages: Says it can take 7.0 mp photos when in fact it only produces 5.1 effective mp

...and a choice between black and white, normal or sepia effects can be used. There is also a white balance function available with the same options you find in normal camera mode, however the custom function does not work the same way, it auto adjusts the colour settings according to the first frame that is captured. In my opinion this camera is not a video camera so don’t use it as one. If you are serious about video rather invest in a proper camcorder. I will admit though that the video function on the 750G is useful underwater if you cannot capture the moment with a still photo. o Underwater accessories o = The 750G was originally released in a kit form which consists of the following: camera, underwater housing, YS15 strobe, fiber optic cable (for triggering the flash underwater), single sea arm and stay (this is to mount... A sound and reasonable camera
Review of Sea & Sea MX-10 Camera by Royston1

Advantages: A great camera for someone to just jump in the water and have a go with
Disadvantages: You will outgrow the camera especially if you move beyong the novice level

.... The strobe which comes with the camera is good enough for the novice photographer and comes with manual or automatic settings. I have never had a lesson on underwater photography, but enough info comes with the camera so there you can jump in and have a go. Finally it is easy to load/unload film, you can use above the surface if you want, the settings are easy to adjust underwater and some of the photos I have had with the MX10 are so good I have had them framed and put on the wall.... Brilliant for amateur underwater photographers
Review of Canon WP DC800 Marine case Digital photo camera by TimDJ

Advantages: Easy to use, lets you take great photos with little effort
Disadvantages: You can't feel the half way focus point on the shutter button

...unless you bring it quite close. The only other minor annoyance is that the zoom function is reversed when the camera is inside the case because of the way the mechanism works, which takes some getting used to. The WP DC800 is waterproof tested to 40m, but I only took it down to around 20m on dives. I used it practically every day for the 3 months that I was there and I am so glad I bought it, as some of the pictures I came back with are amazing. The housing comes with spare O-ring grease, which I have only used once, and only because I thought it was probably a good idea, not because there were any problems with leaks. The housing also includes a removable flash diffuser, and a tripod stand socket which i assume can be used to attach weights or a strobe light My experience with the product is limited to 0-20m underwater, and only in warm... Happy snapper
Review of Sea & Sea MX-5 Camera by ESpy

Advantages: Very little to go wrong, takes std 35mm film
Disadvantages: Could be cheaper!

...The MX5 (the Sea & Sea MX5, that is, not the Mazda) is a basic waterproof camera of the happy snapper variety. Depth resistant to 36m, it has a natty flip-up sportfinder/lens cover, built in flash and uses 35mm film. This camera is not aimed at the serious underwater photography crowd - it really is just a housed inexpensive 35mm camera. However, it is a nice bit of kit if you don't ask too much of it! There is no focussing to worry about (fixed focus, not autofocus), there is very little to go wrong and it is capable of taking some pretty good shots in shallow water. The onboard flash really shouldn't be used underwater, as backscatter will show up rather a lot and bleach out your images. I looked at buying one, but decided after much playing about with it that given my delusions of taking the odd semi-professional looking shot... Read review

Point and Shoot
Review of Kodak Panoramic Disposable Camera by hamster177

Advantages: Quick and Easy
Disadvantages: Doesn't include processing

...I bought a twin pack of these for my 14 year old neices. Knowing that 14 year olds aren't particularly careful with their belongings, ut seemed like a good idea. The camera comes with 27 exposures and has a flash mode but takes a while to warm up. The cost was £9.99 for two. The camera is simple to use, adjust to the type of photo you want i.e. classic or panoramic, then point and shoot. The results are very good. Clear sharp images. We were all very impressed at our budding photographers. The pictures ranged from the dog next door to sea views. Both close up and far images were superb and photos taken at night were also very clear. A good all round dispoable camera.... Read review

Under the sea
Review of The Blue Planet (Wide Screen) by Clara

Advantages: Amazing underwater photography
Disadvantages: makes you wish you were David Attenborough

...: The Blue Planet, The Deep, Open Ocean, Frozen Seas, Seasonal Seas, Coral Seas, Tidal Seas, Coasts, Making Waves, Deep Trouble. This series apparently took 5 years to make, and watching the programmes you can imagine Sir Dave and the camera crew sitting around in boats waiting for hours for the right weather, or tides, or whale to appear. The camera work is amazing, you won't have seen anything like this on television before. The viewer is introduced to some beautiful and some truly horrible creatures, including some discovered down in the darkest depths which hadn't been seen before. The BBCs natural history unit has an excellent reputation and watching this series you can appreciate why. The dedication put into making these programmes shines through. The Blue Planet provides a fascinating introduction to the various regions and types... Read review

This could get you £250!!
Review of Samsung VP W60 by emilyo

Advantages: Lightweight, easy to use, affordable
Disadvantages: Doesn't like the cold, no LCD display

...basic. You can film in Wide Shot, Negative, Black and White, Sepia Ghost, Strobe, Mirror, Mosaic and Art. I have not really used these features as if I wanted a special effects camera I would have bought one. I have found it difficult to use the effects. Although a menu comes up on the screen so you know where you are, it doesn't tell you where you are meant to be if you are on the wrong button. For such a small camcorder I have found these features fiddly, unnecessary and purely for show. The camcorder comes with a Lithium-ion battery which is rechargeable through an Ac adapter. The battery lasts about an hour and a half which is ok considering you can only record for about that time anyway. I have never bought another battery as they are expensive at about £40 and I charge up in between uses so have not found it too much of a problem... Read review

The Dead Sea and me
Review of Dead Sea (Israel) by buzzard_cad

Advantages: An unusual experience, good for the skin
Disadvantages: A long walk, the salty water may sting after a while

...~Summary~ The Dead Sea, this was the main reason for my trip to Israel. The healing properties of the waters may be overstated, but you can't go to Israel and not experience mudpacks and swimming in the salty water. The resorts are well equipped with showers, lockers, toilets, restaurant and products to take back home. The actual Dead Sea waters are receding so it is a long walk to the water edge, but there is a land train if you have trouble walking far. The waters are a bit stingy on the skin so I would advise caution if you have sensitive skin. ~Introduction~ The Dead Sea is in Israel and is shared with Jordan. The Dead Sea is renowned for its revitalising properties and products from the Dead Sea area include mud masks, bath salts and other bathing items. The Dead Sea is also below sea level in a valley and has very high salt... Read review
