Seagate Momentus 160Gb 2.5inch hard drive
Advantages: Huge capacity, reasonably fast, 5 year warranty
Disadvantages: Not the fastest
...My laptop, a Dell 5150 is a fine machine (see review elsewhere on Ciao) but the 80Gb hard drive whilst big for a laptop is starting to get a bit cramped now I have both Windows XP and Vista on it so I've started looking around for a second hard drive so I can put Vista on one and leave XP on the other and then swap drives as needed. Luckily, following a previous hard drive failure, I have a spare caddy that the laptop needs so swapping drives would be a quick task, assuming I keep the tiny screwdriver needed handy in my rucksack!
Laptop hard drives are smaller than normal - 2.5inch as opposed to 3.5 inch and tend to be at a price premium compared to the 'normal' sized drives, especially the bigger ones. They also tend to be much slower as they run at 4200RPM instead of 5600 or even 7200RPM that desktop ones run at. The reason being...

Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100 GB Review
Advantages: Small, fast, large cache
Disadvantages: Expensive
...times. So overall it performs well. Seagate are a trusted manufacturer and have been around for a while. As far as I'm aware they have never made a bad device line, but then my HDD's of preference are normally Western digital.
The device uses an 8mb cache, this isn't a special as it used to be since many other 2.5"HDDs now use this amount but its still a plus point for the device. It runs a 7200RPM, this is about the same as many normal 3.5" HDDs but is quite fast for a laptop variant.
As I said before it is important to look at your need for this type of device, there are many other devices available that do the same job but for a far lower price. You should only buy 2.5" HDD's if you really need one and if you can't use anything else.
I bought this one new from Ebuyer for just over £100 inc VAT and delivery. Its now happily...

Seagate Momentus, Good allaround.
Advantages: Speedy, High Capacity, Quite, good customer support
Disadvantages: Requires a bit more power than other laptop drives.
...If you are looking for a good hard disk for your laptop you are looking at the right line of Hard disk from Seagate, the Seagate Momentus is one of the best laptop hard disks out there, I have been using one for some time now and have had it never go wrong, the only down side to the disk the power consumption of it is around 1 amp (5 watts) usually and for most low end disks it is usually around 0.5 amps (2.5 watts), but this is down to the speed of which the disk spins at, a staggering 7200 RPM, for a laptop hard disk this is fast, as most hard disk for laptops only work at ether 4200 RPM or 5400 RPM. Since this hard disk has such a fast spindle, it means that it can read and write like 'Billy Stink' (old expression!)
The price for this disk isn't too bad considering that you are getting a high speed, high capacity disk that is nearly...

Seagate 160 GB HDD, ATA 100
Advantages: Only sleekness. Nothin other than this in my opinion
Disadvantages: Everything. Performance, reliability, speed, sound etc.
....
Comparison
Im using Hitachi 160 GB now and it really rocks. Reliability is very good and very silent in its operation. Also Hitachi performance is better with its 8MB cache.
It took 1.57 minutes to copy a 6.8 GB Hi-Def movie file in Hitachi but this took 2.41 minutes.
Not recommended to buy this, its better to buy Seagate HDD of capacity 250 GB and above.
Advantage
In my opinion the only advantage that i can mention is the Manufacturer's support. He never let me down even for a single time when i went to him for servicing this HDD when it got repaired. :-)
This is truly my opinion and mean no harm to anyone.
P.S = Thanx for your ratings in advance.

Seagate ST9320325AS
Advantages: Small, quiet, reliable
Disadvantages: Can't think of any really
...I bought this particular harddrive recently to be used as backup for all my photos and music and other miscellaneous documents that I have managed to collect over the years.
Basically, mainly all external hard drives on the market today are just ordinary hard drives in an external caddy which provides power and allows you to connect it to your computer to read data. It's extremely easy to buy your own hard drive and caddy, connect them together yourself and away you go with your own customised external HDD.
A 2.5" hard drive is the size used for laptops so consequently it is smaller and more compact than a regular 3.5" drive for desktops. The Seagate ST9320325AS is a SATA-300 drive which basically means it's quite fast although the regular consumer doesn't really notice the difference all that much between that and older style...

Seagate Comes Out Top... Again!
Advantages: Fast, Quiet and Efficient
Disadvantages: None
...some quiet, relaxing music.
As for efficiency, the Seagate Momentus added another 25 minutes of battery life onto that of my IBM ThinkPad T21, from 3 hours 50, all the way to 4 hours and 5 minutes! The old 20GB Fujitsu disk must have really been guzzling some juice to use 25 minutes of power!
After having the drive for a few days I have decided not to get the 100GB disk as I have become so attached to the Momentus.
It truly is the most perfectly balanced laptop drive on the market today, so if you're in a buying decision, just don't think about it and BUY ONE! I promise you will never look back!...

Seagate do it again
Advantages: Reliable, Good Value for money, quiet, 5 year warrenty.
Disadvantages: Heat
...Ever since I bought a computer a few years ago from an online retailer I have never used any other hard drive than a seagate baracuda for a few reasons, one being that they run very quietly due to the Fluid Dynamic Bearing technology they use. Another is that they are extreemly reliable, I have used 2 in one of my own systems and one in a system I built for a friend (the drive being reviewed).
I was starting to worry about the reliability of these drives due to a problem my friend was having with his computer(the one I built), after doing all of the diagnostic tests(seatools) provided with the drive (if you buy retail) or downloadable (if you buy it OEM(original equipment manufacturer, basically you buy just the drive, no cables, no driver CDs/floppies, nothing)) and nothing was wrong with the drive, it turned out to be a windows...

ATA - I SAY NAY!
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: poor service all round
...the terminal building. Being 100 feet up @ one in the morning carrying two children on those steps is, in my opinion, more of a safety hazard than staying on the plane!
The ATA flight lasted 10 hours, including stoppage. The aeroplane that we flew on was a Lockheed Tri-Star ? Very old!!!! The screens were too small to see and the legroom was enough only for the smallest of people.
On top of this we were offered no ?usual? flight freebies like eye masks or earplugs. Not even on the night flight which made me mad because a guy sitting next to me chose to read all night with his light switched on that covered more of me than him!
Don?t fly ATA if you can help it!...

Use a Seagate for your harddrive
Advantages: cheap, easy to install, quiet
Disadvantages: no bundled software
...I bought the ST340810A ? Seagates ATA-100 40Gb IDE 5400rpm hard drive when I was wanting to upgrade from a 20Gb Maxtor harddrive, and wanted a cheap and affordable hard drive. I paid ATS 1645 (around £75) for the drive, after having found this to be the lowest price for the drive on the consumer site geizhals.at (I get a lot of my hardware and software from places found here) from Goldadler ? one of Austria?s cheapest computer retailers.
Obviously this isn?t going to be the fastest kid on the block, being only a 5400 rpm drive (there are of course a lot of drives at 7200RPM) although funnily enough, this drive had a better average seek time that the 7200RPM model Seagate were offering with the same capacity (8.9ms average compared with 9ms average).
It uses the Ultra ATA/100 interface, although there are patches available if your...

Another great Seagate Drive
Advantages: Price
Disadvantages: Noise
...Seagate have always made great hard drives and this is no excepetion it reads and writes fast.
This drive is one in a new range of seagate drives that use perpendicular recording technology, meaning more space per platter.
There is only one bad point to this drive and that is the noise you can here it read this may not be a problem for some but compared to the samsung hard drive I also have in my pc, the seagate makes the most noise (you cant hear the samsung).
Good points for this drive include the price its pritty cheap for the price and amount of storage you get, being a seagate you get a nice long 5 year guarantee.
Technical specs
- Capacity: 250 GB
- Speed: 7200 rpm
- Interface: SATA-II
- Cache: 16MB
- 5 year manufacturer''s warranty
To conclude this is an excellent hard drive as expected from such a great...
