Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as truculent as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, cooped up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12) ... less

Mistress Mary quite contrary....
Advantages: Well written, good characters, suitable for children and adults
Disadvantages: None, for me
...The Secret Garden is Frances Hodgson Burnett?s most well-known children?s book, despite the fact that it was actually not very well received during her life. It tells the story of Mary, a young girl brought up in India by rich, neglectful parents and a series of servants. When herm other and father die of cholera, she is sent to England to live in a large country house in Yorkshire belonging to...

The secret garden
Advantages: A very original and detailed story, which sounds very realistic
Disadvantages: Since it?s supposed to be a children?s story I think it might be somewhat long and difficult to understand
...The secret garden was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett (the version I have was, anyway).
It is wonderful tale about a young girl who was bought up in India. Her parents are killed very early on in the book and young Mary finds that she has to leave and go and live in a new country with her uncle (Archibald craven) who she has never met or seen. Mary moves from roasting hot India where...

"Where, you tend a rose, my lad, A thistle cannot grow."
Advantages: Heartwarming and endearing, a classic that needs to be read - whatever your age!!
Disadvantages: Some of the dialect writing could be difficult for younger children
...Last week I bought a copy of the wonderful 'Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett for my granddaughters 9th birthday.
I have bought all four of my daughters this book and this is the second granddaughter for whom I have bought it ( 6 more to go!!)
I still have a VERY well thumbed copy of this book that my godmother ( the angel who introduced me to the wonders of the written word) bought...
