Serpico Tony Manero (John Travolta) in Saturday Night Fever and Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) in Boogie Nights have one major thing in common: They both have posters of Al Pacino as Serpico on their bedroom walls. As the real-life NYPD detective whose integrity cost him virtually everything (and almost cost him his life), Pacino became one of the icons of gritty, realistic 1970s filmmaking. Released in 1973, between the first two Godfather movies, this is the true story of Frank Serpico, a long-haired, idealistic, iconoclastic cop who reluctantly goes undercover to investigate dirty colleagues who are on the take. This is one of the definitive Pacino performances, along with his role as Michael Corleone in the Godfather saga, and Sonny the bungling bank robber in Dog Day Afternoon (which reunited him with his Serpico director, Sidney Lumet)--and Pacino was nominated for a best actor Oscar for all of them (although he wouldn't actually win until 1992's Scent of a Woman). --Jim EmersonThe Untouchables As noted critic Pauline Kael wrote, the 1987 box-office hit The Untouchables is "like an attempt to visualise the public's collective dream of Chicago gangsters." In other words, this lavish reworking of the vintage TV series is a rousing potboiler from a bygone era, so beautifully designed and photographed--and so craftily directed by Brian De Palma--that the historical reality of Prohibition-era Chicago could only pale in comparison. From a script by David Mamet, the movie pits four underdog heroes (the maverick lawmen known as the Untouchables) against a singular villain in Al Capone, played by Robert De Niro as a dapper caesar holding court (and a baseball bat) against any and all challengers. Kevin Costner is the naive federal agent Eliot Ness, whose lack of experience is tempered by the streetwise alliance of a seasoned Chicago cop (Sean Connery, in an Oscar-winning performance), a rookie marksman (Andy Garcia), and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) who holds the key to Capone's potential downfall. The movie approaches greatness on the strength of its set pieces, such as the siege near the Canadian border, the venal ambush at Connery's apartment, and the train-station shootout partially modeled after the "Odessa steps" sequences of the Russian classic Battleship Potemkin. It's thrilling stuff, fueled by Ennio Morricone's dynamic score, but it's also manipulative and obvious. If you're inclined to be critical, the movie gives you reason to complain. If you'd rather sit back and enjoy a first-rate production with an all-star cast, The Untouchables may very well strike you as a classic. --Jeff ShannonChinatown Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamourous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted colour cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholson's nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time. --Anne Hurley ... less

Serpico DVD Review
Advantages: Peformances, Intelligence, Thought-Provokative
Disadvantages: A little slow in places.
...Al Pacino stars as Frank Serpico, a NYPD officer who is most famous for stepping forward to report and testify against police corruption in the 1970s. A true story, based on Peter Maas' autobiography of the character, Serpico portrays the honest cop who is harassed and distrusted by his fellow officers, simply for doing the right thing.
The film opens with Serpico in hospital, reflecting on past events. We see his rise from rookie to the more experienced officer, becoming familiar with the dodgy dealings of the cops around him. Frank soon learns that if you don't accept bribes from a variety of different sources then you really aren't part of the team at all. Refusing to conform, Serpico soon becomes isolated in the force for his honest and ?hippy? lifestyle; after the police commissioner fails to take his allegations seriously, he then...

Chicks, kicks, cars and stars
Advantages: Very funny, great action, Drew Drew Drew
Disadvantages: A bit slapdash on the story
...onaire computer company chairman is kidnapped and his software stolen. The Angels are recruited to track him down and retrieve the software. This leads to countless fight scenes (a nice little feature is the fact that not one of the Angels ever uses a gun), countless sexy scenes (well what can you expect with that cast?), and one or two car chases.
The thing with this movie is that it does not take itself too seriously. You know this from the first scene when they make some quips about remaking old TV series as movies. The movie is written cleverly enough to not make you think you are watching American Pie or Road Trip but also that this is not Heat or Serpico. No mean feat when you have gone through thirty scriptwriters.
The special effects are fantastic. The fight scenes use the same slow motion animation as The Matrix. They are...

Pure Hitchcock
Advantages: Interesting aspects and visional tricks
Disadvantages: Not really very much to it
...for a few minutes, Christopher Walken, Mandy Patinkin, Same Levine and Charles Napier to name just a few. But despite these appearances it's a very much two handed movie between the two leads, the other actors presence being basically irrelevant, regardless of how quirky they may appear. Margolin in particular gives a good performance, one of her last in fact after a reasonable career including leading roles in Serpico, and Annie Hall she took a 10 year break from acting until Ghostbusters 2, shortly after she died of cancer.
Last Embrace looks and feels like a Hitchcock movie, and this could be its flaw, you see you either love Hitchcock or hate him; and to be honest with you I was never that enamoured with the director although I did enjoy Psycho and Frenzy. Some argue that Last Embrace is an attempt to replicate Hitchcock, with Demme...
