Keighley Worth Valley Railway worth the visit!

Advantages: Wonderful periodic stations and rolling stock
Disadvantages: Is fairly short if you don't use the rover ticket option.

...Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is well worth the visit! In the heart of Bronte country is a small but lovely steam railway line, known as the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Despite its size and the area it runs through it is best known as the part of the filming location for the film The Railway Children. Although it operates mostly steam trains, it does also on occasion run diesel trains often used by the locals going into Keighley! As such there is a good concession rate if you do live within a certain postcode area, so it is worth checking up on. However, we visited as tourists, using Oxenhope as our destination station (you can have a round trip using any one of the main stations). Once we arrived we had some time to spare so went to have a look at some carriages and other rolling stock in a barn set off from the main...

A Railway with a difference

Advantages: A true story of one man's courage
Disadvantages: Very distressing at times

...As many of you will already know, I am an avid reader of anything and everything. I've always had a love of books and will read any book placed in front of me. Some subjects will just captivate my interest and, when my dad lent this book to me, I did not think that a book about railways would be interesting. How wrong I was! The RRP on this is £7.99, although if you shop around, it can be found online for a lot less (try Amazon marketplace for a price of about £3). I always shop around for my books, as I am a bit of a tightwad haha! But seriously I will happily pay for a second hand copy of a book, as sometimes it is just too expensive to buy it new. Anyway, I digress and should really get back to the review of this book. Eric Lomax (the author) lived for most of his life in Edinburgh prior to the outbreak of WW2. While...

Railway Children

Advantages: A step back in time!
Disadvantages: It is a little short...but it doesnt have to be!

...and sociability that is hard to find these days. You will find yourself chatting to the guard or any of the ticket inspectors up and down on the train. Even when you go in to the refreshement rooms eg at Oxenhope or on the platform at Keighley you receive intimate and friendly service. I am not going to go into detail regarding the journeys up and down the line [albeit a short 5 mile trip] as I believe another author has covered that well. Suffice to say the scenery is lovely and one can relate to the railway children film scenery and also to recognise some of the scenes that you may have seen in Sherlock Holmes adventures [Keighley railway station ] amongst others. The staff do go out of their way to make it special and if you have children I recommend the Christmas Specials that KWVR run annually although even if you do not have children the run...

"All Aboard!"

Advantages: A great day out for all the family
Disadvantages: Parking charge at Haworth station

...It was my mam?s 50th birthday at the end of last month so my parents and I decided to go away for a long weekend, with my sister and her children. My eldest nephew loves trains and has done since a very young age and as my other nephew and my niece like trains too we thought visiting Keighley & Worth Valley Railway would be something that would keep the children entertained. If the children are happy my mam is happy. We were staying in Shipley, West Yorkshire and we travelled to the railway by car. "What is it?" Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is Britain?s last remaining complete heritage branch line which runs from Keighley to Oxenhope, West Yorkshire. All the stations along the line are old style and some of them have been used in films and TV. All the staff that work on the railway are trained volunteers. "~Our...

The seven deadly sins

Advantages: Fabulous ending
Disadvantages: Some of it is quite dull

...Detective Lieutenant William Somerset is just six days off retiring when he becomes involved in the hunt for a serial killer. Aided by Detective David Mills, it soon becomes clear that the murders, although initially random, do have something in common - each of them is the representation of one of the seven deadly sins. Gluttony, for example, is represented by a man so overweight that he was unable to escape from his tormentor. Slowly, the two detectives begin to piece the evidence together, and Mills almost catches the serial killer, nick-named John Doe, at one point, only to narrowly escape with his life. Will they finally catch up with John Doe? Or is he destined to always be one step ahead? Made in 1995 and directed by David Fincher, this film was much praised on release for being excellent in just about every way possible...

Queen of the Valley

Advantages: Interesting, very interesting!
Disadvantages: The most famous tomb is now closed.

...Day 1 in Egypt, site number 2 (and it is only 09:30), so let's do away with the babble and launch right in.... ~What's this place all about then?~ The Valley of the Queens is the burial site for the Queens & children of the Pharaohs of the 18th, 19th & 20th dynasties (1550 - 1070BC). It is said that there are about 70 (some claim as many as 85) different burial sites in the area. Probably the most famous tomb here is that of Queen Nefertari*, which is the largest and most spectacular in the valley. Unfortunately, this tomb is now no longer open, we were told by our guide that a couple of years ago there was some rain in the valley, which caused some damage to Nefertari's tomb. The Egyptian Government went about restoring the damage, and spent roughly a cool million on it. To recuperate the funds they opened the tomb, but...

Diamond review  Valley of the Kings

Advantages: Chateaux and gardens, old towns and local cuisine
Disadvantages: Unexciting landscapes, well-trodden tourist trail

...Where is the best place in France to get away from it all, to slip off for a few days (or a few weeks, or months), perhaps to your second (or third, or fourth) home? With a country so rich in attractive regions, this could be regarded as a tough question, but the kings of the Valois dynasty in the late 15th and early 16th Centuries were in no doubt about their answer. They picked on the lower valley of the Loire, and in particular the stretch between Orleans and Tours, to site their out-of-town chateaux and hunting-lodges. Where they led the court naturally followed, and soon any ambitious aristocrat felt the need to have a prestigious pied-a-terre nearby from which to keep in touch with current intrigue and to curry favour with the king. The reasons that attracted the Valois kings and their retinues to the Loire Valley...

The Seven Deadly Sins..........Fincher style!

Advantages: Powerful, acting, direction, cinematography
Disadvantages: Will be too brutal for some

...Every now and then, along comes a gem of a film that keeps you absolutely riveted to the screen, no matter how many times you watch it. Even writing it now, it is so vivid in my mind. A dark and disturbing psychological thriller, it features two cops as they hunt after a serial killer, who is using the seven deadly sins as a pattern for the killings. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play the two detectives, and what starts out as a pair of hard nosed cops chasing another deranged psycho killer, soon turns into a psychological game of cat and mouse. Pitt is excellent as the frenetic and volatile young Mills, a doggedly determined detective who lets nothing stand in his way. He is contrasted by the ever serene Morgan Freeman as Somerset, an older and more experienced detective who would rather play out a scene in his head and plan his...

CHILTERN RAILWAYS

Advantages: On time, new trains, comfortable
Disadvantages: Pricy to only go a few stops, trains are infrequent on Sundays

...Introduction ~~ Well the British railways are in a bit of a state. Unsafe, late and unreliable are three words that come to mind. Well those three words don't go with all of Britain's railways. Well those three words certainly don't go with Chiltern Railways, who I use a lot. They provide services between Birmingham, the West Midlands and London. Frequency of trains ~~ Out of the many times I have used Chiltern Railways the train has never been more than 5 minutes late. And usually it is dead on time. Yes I bet your thinking if only all British rail services were like Chiltern Railways. Trains are very frequent in the week and on Saturdays but trains are very infrequent on Sundays and the service is restricted. The service is also interrupted on Sundays due to track maintenance. Value ~~ Not great. Comfort ~~ All...

The Derwent Valley, Derbyshire

Advantages: A Great Day Out
Disadvantages: Lots Of Enviromental Damage Was Caused During Its Creation

...and the peace and quiet, but be warned during the Summer weekends the Valley can get very popular so if it is peace and quiet that you are after you may have to wander off the beaten track. THE HISTORY OF THE VALLEY The upper two Dams in the Derwent Valley were constructed at the early part of the twentieth century. Building began in 1901, this engineering was so vast that a purpose built Village called Birchinlee was constructed in the Upper Valley to provide Houses for all of those employed on the project. This Village even had its own Railway Station on a spur from nearby Bamford. Today, a hundred years later, traces of both the Railway Track and the Village of Birchinlee itself can still be seen. These two Dams were completed in 1916 and opened by King George V. The principal objective of these new Dams was to provide drinking water...
