The taste of Seville or the taste of *****?

Advantages: Orange taste is nice.
Disadvantages: Combination of flavours doesn't work. Poor quality chocolate and lack of smell.

...Wandering round my local discount shop as I tend do in the day before paydays bout of poverty I come across the Kit Kat Seville Edition. I have never been a big fan of Nestle chocolate and tend to find it all a little bit sickly sweet but the Kit Kat Seville edition promised, "An explosion of flavour in every bite". A heady claim methinks but a picture of oranges and the inside of a chocolate covered wafer oozing with caramelised orange swayed me (that and the fact it was twenty pence rather than thirty-five). Wrapped it looks like an orange Kit Kat Chunky and is around the same size. As I peel open the wrapper I reveal a slab of chocolate that looks precisely like a Kit Kat Chunky, thick and brick like but generously sized. I am disappointed at a complete lack of smell. Considering the claims of flavour explosions I was...

YOU WON'T GET TANGOED IN SEVILLE

Advantages: Totally YUMMY!!!!
Disadvantages: Too expensive for everyday!!

...A couple of months ago, I had to go into hospital for some tests, just my usual 3 yearly investigation to make sure all is OK (I have Ulcerative Colitis). I am required to starve for 2 days and take a Picolax, a strong laxative on the second day, so I’m obviously not at my best at this time! Before the 2 days begin, I always pop off to Sainsbury’s to stock up on interesting drinks, I can have clear drinks, clear in this sense means drinks without bit in rather than see-through. I came upon in the drinks department a Seville Orange Jiggler. My partner and I had just returned a few weeks earlier from Seville (where interestingly there are loads of lime trees on the streets and very few orange trees, but that is another story!) So I purchased this in a sort of ‘I’m feeling sorry for myself so I’ll...

A SEVILLE-Y NASTY CHOCOLATE BAR

Advantages: None at all
Disadvantages: Taste, look, smell, price

...You know, I have sat quietly by and watched as bastion after bastion of my life has been tampered with or bastardised. And no more so than in the food sector has this been apparent where I have had to accept the fact that Marathons are now to be called Snickers and Opal Fruits are to be forever known as Starbursts. I grinned and bared it as Maltesers were produced in a vile white chocolate version and KitKats took on a steroid type look by going chunky, but now I?m going to stand up and shout ?thus far and no further, stop tampering with perfectly good confectionary products!? Why have I finally decided to break my silence you ask? Well it?s simple really, I have before me one of the most disagreeable and loathsome spawns of a household name in chocolate, it is called KitKat editions Seville orange and is without doubt the most vile...

CARMONA (not a back-seat driver)

Advantages: More history than you can shake a centurion's spear at
Disadvantages: May be too quiet for some

...Carmona sits on an elevated piece of land commanding sweeping views of the Corbones valley, around 30km from Seville. This is a very fertile region so it's no surprise that this strategic site, one of the few high points in the area, has been settled by humans for a long time. How long? I'm not going down the road of historical time-lines, but let's just say that there is evidence of human settlement from the neolithic period. It was during the Roman occupation that the town flourished, and apparently, the old town still follows the original Roman urban plan. The defensive gates, Seville and Cordoba, are Roman, but the most important Roman site in the town has to be the Necropolis (more on that later). The town's prosperity continued under almost 500 years of Moorish occupation, and indeed, was a major player during the reconquest...

From Seville ?

Advantages: Seville oranges can be used in a variety of recipes
Disadvantages: short season

...Seville oranges are no longer only grown in Spain although their name derives from the city and port from where they have been exported to the UK since the Middle Ages. Seville oranges (Citrus aurantium) are sour, bitter and full of pips, so are not good for eating. Even so they were a symbol of wealth, so much so that the Medici family has five of them in its' coat of arms. The name 'orange' is comes from the Sanskrit "naranga" which means 'orange tree'. The Crusaders brought this bitter orange, along with the lemon and lime, with them to Europe on their return from Palestine. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. Lack of this vitamin is indicated by scurvy, a reversible disease ~ symptoms of which include bleeding gums, dry skin and hair as well as spontaneous bleeding and wounds failing to heal. *~* The fruit...

Almaviva and the barber of Seville

Advantages: Fun and lively comic opera sung in English
Disadvantages: Not in the original language

...The Barber of Seville, Il barbiere di Siviglia is a comic opera full of vitality and fun. Composed by Gioachino Rossini in 1816, it is his most popular opera. Originally entitled Almaviva after the character from the play. The CD released by the label, Chandos as part of its Opera in English Series, on 21st February 2000 presents the opera in full recorded on 2 discs. The CD is available from most good music stores for the price of £17.99. The Opera in English series was launched in 1995 in collaboration with the Peter Moores? Foundation?s believe that "to enjoy opera to the full, there must be no language barrier?. Rossini wrote the opera as a commission for the manager of the Argentina Theatre, Rome where it was first preformed in the February of 1816. The libretto was written by Cesare Sterbini based upon Beaumarchais' play...

Gorgeous gooey and sweet : Ooer for Duerrs fine orange marmalade

Advantages: Tasty, refreshing, attractive product
Disadvantages: Contains sugar!!

...products. Duerrs Seville Orange Marmalade *Packaging this marmalade comes in a clear glass 454g jar with green metal lid. The label is distinctive in that several type fonts are used in various colours without the overall effect being too busy. Mary Duerr's signature lends history and gravitas to the label and "est 1881" leads you to trusting a tried and tested product. *Seville oranges Seville oranges are known for being particularly tart and are grown throughout the Mediterranean region. They are thick skinned and prized for making marmalade, being higher in pectin than the sweet orange and giving a better set and a higher yield. *Taste Having established that seville oranges are the best for marmalade, we come to the taste test. As with all sugary products, marmalades are highly personal in their characteristics. I personally am...

Giralda Tower in Seville

Advantages: Great views from the top
Disadvantages: Long walk up!

...Seville is the capital of Andalucia in southern Spain. It has many places of interest to see but a big attraction is the Cathedral with the Giralda attached to it. The Giralda was originally the minaret (where the call to prayer is made) of the mosque where the Cathedral now stands. It was constructed by the Muslims between 1184 and 1197. It has simple yet beautiful designs on all four sides making it an amazing site. After the reconquest in 1568 the Christians fitted the minaret with the bell tower which some say spoil the harmony of the Giralda. The Giralda is the only original part left of the mosque and is beautifully made and preserved. You can go up the Giralda for some amazing views of the Cathedral and also Seville. To go up the Giralda you will need to enter through the Cathedral. Entrance to the Cathedral on a Sunday...

Have a fietsa in Seville!

Advantages: great bars and tourist attractions
Disadvantages: too hot in summer

...Seville is set in the heart of Andaluicia, in the south of Spain. At first glance, it is filled with the usual touristy shops and attractions, but there is a lot more to it. The residents are are really laid-back. Like clockwork, the city shuts down every afternoon, for a long siesta. People gather in the Plazas for a bit of drinking and partying before catching a couple of hours sleep before the evening hits in. Shops stay open until 9pm-10pm. As everything has is relatively cheap, compared to the UK, you can really induldge in retail therapy. Nightlife: Seville is filled with fantastic bars, where you can grab some tapas, soak up some live spanish music, and meet the locals. Nightclubs are a little on the chessy side - expect to see a lot of salsa.... To see Seville at its best, its worth sticking just to bars. There are...

Disadvantages: Yet to acheive major goals

At this years World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Eunice Barber led after the first two events. At this year’s World Champs in Edmonton, on August 5th 2001, just as in the Sydney Olympics a year earlier, Eunice Barber went home early. With the main contender, Denise Lewis absent through a stomach upset and her nearest rivals vying “only” for silver or bronze medals, we had all but pinned the gold medal around Eunice Barber’s neck. Last time injury forced Eunice out, this time it was pure bad luck/ poor judgement (I haven’t made...
