Sex Role Development [DVD]

The film examines the influence of sex roles and stereotypes on a wide range of aspects. An amusing vox pop of sex stereotypes held by children leads to a sequence exploring the stereotype in the glossy advertisements which extol the male/female virtues. In an animated sequence the film shows how the growing child is channelled from birth: blue for boys, rough games and no tears; pink for girls, dolls and free expression of emotions. Then the film turns to explore the attempts by a family and a school to move away from these fixed views of roles to a more flexible attitude which encourages girls to do woodwork and boys to bake cakes. This film is of historical interest and reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless. ... less

Going the Distance sparkles with wit and true romance--something of a rarity among mass-market romantic comedies. Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, who have been a couple in real life, use their personal chemistry to effective ends in the film. They play Erin and Garrett, geography-crossed lovers who, after a whirlwind romance of six weeks in New York ("Keep it light! Keep it light" they both say, futilely), try to see if they can keep the love fires burning when Erin must move to the West Coast. There are predictable pitfalls and speed bumps that populate any romantic comedy, as well as a sublime supporting cast of friends and siblings. Especially notable is Christina Applegate as Erin's sister, Corinne, jaded and hilarious, and fiercely protective of her sister. But the charm of Going the Distance is in the winsomeness of its main stars. Barrymore and Long seem to be acting effortlessly, and their enjoyment of each other's company lets the audience feel a part of the romance. First-time screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe is less focused on zingers that are hard to believe as dialogue, and more on the subtle ways people get to know each other, and enjoy each other--especially with humor. Director Nanette Burstein (documentaries including American Teen and The Kid Stays in the Picture) keeps the action moving deftly and lets the two stars shine--even as they long for one another across the miles. Erin and Garrett's stab at phone sex is laugh-out-loud funny, yet their tender, tentative connection feels real and warm. Going the Distance lets its likable stars cross the finish line, and bring the audience along with them. --A.T. Hurley ... less

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus: Get seriously involved with the classic guide to surviving the opposite sex - John Gray

A classic and unique self-help book, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus tackles the perennial problems faced by couples everywhere. Gray tells an allegorical story of the Venusians and the Martians who move to Earth, having enjoyed wonderful and fulfilling relationships with one another for many years. However, as soon as they arrive on this planet, amnesia sets in! They can no longer remember that they are from different planets and all sorts of communication and emotional problems set in. Written in an unpretentious and jargon- free style, Gray's tactic of using "Venusian" and "Martian" to refer to the two genders (and he does comment that these roles are not necessarily based on sexual biology) avoids the dead-end path followed by so many people, of using sweeping statements such as: "men always..." or "women just don't understand...". Instead, he says: "Venusians are from a different planet, therefore..." or "Martians need...". This in itself is a worthwhile tactic, removing blame and shifting communication onto a new level where it is OK not to be on the same wavelength all the time and not to automatically understand all your partner's needs. His new naming strategy even manages to be amusing, in a way that many books in this area can fail to be, although the writing tends towards over-simplicity at times. He discusses every aspect of relationships--but most importantly he does this in practical ways. For example, he lists common statements that people in relationships say to their partners, what is intended, what is actually heard. Gray goes on to suggest ways to say what you intended that are more appropriate for the Venusian or Martian audienc--he even compiles lists of translations of common male/female exchanges. The tone of the book is always helpful, friendly and non-judgmental, kind and well-meaning, although the typical self-help strategy of repeating and summarising points results in the book seeming somewhat directionless. It is nevertheless an essential title for the bookshelf of every self-respecting self-help addict, and is a good place to start for the curious. It does also have some real gems of wisdom and new strategies. All in all, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is a star guide to understanding the constellations of coupledom. --Alison Jardine ... less

When Emmanuelle was released in 1974 it caused uproar in France. President Pompidou tried to ban it, effectively catapulting it into the year's "must see" category of films and into history as the point at which soft-core pornography dallied with the mainstream and conceived a new kind of arty erotic cinema with equal appeal to both sexes. As a result it acquired the patina of a classic of its kind and spawned a whole series of sequels. Based on Emmanuelle Arsan's erotic novel and dubbed "the longest caress in French cinema", it tells the slight tale of a young expatriate woman in Thailand, encouraged by her husband--and practically everyone she meets--to explore her sexuality through free love and the pursuit of fantasy. It also launched the career of Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel in the iconic title role. Never mind that the original character was Eurasian. Kristel's European good looks and lissom figure earned her a unique kind of big screen immortality. It's dreamily filmed by director Just Jaeckin and director of photography Richard Suzuki, with lots of simulated, soft-focus sex, much of it between Emmanuelle and her female conquests. Only an unpleasant rape scene in which she is the prize in a Thai boxing match, acknowledges that sexual fantasy has its dark side. The picture survives as a period piece from a more innocent time: the men, with their dated moustaches and tight pants, lack only medallions, and there's some deathless dialogue: "You like it [masturbation], don't you?" "Well yes, but I haven't had breakfast..." Even so, parts of Emmanuelle, made in the pre-AIDS era, have an almost quaint charm. True, the languorous escapades of the jetsetters are juxtaposed with rough images of the Thai sex trade, revealing among other things exciting new ways to smoke a cigarette. But Kristel's insouciance is often hypnotic. On the DVD: Presented in 16:9 widescreen format, this release effectively replicates the original cinema viewing experience, down to the dreadful dubbed dialogue. Whichever language you watch it in, the actors' lips move in a world of their own and the Dolby Digital soundtrack only emphasises the muffled quality. Only Pierre Bachelet's "plinky-plonky" theme comes across with any clarity. Extras are limited to the original theatrical trailer.--Piers Ford ... less

24 Hour Party People: Music From The Motion Picture;Featuring The New Single By NE - Original Soundtrack

The rise and demise of idealist (and stoically ideological) Manchester independent label Factory Records and scene-setting "Madchester" nightclub the Hacienda is the subject of Michael Winterbottom's pop mockumentary 24 Hour Party People, the soundtrack of which naturally zooms in on the two bands whose sonic endeavours built the fragile empire brick-by-brick and beat-by-beat. Naturally, those bands are Joy Division--whose sombre granite majesty is represented by the three singles and the 12-inch version of "She's Lost Control"--and their liberated offspring New Order who, aside from the inevitable and financially Pyrrhric "Blue Monday", offer two previously unavailable tracks, a taut live version of "New Dawn Fades" with Moby (recorded in Los Angeles in August 2001) and their overdue collaboration with the Chemical Brothers on "Hear to Stay", a happy Technique-styled flashback of Ibizan beach-weather pop. Plenty, too, from those incorrigible substance-ingesting wastrels the Happy Mondays, the shambling soundtrack to that brief "baggy" age of acid, Es and aggro, Factory's last sunset before sweating over the sums and the Hacienda attracting unsavoury persons with machine guns. Pitted throughout are influential cultural reference points, the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK" (their Free Trade Hall gig in 1976, attended by many people who feature on this record, lit the punk fuse in England's northern provinces) and Chicago house innovator Marshall Jefferson's " Move Your Body", veritable stations of the cross on Factory Records road to Calvary. A tale of the head ruled by the heart, it was Factory's love for what they did that tore them apart. But the memories party on. --Kevin Maidment ... less

Mind your Mind [DVD]
We feel we are free to make our own choices but we are not as free as we think. Neurologists and psychologists have discovered how vulnerable...... more
We feel we are free to make our own choices but we are not as free as we think. Neurologists and psychologists have discovered how vulnerable our minds are to manipulation and suggestion, and how easily our own psyche can be taken out of our control. This documentary is a primer for psychological independence, teaching us to process more than our minds are comfortable with. From the glamorous, sex-obsessed world of advertising to the vacuous speeches of leading politicians, our responses are being silently but surely manipulated. Images of nude women appear hidden in Coca Cola adverts. Television channels flash up messages from their sponsors too fast for our conscious mind to catch. Lawyers twist the ambiguities of language to distract us and force us into a more suggestible mental state. Our minds are constantly missing the obvious: "we don't perceive what's there, we change what we perceive, and we perceive what's not there." Though subliminal messaging is illegal in most countries, it is still used more often than we may ever know. Neuro-linguistic programming can help us to protect ourselves against the manipulative forces that control consumers, pulling these forces apart so that we can see how they work. If we can open our eyes to the techniques used to control us, we can move these processes from our unconscious to our conscious mind. This film provides us with the psychological tools to fight them. What do we mean by 'attention', or the lack of it? Are we quite as attentive as we think? Do we miss things that are right under our nose, blinded by suggestion, assumption and 'common sense'? If so, how might this be used against us? Are the opportunities here to manipulate beliefs, alter behaviours? If so, who is doing the manipulating? Learn more about the Human Biocomputer, about Advertising, Ambiguities and Politics in this fast paced yet light-hearted film. ... less

Extras are limited to the original theatrical trailer.--Piers Ford ... less

How The Move got moving
Advantages: Classic late 60s debut album by a classic band, with additional tracks and ace packaging
Disadvantages: Apart from one sub-standard track, none whatsoever
...The Move
In their early days, The Move were like a Birmingham version of The Who, or The Kinks. Formed around late 1965 and featuring Carl Wayne (vocals), Roy Wood (lead guitar), Trevor Burton (rhythm guitar), Ace Kefford (bass), and Bev Bevan (drums), the five-piece group started off playing mostly cover versions of old rock'n'roll, soul and West Coast American pop, before they all...

A Museum of Sex!
Advantages: Interesting and funny.
Disadvantages: Not to everyones 'taste'. Some displays seemed disorganised.
...entrance fee of 4 Euros before entering the museum via a turnstile. We were immediately greeted by a mass of nakedness and more genitals than we had ever seen in our lives! The first few exhibits were displayed in large glass display cabinets and contained many items, mainly ornaments of naked men and women and a few of actual sex scenes.
As we moved along the corridor we realised that there was no real...

Travelling Without Moving
Advantages: lots of great tracks
Disadvantages: Didjital Vibrations
...Travelling Without Moving was released in 1996 by the Jazz Funk band Jamiroquai, this was their 3rd studio album and contains most of my favourite Jamiroquai songs. I was quite young when this album was released and stumbled across it a few years ago on Spotify and instantly fell in love with it, I bought my copy of Travelling Without Moving last year to keep in my car a bi...
