SG - Special Guitar, Stunningly Good!

Advantages: Plays well, feels great, sounds fantastic!
Disadvantages: Not cheap, could do with hard case supplying with it.

...Yes, yes I know, yet another geetar review. But a man has to have a hobby and sheep farmers keep a watchful eye on their livestock these days. Anyone want to buy a pair of second hand wellies? Seriously, I've been after a USA built Gibson for some time now and decided to go for the SG Special in faded worn brown. This is the entry level for the legendary model (£645 in this case, though still expensive). Buying guitars online can save a LOT of money but it something of a lottery as you can get a real lemon sometimes. But as we'll see, I hit lucky this time. Epiphone SG

Advantages: Beautiful guitar. Excellent sound. Very playable.
Disadvantages: None whatsoever!

...The Epiphone SG - the cheaper younger brother of the Gibson version, but it's certainly a worthy substitute. It's dark cherry colour, dark wooden neck and black scratch panel are excellent on the eye, and with it's symmetrical body it is one of the best looking guitars out there! The strings are raised higher in their saddle on the SG than say on a Fender, which is more ideal for lead guitarists out there, but being a rhythm man myself, there is no inconvenience whatsoever. I like to use Ernie Ball .9 Slinky strings on it, and they fit just about perfectly - you could probably squeeze some .11's in there easily enough if you really wanted to and if you played quite a lot of heavier music. Two pickups sit on the bridge, and three pickup selections are available - rhythm, middle and treble, depending on what takes your fancy...

SG Special - a Gibson thoroughbred

Advantages: Real Gibson Quality
Disadvantages: Heart Stopping price tag

.... Mine is lighter than my Strat. The SG is lighter still, so much so that it is neck heavy, which is why you will sometimes see players attach their straps to the head, in the style of an acoustic guitar so that the neck does not sag. The SG is comfortable to play both sitting and standing and has a tone that compares very favourably with the LP. If there is any criticism I can offer it would be that it does not pack as rich a blast as the Les Paul, probably because there is somewhat less of the body to provide resonance. When I bought my guitar it was a toss up between the SG and the LP but the deal I got on the LP swung the balance. Since then, I have been proved right, the list price of my guitar has gone up over £200 and now matches the SG Special. Given that my colleague also had to lay out over £75 for the hard case I think...

Gibson SG standard...

Advantages: Stunning looks. Amazing sound (Clean + Distorted). Amazingly Light.
Disadvantages: Newer Models can be weak at the neck.

Gibson SG - The Greatest Guitar in The World

...This is the second guitar i bought. I personally have only been playing guitar for 3 years so i do not understand all of the technical details of guitar and so this review is more applicable for first time buyers/players. The SG is well built (mine has taken a few knocks already) which makes it a good choice if you need to cart it around a lot. The neck gives you access to all the frets with ease. The frets themselves are relatively long which may be of benefit to learners but more experienced players may not necessarily like. The sound from the two pick ups is good and you can get a wide variety of sounds from them. Overall the effect i get is more of a muddy sound than a sharp noise which suits the music i play but might not for some. I find that the problem with this guitar is its wide neck. ...I bought this product in a music shop near my house for £1399.99 about 4 months ago(Jan/Feb) and have been playing it everyday for about 1-4hours. I'm using a Marshall MG15CD with it and it just sounds .... fabulous. The body of the guitar is made of mahogony wood and comes in either cherry red or ebony- I have the cherry red one. The neck is also made of mahogony wood and of rosewood. I already own a Fender Stratocaster and am happy to say that the Gibson SG is much lighter and has a much nicer sound. The neck has 22frets and the guitar has two humbuckers, a three way switch and two tone and two volume controls. The sound quality of most electric guitars depends on the amplifier you use-but not with this guitar. This guitar sounds great with any type of amplifier -be it a 500w or 5w ,small or big, expensive or cheap etc...

Alright for a beginner

Advantages: Pickups, Light weight
Disadvantages: Tuners, Intonation, Action

...I bought this guitar second hand from a friend, it was well looked after and was only a few months old. When i got it the intonation was out quite badly, that was an easy fix but the action was also terrible. I tried lowering the bridge but that didn't do a lot so in the end i had to take the neck off and put it back on at the correct angle. One this was done the action was pretty good and the guitar played nicely. The connection to the pickup selector was loose so it only ocassionally worked but once again that was easy to fix. The finish was very good apart from the bottom of the neck where the sanding was rough. One final thing is that the tuners don't stay in tune particularly well. Now that i've finished with the bad side i will get to the good bits. The pickups are high output which means they have a very defined sound and are...

Most likely you've visited your guitar shop and had to think about settling for a korean/mexican guitar that just isn't that special USA produced one you wanted. Well let me introduce the Gibson SG special. Already a legend in its own right - established in the 60s now is the perfect time to buy one! For some reason there is a price drop meaning you can pick one of these babies up for around £600 new, not bad given it comes with a gig bag, and is of course a Gibson! <Looks> This guitar has been around for years so the design is pretty much unchanged.
