A Big Day At The Sheffield Novotel!

Advantages: Excellent Food, Central Location.
Disadvantages: Poor Bar Service, Limited Parking.

...When one of my best friends got married yesterday (Sunday 19th December 2005) the location that she chose was the Novotel in Sheffield. This location was chosen for the entire day, which included the Civil Wedding at 2.30pm, the meal afterwards at 4pm and the evening reception which started at 7.30pm. The first thing that I will say before I begin this review is that I live less than a 5 minute walk away from this Hotel, which is conveniently situated right in the middle of the city centre, so I didn't actually stay here. This review is therefore based on my own opinions as seen from a non paying guest. My friend was staying at the Novotel (with her sister) on the Saturday night as well as her Wedding night the following day so I first went to this Hotel on Saturday night for a pre wedding drink. Sheffield's Golden Mile!

Advantages: Good variety of bars and shops, easily accesible, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Some shop prices are quite high

...As my son is studying at Sheffield University we have sampled a few of the hotels Sheffield has to offer and the Novotel is one we have used more than once. For anyone visiting Sheffield for the first time, the traffic system can be a little confusing so the situation of the Novotel makes it attractive to visitors. Once you've negotiated Park Square and actually managed to turn left into Arundel Gate you have to drive passed the hotel on the opposite side of the road, go round the roundabout and come back along Arundel Gate the opposite way to gain entrance to the hotel. Each time we've visited there have been roadworks on or near the roundabout and this can cause problems. ...Millhouses Park is a 32-acre Public Park that lies approximately 3 miles to the Southwest of Sheffield City Centre. Like many of the City's Parks and Public spaces the majority of this land was gifted to the City. The majority of the land that forms this particular Park was a gift from two prominent landowners in the early 1900's, the Earl Fitzwilliam & the Marquis of Zetland. This land was given over to the control of the City Council in 1909 with small areas of adjacent land being purchased by the Council a few years later. Advantages: Fast, Cheap and Comfortable
Disadvantages: Does Not Serve The Whole City, Often Congested

...Historically the City of Sheffield had an extensive Tram System that served the City from the late 1880's until 1960 when it was abolished. It had been perceived by the late 1950's that the future of travel in the City would be with Cars. Twenty five years later and there were so many Cars on the Roads that the City's transport infrastructure was on the verge of complete collapse. Clearly something radical had to be done and a Government funded study concluded that the future of travel in Sheffield would once again lie in the hands of the Trams. ...It's not often that I am overly impressed by the new bars that open in Sheffield. They come and go frequently and often change names overnight. The Common Room is however one such place that I did walk into and say "wow!" because its discreet entrance offers no hint of what is to be found inside. Located on Devonshire Street next to The Forum shopping complex this is a place that lies right in the heart of the city centre's student quarter. The Forum shopping complex has built up a reputation in recent years as a place to hang out and be seen and there are many small expensive boutique style shops whilst The Forum bar is a frequent haunt of the city's pop stars (past and present) and you even might spot a footballer or too as well.
