We RX8ed
Advantages: Style, performance, handling, price
Disadvantages: Fuel consumption
...I am excited. Even LegendaryMrsDude is excited. So in txt spk, you could say that "We RX-8ed". Get it?
But why are we excited? Well, its nearly that time - the time when the contract on my beloved Honda Civic Type-R runs out and I send it back to the garage. For the last 3 years it's carried me over 50,000 fun-filled miles and I really thought I would dread it when it's time came to an end. But I'm not - and I've got to thank Mazda for making it this way.
I've started looking for something worthy of replacing it. This could be a long process but the first in line is the Mazda RX-8, the latest 2+2 seater sports car from Mazda. It's only for a test drive, but in 4 days I've put it through as many scenarios as I can manage and the words you find here are based on my close scrutiny and extensive testing.
If first impressions count...

Mazda RX-8 - An experience
Advantages: Spacious, speedy, stylish
Disadvantages: Fuel consumption - ouch!
...I love cars! I love something with a little 'poke' and something that's got fun factor. Looks are quite important too.......and the Mazda RX-8 ticks all of these boxes.
I became the owner of a second-hand 2 year old 192bhp 4 door version a month ago and I like it. It sticks to the road like brown stuff to a blanket......you can do a good 80-90 mph round a sharp bend without losing control of your sphincter and feels very safe and controlled. Steering is quite stiff but very responsive and, again, gives you that feeling of control.
It looks good too.....very sleek in profile and a bit of a beast from the front view. The interior is 'ok' but could be better. There's a lot of plastic but it's not too crringeworthy. The 6 CD multi-changer is a nice bonus and the Bose sound system is crisp and clear and does not distort...

Mazda RX8: the driver's advocate
Advantages: Affordable, impeccable handling, styling, standard features, power, fun factor, driveability, usability (a true everyday sports car)
Disadvantages: gas mileage, lack of low end torque, Mazda service
...9500 rpm limit. The torque could be more fantastic and to really get it going it takes a bit of revving, but with an engine this orgastically smooth revving is 50% of the fun. Not to mention the fact that the RX8 weighs in at a feathery 1309kg which means even with its diminutive torque, it's acceleration is swift with 0-62 mph coming up in approximately 6.0s. That other 50% of enjoyment lies in the perfect handling. With a weight distribution of 50/50, a stern chassis and incredibly communicative, light yet powerful steering this machine begs to be thrown into the corners. It glides through the bends as you shift down, accelerate through the apex of the corner and hurdle onto a straight where you fly on towards a top speed of 150mph. The sticky y-rated potenza tires help to keep the car on the road and even if all that grip gives out...

Epson RX600
Advantages: LCD screen, front USB socket, contact sheet function, standalone features
Disadvantages: flimsy front panel, bit slow
...Epson's RX600 combo combines a scanner, card reader and printer into an eye catching silver and dark grey package. Unlike many of its peers, the RX600 can be used without a PC and is in effect an all in one digital media mini-lab.
Inside the Box
The Epson RX600 bundles the unit itself along with a slide adaptor and a raft of software. Installation is straight forward although we thought it was odd that the front panel was supplied separately. This needed to be clipped on but felt flimsy and could easily be pulled off again. A strange design decision on an otherwise well built unit.
Standalone
The Epson RX600 can act like a colour (or B&W) photocopier. The device can print pictures from prints, negatives or any of the standard digital media cards. You can adjust the image's contrast, brightness saturation and sharpness as well...

Mazda RX8 - Running and owning
Advantages: Handling, brakes and performance
Disadvantages: High fuel costs and massive dpreciation
...a front tyre puncture, no spare wheel and to cap it all the AA couldn't tow the car from the front, had to take the wheel to the tyre shop for a replacement.
Dealer servicing is a must, but comes at a price. For instance at 36,000mile/3year service the sparkplugs require replacing. You guessed it...Mazda make their own special plugs for the RX8 and at £160 for a set of four they should be extra special.
Personally if you are considering one of these, I would shop around for the best new price and get rid of the car before the warranty runs out, but be prepared for massive depreciation....

Halfway Between RX and Pharmaceutical
Advantages: An excellent album blending Ska and Pop Punk to perfection.
Disadvantages: Better RX Bandits albums have been released than this.
...Originally released in 1998 with the band named The Pharmaceutical Bandits, 'Halfway Between Here and There' was re-released in 1999 under the bands then new name of RX Bandits. The track list was reordered for the re-release, and I must say that the second choice of ordering was far superior to the first. 'Halfway Between Here and There' was the second studio album released by the band RX Bandits, since then a further three albums have been recorded and released however. A new album tends to emerge every two or three years from RX Bandits, and given that the last studio album '...And The Battle Begun' was released back in 2006 it would seem that it shouldn't be too long until the next emerges.
Kicking off with 'What If', this is a strong album from the band blending a mixture of ska, punk rock, and even pop punk also. It clocks in...

Motorhispania RX50
Advantages: High top speed and aceleration
Disadvantages: Expensive to repair
...The motorhispania RX50 is a very fast and reliable motorbike. It is a manual 6 gear bike, which allows quick aceleration and high top end speed for a 50cc engine and is legal to ride at 16.
Other bikes that are in the same league as the Motorhispania RX50 include, Aprilia RS50, Rieju RS2 Matrix, Yamaha TZR50, Derbi GPR50, and the Cagvia Mito 50.
What makes the Motorhispania apeal to me more and rise above the others, is that it is the biggest bike out of the lot, 9/10ths real size where as the others are only 8/10s. Also it is uncommon, unlike the Aprilia RS50 and so is classier to have while also not being hard to find and purchase like the Yamaha TZR50, and the Cagvia Mito 50 therefore having a smaller price tag.
The Derbi GPR50 is the slowest out of the lot, although can be fast when tuned up. The Rieju RS2 Matrix is...

The Sherwood RD6103 - A Real Bargain!
Advantages: Loud, Great Sound Quality, Lots Of Control, Cheap!
Disadvantages: Large physical size, Poor Remote Control
...I was looking for a cheap, good quality Home Cinema amp that would be used mainly for music and DVDs. After looking through pages of Sony and JVC models, I stumbled across the Sherwood RD6103.
At first, I must say I wasn't particularly impressed. With only 65 watts of power per channel and no 6.1 or 7.1 support, I was sceptical to say the least. Anyway, as I was on a strict budget and the RD6103 did seem a good buy, I went to a local Hi-Fi dealer to try one out.
I was not expecting what I saw! In the flesh, the unit looked clean and professional, with nice touches such as rounded edges and handy connectors for Audio/Video inputs on the front of the unit.
It supports video switching, allowing a single connection to a TV with automatic selection of audio/video inputs.
The sound quality from this amp is spectacular, giving...

Mazda RX8 230bhp
Advantages: Very quick, good looking car, 4-seater sports car, comfortable on short and long journeys
Disadvantages: uses fair amount of oil, poor reversing vision, road holding on snow and ice poor
...I bought my Mazda RX8 230bhp two years ago as an ex demonstrator (2000 miles on clock) It has most of the extras you can imagine - 6 CD multi changer in dash, sat nav, heated seats, etc
The car is a real pleasure to drive, very quick off the mark. The high revving rotary engine takes some getting use to and you tend to change gear too early and not get the full benefit out of the engine at the higher revs, as it is designed to do. Once you get use to it, it is a flying machine!
The car turns heads wherever you go and is extremeley comfortable on both short and long journeys. We took ours to France last year and it was a pleasure to drive, and the sat nav was a godsend!!
The boot space is surprisingly spacious for a sports car and we managed to get all of our luggage for a fortnight in France in it. Boot space is saved by...

I love my RX8 because...
Advantages: Real Four Door Practicality in a Fun to Drive Sports coupé
Disadvantages: Frequent oil changes and high fuel consumption
...My RX8 is a year old now. I had a wonderful first year with the car and am looking forward to at least another couple of years happy motoring with my 230 bhp model. I have the leather seat option along with a sunroof.
When I was choosing this car I wanted something performance orientated that handled well but offered some degree of practicality. I wanted to be able to take the family out in the car at weekends or even for short breaks without having to lumbar around in the wife's MPV. I looked at the A3 V6, and even borrowed one for the weekend from a friendly dealer. Whilst the performance was there, the drive of the car just wasn't engaging enough.
There are probably a number of other models I could have looked at, but having seen the RX-8 at the motorshow I wanted to take it out for a test drive first. The driving experience...
