Southport, jewel of the north

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: Unless you are a big Blackpool fan!

...I must come clean and say that my views of Southport are undoubtedly biased as it is my home town, although I haven't lived there for over ten years. I think I now visit infrequently enough to see the changes, yet frequently enough to be familiar with the town. Southport was built as a resort town but has always lived in the shadow of its bigger and brasher neighbour, Blackpool. To be fair, if you like Blackpool, then go there. Southport will only disappoint. If you're still open-minded then read on. Southport is a mid-sized town on the Lancashire (technically Merseyside) coast about 15 miles north of Liverpool. Its most well known feature is the impressive shopping boulevard, Lord Street. This broad tree-lined street benefits from almost continuous cast iron and glass Victorian canopies which serve to shelter the shopper from...

Southport airshow, great, stunning, awesome!!

Advantages: The great planes!, army, activities!
Disadvantages: No red arrows :-(

...I have always loved planes all my life the power, thrust, speed everything about them and I especially love unique planes and air shows are the best places to go for the unique planes and today on the 10th of September was the Southport air show and was the perfect opportunity for me to go and watch a few of the best unique planes in the world. I have literally just got back in from the air show and I am on my computer writing a review on it because I think it was so stunning. -*-*- A little history about the place -*-*- Southport has been a great location for all the family since the Victorian times and I don't know how long the air show has been going but my Nan says when she was a child it was going and that was about 70 years ago, as I just mentioned Southport is a great place to go for all the family and Southport has a beach I...

Top of the shops.............

Advantages: see above
Disadvantages: see above

...Advantages: Loads of stuff available, good prices Disadvantages: can get busy at christmas time so much so people abandon their shopping I am a huge Asda fan, it's where I do most of my shopping and I know where everything is which makes it easier when dragging 3 kiddies along with you! In my local Asda we have a photo centre, cafe, George, electricals, homewear, toys, bakery, pizzaria, rottisary (chicken place lol), fresh meats counter and all the usual foody aisles plus we have a petrol station, cash machines and bus stop. It's the largest shopping store we have although we do have a Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Co-Op, Farm Foods and Iceland. I have never had a bad experience with Asda and the stock is usually replenished quite quickly! They have such a huge range that I know I can do my weekly shop and more there. Everything...

Pleasure Land - Southport

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: Crowds

...Southport is a great day out for all the family, especially if you get the weather! We all went to Southport a couple of weeks ago, the weather was cracking the pavements the beaches were packed and everyone just looked like they were having a really good day. We only took a walk around the Pleasure Land Complex, looking at all the rides and all the kids enjoying themselves. Unfortunately we were unable to let Jessica go on anything as she is only 8months old. We did however go into Southport Zoo. It cost us £** for 2 adults and under 2 year old go free. It was fantastic, it's only small but you need at least two hours to walk around and see everything. They had everything from Goats to Crocodiles. They were doing a bit of refurbishment when we went and some of the enclosures were being worked on but apart from that it was...

The Real Southport

Advantages: Lord Street
Disadvantages: Run Down

...I used to live in Southport, I can tell you about the real Southport. You will not find a lot of sand on Southport's beach the reason why is there is a sandworks situated in Marshside, this sandworks takes all the sand off the beach. You can park on the beach for a couple of quid, the reason why is it's not very often you see the tide come in. The beach is completely disgusting; it's full of rubbish in my opinion it's a health hazard it's not unusual to see used syringes, condoms and sanitary towels. Southport has a pier with a train running along it, there is a pub at the end. Southport has a fair it's a bit run down, some of the rides could do with a lick of paint. You would be lucky to see a souvenir shop, although there are plenty of pubs and take away establishments. But Lord Street the main shopping area is...

shopping heaven

Advantages: great bargains
Disadvantages: queues

...Primark is one of the greatest shops that i find that every time i go in there you can guarantee that i will come out having brought something. When you go into Primark you are guaranteed that you will always find a bargain and at the fraction of the cost of any other shops. Primark has come on in leaps and bounds over the years it stocks a greater range of items that are more in line with the fashions of today and at a great price. A few years ago i would never have even thought to go to Primark, but as they finally put one in my local town centre i always have a look for a bargain. Primark stocks everything from ladies, mens , childrens and homeware. In the ladies section you will find shoes, bags, jewellery, t shirts, lingerie, jeans, trousers, skirts, jumpers, jackets and night wear. In the mens sections you have jeans...

Shopping with Teenagers

Advantages: Sells every item of clothing possible
Disadvantages: Busy at peak times

...Clothes shopping is never an easy task when you have kids in tow. It doesn?t matter if they?re toddlers, young or teenagers, they are still a pain in the proverbial backside when you?re trying to look round the shops and I can guarantee that my teenage son will be moaning and groaning within half an hour when we go shopping. Back in the Summer we decided to brave the busy Ipswich shopping centre, the prime motive to get the kids kitted out for the new school term. After we?d paid the perfunctory visit to the school clothing department in Debenhams we set off down the street to have a wander round the shops. I was absolutely amazed then my son stopped outside Primark and suggested we had a look inside. Teenagers are renowned for wanting designer labels aren?t they? I propelled him inside quick as a flash, before he could see...

Pleasureland, Southport (UK)

Advantages: Kids Entertainment, nice views
Disadvantages: Overpriced

...Parents are always stuck for idea's where to take the kids during school holidays (well i am) so one morning we decided to take a trip out to Southport, it wasn't raining (although it tried to a few times) but was windy, which didn't put us off as we were planning on going to Pleasureland, a mini theme park if you like thats been at Southport for years. It was just me, my mum and my 5 year old daughter so we weren't expecting it to cost that much so off we went, once we got there it wasn't too bad to find a parking space, theres plenty of spaces along the main road (if you go early) theres a few car parks and one just outside Pleasureland which is FREE, all others vary from £1.50 for an hour to £4.00 for 5 hours. Theres plenty of Chip shops and take-aways along the main road if your hungry, a few gift shops and if your lucky, some...

ASDA, THE ONLY TRUE ONE STOP SHOP?

Advantages: Vast Range of Products. Value For Money. Some Stunning (Non-Food) Bargains. George Clothes. Fewer "Trick" Offers.
Disadvantages: Dodgy Trolleys. Huge Check Out Queues.

...WHO ARE THEY? In the simplest of terms, ASDA is a nationwide "superstore" chain. My definition of the word "superstore" is as primarily a grocery store, with ancillary departments - clothes, electricals etc, rather like those in a department store. To fully qualify as a superstore in 2006, they will also have to retail petrol. In short a one stop shop if you like. ASDA - Associated Northern Dairies, a good old homespun north of England company yes? Well once upon a time, maybe. Now for some years part of the gigantic American Wal-Mart chain which, in the US at least, exercises colossal buying power and is able to control many sectors of the economy. As a matter of interest, in 1999 Wal-Mart paid £6.7 billion for Asda, at that time creating the world's largest retailer. In total the Wal-mart group has over 4,300 stores worldwide...
