...PC World, the best computer shop ever! Massive choice, great sales staff. OK, stop screaming at me for being a madwoman and read my little story! ~~~ Fabulous Store ~~~ I once worked for PC World, in their Lakeside store. It was fabulous. I was actually there on opening day (read on to find out what I was doing). The store was then privately owned by a polish immigrant called Jan Murray and there were only two branches. These shops were an answer to a prayer for many PC buffs. Opening day was fantastic, extra staff were brought in from the Croydon branch and we were all rushed off our feet. I spent most of the day standing by the front door giving out free burgers! Another colleague spent all day running backwards and forwards to McDonalds to keep me supplied. The Computer Shop Scandle - My £200 Bill Shock

I clearly asked him if my files could be copied but he never said anything about installing the operating system at an extra cost! I left the store in the end paying over £200 for what was meant to be a simple ram upgrade. The staff had been rude, hadn't told me in full what I was buying and for how much. They seemed to want me to buy more of their products then to get my simple ram upgrade. That was back in 2001. I returned to the shop in March this year. All of these items are very competitively priced- usually the cheapest around, but if they aren?t the cheapest they would usually be only a couple of quid- if that dearer. ...The PC in PC World quite clearly stands for neither Polite nor Courteous. Nor Personal Computer even, if the knowledge of the staff is anything to go by. Recently, my PC broke down way beyond my fixing capabilities and I found that the small independent I bought it from 18 months previously had now closed down. Ditto another couple of small traders, and so in desperation I took it to PC World. ...PC WORLD staff are a disgrace. My own experience has on sevreral ocassions led me to believe that the staff at PC World are sadly lacking of any in depth knowledge regarding the products they sell. They either do not know or, more likely, they are inadequatly trained. I recently wanted to expand the number of USB ports on my system and asked an assistant how I should go about it. She asked me what a USB was then said that she didn't think they sold them. I then asked to speak with one of their service engineers who was bustling about in their service department. He told me I needed an internal USB Card at a cost of £40 plus cables at £10 for each device I wanted to connect. In total I was offered a solution for £ 80. I declined and was then informed by a waiting customer that I could buy an external 4 port hub off the shelf for just...

PC World - pretty 'Run of the Mill'

Advantages: most things in stock, competetive prices, good special offers
Disadvantages: slow service

...I am a frequent visitor to our local PCWorld more for convenience than for anything else as it is the only half decent computer shop around the area I live. Price wise they are generally pretty competetive and most items are available from stock. Staff though, seem a little under informed about the products they sell. I recently found an item on the shelf which 5 minutes earlier a technical assistant had told me was not yet available! There are from time to time some special offers which are worth looking at and overall their range of products is quite good. Technical support is average and be prepared for a 3 or 4 day wait if your system goes in for service or upgrade. To sum up, a good range of products at realistic prices but an average store...

PC world of rip-offs

Advantages: Warm on a winters day
Disadvantages: Overpriced, poor staff knowledge, poor levels of stock

...about value pc's on ebuyer which they bought and have been happy with (i gave them my email address to help them out). If you are a novice where computing is concerned avoid PC world, they seem to prey on people's insecurities of computng. Most independant computer shops are much more helpful and will usually build you exactly what you want for a lower price. They offer some services like transfering data from one computer to another and virus scanning. A Technician at a store explained some of the processes to me and made them sound very complicated and with the slightest error could cause huge amounts of damage. They were once again taking advantage of insecurities using computers. I was quoted around £40 to transfer 1.5 GB of data from a desktop to a laptop. At no point did they mention using a 2 GB USB data stick which can be bought...
