...Rock Shox seem to have the budget corner of the fork market well and truly cornered and this latest tora is no exception. Other manufacturers budget forks are cheap, heavy, flexy and not very pleasant to ride on but the tora blows away all these expectations. It comes in at a sensible (but no lightweight) weight, but makes up for this with excellent lateral stiffness. The travel is extremely plush for a fork in this price range and absorbs both small trail bumps as well as large drops with ease. This particular U Turn model allows adjustable travel and the fork features both V brake mounts as well as an IS disk mount. Rock Shox are known for their reliability and with regular servicing this fork should last a very long time. Simply brilliant for the money...

Review of Rock Shox Tora 302 U-Turn 2008

A post-modern soundscape

Advantages: unusual, interesting sounds
Disadvantages: not all astounding 'songs'

...I bought this album purely on the strength of 'phat planet' and 'afrika shox', two astoundingly brilliant songs that are still by far my favourites on the album. Initially I have to admit that I found the album a little disappointing. I think this was just because it wasn't anything like what I was expecting. Normally into groups like the Prodigy, I was expecting an album full of tracks in the standard format. Yet what 'Rhythm and Stealth' presents isn't that at all. 'Rhythm and Stealth' is a CD of Leftfield's music, rather than Leftfield's songs. '4/6 War', 'Rino's Prayer' and 'Dub Gusset' are more collections of sound ambiences, odd electronic beats and sound stabs than a song in the traditional sense. My problem was that I tried to listen to all the tracks as songs within themselves. This is not where 'Rhythm and Stealth' excels...

Disadvantages: a bit of a mixed bag

...this cd was slated by some people for not being as good as leftism but that is a bit unfair, this is not bad at all. it is hard to describe the style, most of the tracks have a hard techno beat and baseline but are much slower than real techno. you will know the start of 'phat planet' from that guinness advert with the waves and the horses and the single 'afrika shox' is an interesting track (feat. afrika bambaataa). but for me the bast tracks are 'el cid' and 'swords', these are both more laid back grooves and they really grow on you. some of the other tracks are less successful but overall well worth a listen...

Advantages: Fantastic bike for the money

...A super bike for the money. The M4 frame is top notch and is very responsive through the corners and when you put the power down no power is lost. The Avid Juicy 3 brakes are good to as you would hope although they have a fair bit of travel on the leavers before they bite. The only components that let the bike down are the RockShox Tora 302 SL forks due to them not being so smooth in the travel, and the other problem I found are the tyres that are rubbish in damp off road conditions. They tyres are ok for dry conditions but in the UK when do we get those (very rarely). All in all a very good fun bike for the money....

A Good Little Runner

Advantages: Good spec on bike, sturdy, mid range price, value for money
Disadvantages: Not too exciting

...with this aspect. So what do I like about the bike? I do, however, like the front Tora Rock Shox fork which work well on all surfaces. I like to have a little give on the suspension as opposed to full lockout; having a little damping effect mean the bike handles very well on road cycling and off road tracks equally. I need to swap between a nice flat tarmac track to gravel then full on bumpy farm track when commuting to work and the degrees of suspension on the Rock Shox give an enjoyable and comfortable performance. The Tektro Auriga hydraulic brakes have been spot on for me, almost on par with the Hope system I had on my Marin. The manufacturers class the brakes as 'powerful', which is a slight understatement; I had to really brake hard the other day in dry conditions (think: driving test emergency stop) and it stopped dead without me...

Advantages: The features are just endless, the saddle was the comfyest one that I have ever placed my cheeks onto.

...Hey! Are you a mountain bike junkie like my good self? If so, take a look at the Kona Explosif and other Kona's availiable in bike shops here there and everywhere. When I first got my Explosif (to save time, it will be called Rumplestiltskin Jnr. herewith), I immediatly upgraded Rumplestiltskin Jnr.'s front forks to RockShox Judy XC's which made the front end a whole lot lighter and easier to control. My option was to opt for some Kona Project 2's for Rumplestiltskin Jnr. but I decided to go with the Judy's. As for braking, well I sure as hell just left the brakes that were on there originally, as they were damn fine. I tuned them to hell and beyond (not radio one tee hee) and if I said stop, I stopped! The rear derailier on Rumplestiltskin Jnr. needed replacing after my first race, so I whacked a 98 Shimano Reverse Pull XTR...

Special Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc 2007

Advantages: Top quality kit
Disadvantages: Nothing at all

.... The frame itself is all well finished to. The welds are pretty big but that's Aluminium for you. Its apparently made from M4 aluminium which is one of Specialized's innovations. This makes it lighter and stronger than previous years models. You also get a replacable rear gear hanger. If you have ever bent one of these then you will know that this is well worth having. FORKS I don't claim to know much about suspension forks, I normally buy them and see how I go. The Rockhopper comes with RockShox Recon 335 SL. I think these are new for this year. I have to say that they ride very well. The action when you hit a tree root is very smooth and a lot better than the forks they fit to the lesser models. They quote 100mm of travel on these forks, again I have to say that I would reckon you could get close to that. Most forks never get close to...
