Advantages: Historical town, loads of little shops, cafes, bars, pubs, restaurants Disadvantages: Hills, cobbles - accessibity problems
...Shrewsbury, county town of Shropshire and 10 miles from the Mid-Wales border, hits the headlines every once and awhile - usually when we're upto our eyeballs in flood water! Not surprising really when you consider its situation, slap bang in the middle of a loop in the River Severn. Shrewsbury has been my home for over 15 years now and I'd like to show you that there's more to Shrewsbury than its river. I hope that you will agree with me that it is a very special place.
Shrewsbury is a genuine historic market town with markets having been held here for centuries. The heart of the town, The Square, has been a market place since the 1300s. It was also the site of the town's ducking stool and pond.
Some associate Shrewsbury with Dickens. The famous Christmas Carol with George C Scott was filmed here. You can still visit Scrooge...

Review of Shrewsbury in General
Advantages: Interesting look at modern Shrewsbury Disadvantages: None
...This is Shrewsbury is one of the best modern photographic records of an English county town that I have seen in a very long time indeed. It is written by Al Smith, Mike Ashton and Danny Beath and edited by Fay Easton and Phil Northwood, published by the Shrewsbury Town Centre Management Partnership. If only all town centre management partnerships were as pro-active and as go ahead as Shrewsbury's!
For me, the book captures all the many different, somewhat mercurial moods and nuances that make up the medieval and paradoxically at the same time, modern town of Shrewsbury.
There's a young man enjoying a quiet pint in a smokey pub.
And facing the ethereal beauty of the Kingsland Bridge over the River Severn early one morning.
There are photographs which reflect the proud military history of Shrewsbury, yet these are juxtaposed...
Advantages: Great shops, great food, great atmosphere, a great place to come! Disadvantages: none the town is fantastic!
...Shrewsbury, the place i have called home for all of my life, the county town of Shropshire...i suppose it deserves a review doesnt it!
At a glance I would think, Castle, Medieval Town, Museums and The Birthplace of Darwin, a little bit too historic for me! However it is also home to loadsa other great stuff!
Rowleys House is my favourite museum in the town. It's great! They even have a dressing up box! Its full of info on the town and the history of it. You can look in the room where Henry Tudor stayed and also at lots of archaic clothing. It has a fantastic souvenir shop which i would definately recommend a visit to.
The best bit of Rowley's House to me would have to be the board about the origins of the town's name. The name Shrewsbury is the centre of an ongoing debate amongst the residents here. Half of us pronounce it Shro...
Advantages: Nice relaxed town, good shopping Disadvantages: Rail link could be better
...Shrewsbury is a great place to stay, whether for young or old. There are a wide range of bars to suit all tastes although the nightclubs can be a bit of a lottery. The main shopping centres, Pride Hill and the Charles Darwin Centre are very good, with the usual range of highstreet shops and a few others. As far as getting here, then it can be a bit difficult by train, with a lot of trains requiring changes at Crewe, Wolverhampton or Birmingham, and the sprinter services that connect Shrewsbury with these places are reknowned for breaking down. There are a lot of nice mediaeval timber framed houses, and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Just outside Shrewsbury there are some very pretty villages, like Condover, some great walking territory and the Welsh mountains within easy reach, not to mention some great golf courses (Shrewsbury GC...

Review of Shrewsbury in General
Advantages: Lovely old building with excellent rooms Disadvantages: possibly location is being used as a base for Shrewsbury
...made to order and is delicious. The menu for the evening meal looked impressive - although we ate in Shrewsbury so cannot really comment.
The bar is pretty good for a hotel, but on a wet autumn evening it was not enough to keep us there all evening. The only downside for us was the location - too far out of the city to walk, so got a taxi, and had a long wait for a taxi back. The quite location however will probably be perfect for others.
The other point of interest for the stay - was a fire in the middle of the night, so we were all out in the carpark at 3.00am! It was well organised however with free hot drinks and snacks provided, and we were soon back in our rooms. No lasting damage was done.
I got an excellent price deal due to a business relationship, it normally costs around £110-£125 for a double room b&b.
Overall...
Advantages: Easy to get to. Plenty of History Disadvantages: None
...If like me, you think there are plenty of places in England to holiday without going abroad, then try my home town Shrewsbury.
OK it's not a city, but it will probably be one of the prettiest, Olde Worldy places you can go to.
Shrewsbury is full of black and white buildings within the town. It prides itself with it's own Castle, Abbey and full medieval history. It has been the home town of many famous individuals such as Charles Darwin, Percy Thrower and more recently the name of "Cadfael" has been added to it's list of famous sons.
In the middle of Shrewsbury, next to the river Severn, you can find the "Quarry". Percy Thrower himself used to look after the spectacular gardens, and apparently designed most of the new "Dingle".
Next to the "Quarry" there is the beautiful round church...St.Chads. Within it's graveyard you can find...
Advantages: pleasant surroundings Disadvantages: none
...I travelled by train to Shrewsbury last summer and had a great day out.
This historical town has a great atmosphere and many delights to suit all ages and tastes.
Anyone who has been to the city of York will enjoy a visit to Shrewsbury they are similar kind of places.
The historical aspect of Shrewsbury is very interseting with many old victorian style buildings and plenty of interseting walks with hidden discoveries yet only a few minutes away from the high street.
The shops are very pleasant with big names such as Woolworths present and there are plenty of bars and places to hang out for a drink.
Shrewsbury strikes me as a safe ,friendly , interesting town one which may not at first appear on the map as a place to visit .
however it is in a naturally scenic part of the UK with great surrounding countryside and views too.
I...
Advantages: Lovely, Relaxing town with Amazing scenery Disadvantages: Is there one?...maybe walking...due to hilly areas.
...Hello people...
The reason of writing this review is because of the accusation of racism in the town. Well I am going to write something about the town that first welcome me to England and hopefully managed to 'undo' the 'damage'.
September 2001, I arrived at this town. My first impression was...oh my god...this town is a forest!!! Being from a tropical country greenery is a staple to me which makes Shrewsbury such a perfect place to be. Although the weather betrayed me!
My school which overlooks the River Severn and the lovely park, The Quarry, strategically situated at the slope made my Maths class bearable. I still remember when the river level rose to about a quarter of the park, some of the swans 'got lost' and instead 'played' around at the higher ground.
The idea of seasons was nicely shown by the town. The copper...
Advantages: Listed buiding. Magnificent views and walks. Disadvantages: Expensive
...Earlier this year, my eldest daughter and her husband asked us if they could move back in with us for three to four months in-between houses. We agreed and he date for the move was set. Dave and I decided we would go away for a few days prior to the due date aware of just how much work would be involved in the move.
We didn?t want to go too far and our main aim for the few days was that of relaxation. The Lighthouse in Llandudno had been recommended to us and we were signposted to the website, http://www.distinctlydifferent.co.uk/ddgift.htm. Unfortunately, The Lighthouse was fully booked for the time we wanted but listed on the site was The Citadel in Shrewsbury.
Described as ?a dower house in the form of a miniature castle?, The Citadel was located just outside Hawkstone Park (famous for its follies) and just half an hour?s drive...
Advantages: £ star hotel near to town centre Disadvantages: Oldy worldy, small car park
...Forty years ago as a student at a catering college, I went to work along with several other friends as a waitress at a ball at a prestigious hotel in Shrewsbury. For this I earned the princely sum of £1.00 and a meal! Extortion comes to mind!
Things have moved on and last week I went to the same hotel, now under new management and this time I was waited on, and enjoyed the experience much better.
The Lion hotel is reported as being a 16th century coaching inn, situated at the top of Wyle Cop, a hill leading into the town, just after crossing the English Bridge and it is a Grade I listed building. It is a great situation for exploring the lovely streets with beautiful black and white houses and shops. Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire in the West Midlands and is a historic market town.
As you enter from the main road...
