...I travelled by train to Shrewsbury last summer and had a great day out. This historical town has a great atmosphere and many delights to suit all ages and tastes. Anyone who has been to the city of York will enjoy a visit to Shrewsbury they are similar kind of places. The historical aspect of Shrewsbury is very interseting with many old victorian style buildings and plenty of interseting walks with hidden discoveries yet only a few minutes away from the high street. The shops are very pleasant with big names such as Woolworths present and there are plenty of bars and places to hang out for a drink. Shrewsbury strikes me as a safe ,friendly , interesting town one which may not at first appear on the map as a place to visit . however it is in a naturally scenic part of the UK with great surrounding countryside and views too. ...Shrewsbury is a great place to stay, whether for young or old. There are a wide range of bars to suit all tastes although the nightclubs can be a bit of a lottery. The main shopping centres, Pride Hill and the Charles Darwin Centre are very good, with the usual range of highstreet shops and a few others. As far as getting here, then it can be a bit difficult by train, with a lot of trains requiring changes at Crewe, Wolverhampton or Birmingham, and the sprinter services that connect Shrewsbury with these places are reknowned for breaking down. There are a lot of nice mediaeval timber framed houses, and the atmosphere is very pleasant. ...If like me, you think there are plenty of places in England to holiday without going abroad, then try my home town Shrewsbury. OK it's not a city, but it will probably be one of the prettiest, Olde Worldy places you can go to. Shrewsbury is full of black and white buildings within the town. It prides itself with it's own Castle, Abbey and full medieval history. It has been the home town of many famous individuals such as Charles Darwin, Percy Thrower and more recently the name of "Cadfael" has been added to it's list of famous sons. In the middle of Shrewsbury,next to the river Severn, you can find the "Quarry". Percy Thrower himself used to look after the spectacular gardens, and apparently designed most of the new "Dingle". ...This is Shrewsbury is one of the best modern photographic records of an English county town that I have seen in a very long time indeed. It is written by Al Smith, Mike Ashton and Danny Beath and edited by Fay Easton and Phil Northwood, published by the Shrewsbury Town Centre Management Partnership. If only all town centre management partnerships were as pro-active and as go ahead as Shrewsbury's! For me, the book captures all the many different, somewhat mercurial moods and nuances that make up the medieval and paradoxically at the same time, modern town of Shrewsbury. ...Shrewsbury, county town of Shropshire and 10 miles from the Mid-Wales border, hits the headlines every once and awhile - usually when we're upto our eyeballs in flood water! Not surprising really when you consider its situation, slap bang in the middle of a loop in the River Severn. Shrewsbury has been my home for over 15 years now and I'd like to show you that there's more to Shrewsbury than its river. I hope that you will agree with me that it is a very special place. Shrewsbury is a genuine historic market town with markets having been held here for centuries. The heart of the town, The Square, has been a market place since the 1300s. ...I went Christmas shopping in Shrewsbury a couple of weeks ago and I was well impressed. The town was very pretty with the Christmas lights and decorations about. The shops were ideal for a good mooch! There were the department stores that you would get in any major town, but there was also a good selection of more unusual shops for browsing and finding just the thing you've been looking for. There were also plenty or food outlets - I can recommend the pasty shop which is where we got our lunch. Definitely well worth a visit.... Read review

...Shrewsbury - my town of birth and home town for 32 years - is a fabulous place to come and visit , no matter what your age , tastes or interests are. With buildings and "scenery" ranging from the castle and dozens of timber framed tudor buildings through to wide open hills and hillocks just begging to be wandered over. Shopping , I am reliable informed by my wife , is excellent with a fantastic blend of national chain stores and small local boutiques and shops . This feeling carries on the eating places where coffee and meals can be enjoyed anywhere from small cafes embedded in medievil buildings right up to modern restaurants. Drinking holes vary widely and it is said that there are over 50 licensed establishments within the one square mile of the town centre heart. ...Before I moved from the South East, the border towns of Shrewsbury, Chester, Ludlow were just names on a map. If this is the case for you it needs putting right. All three are worth visiting and here I am going try and tempt you to consider Shrewsbury. So is it worth it? YES. It's a charming market town nestled on a hill and virtually surrounded by the River Severn. Picturesque was a word made for Shrewsbury and it is a lovely place to wander around at a leisurely pace. Ideal for a weekend break, it is also a great place to start from if discovering Mid Wales and the South Shropshire Hills. I give details of how to get to Shrewsbury below ('how to find it'). The centre of Shrewsbury, thanks to the river, has been largely protected from the character assassination that many towns have had to endure. Sure it has its malls with the names... Read review

.... Perhaps because my ancestors came from Wales? Perhaps! Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire and is well worth a visit as it is steeped in history. It was in Shrewsbury that Prince Rupert made his headquarters during the Civil War. The River Severn that runs and meanders through Shrewsbury helps to make it a very special town indeed. Telford Newtown I have already covered, so will not touch upon here. There are other towns in Shropshire that are worth visiting. Although post-Beaching public transport is not as good as it should be, and Telford, Shrewsbury and Ludlow are the only major towns with rail services. There is Bridgnorth with its famous cliff railway and Severn Valley preserved train line, Market Drayton with its history of being the town were Ginger Bread was first made and Oswestry which is more Welsh than English, Much... ...I came back to Britain for Christmas this year and needed to get from London to Shrewsbury, and with all the problems with trains, realised that the only choice worth entertaining was getting a coach. I booked my seat early, and got my tickets sent out to Vienna (this cost no extra) and was delighted when I saw that I could get a direct coach from Victoria, as opposed to having to probably change at Wolverhampton or Birmingham if I had taken the train. I arrived at Victoria to see what looked like pandemonium, with pepole swarming onto buses, but was amazed that this was soon sorted out, and we were off on our way, up to Shrewsbury. National Express had had the forethought to get extra buses lined up for the Christmas period. We got out of London without too much difficulty and soon were eating up the asphalt on the motorway.
