Disadvantages: Price but still worth it for a decent camera

...** Nikon D40x Digital SLR ** This is my first digital SLR camera I really like taking pictures of mainly our families dogs and cars my main hobbies, my other half had previously had been using a digital SLR that belonged to his dad, so we both went a long to Jessops that is well know for selling really good photography stuff. We had a look at various models of camera including the Canon Eos 400d which is one of this cameras biggest rival models, also looked at four or five other digital SLR models. Then eventually we started looking at the Nikon D40x my other half knew someone who had the previous model to this the Nikon D40 which had been really good, the other half had used it previously and found it a really good quality camera. Nikon D40x

Advantages: Small, feature packed, easy to use, Built in Help system, auto and scene modes
Disadvantages: only three AF points, manual not so good

...we can see the result straight away. I should say that I am not a professional photographer, more an amateur who wanted to get his hands on a Digital SLR and see what he could do. So this review will be from an average joe. I was originally going to purchase a Pentax K100d as it was the cheapest DSLR around and with anti shake, even though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon. I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end I think I would have had to upgrade the 6MP Pentax...

Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-f5.6 APO DG Macro

Advantages: Decent quality on a budget but only for APS-C digital SLR's.
Disadvantages: Really quite poor when used with full-frame digital SLR's.

...of good quality. I don't know if it is simply a variation between samples but my own APO version appeared to have somewhat 'smoother' zooming than my friend's non APO one. As usual for Sigma, a decent lens hood (barrel type) and a soft case are included in the package. The lens sports a 58mm filter thread, so filters are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Being of more 'ordinary' status in the Sigma hierarchy, this AF 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 DG APO Macro, has none of the more elaborate 'bells and whistles' evident on the more expensive EX range. What does this mean? Well, you don't get Sigma's superb HSM (Hypersonic Motor) AF (auto-focusing) for near silent and very fast AF, resulting in a somewhat more unsophisticated, noisy (although not overly so) and slightly 'harsh' action. Advantages: Excellent image quality and build
Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses

..., where the camera decides everything including whether or not to use flash. After this are several creative modes, which largely change how the image is processed. Then come the manual modes, which offer enthusiasts more control. The D40x is an excellent option for first time DSLR buyers who want a camera that will grow as they grow as photographers. I would highly reccomend it, but if you cannot afford it would also reccomend the D40, a similar camera....

Nikon D40x DSLR

Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality.
Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken

NIKON D40X- An amazing piece of technology!

Advantages: Incredible quality, infininate features, decent price

Advantages: Light, over 10mp, takes SD cards
Disadvantages: Limited lens choice.

...retailers that will only let you have the body and one lens for this much. My only complaint is the lack of choice as far as lenses are concerned. Basically to get full functionality with this camera you have to use the Nikon DX range which at present is fairly limited / expensive. Sigma do some lenses in the HSM range which will also do the trick. Older Nikon / Nikkor lenses can be used but you will loose the auto focus and on some lenses you will also loose the onboard metering facility. In general I am pretty pleased with the D40x....

Sigma EX DG 70-200mm f2.8 HSM Macro

Advantages: Build quality. Finish. Range. Fast maximum aperture.
Disadvantages: Image quality not as good as expected. Chromatic Aberration.

...no less than 18 elements (in 15 groups), including 2 ELD (Extra Low Dispersion) ones, this is no surprise. A little surprisingly perhaps for such a fast (f/2.8) lens with a range of up to 200mm focal length, Sigma have managed to constrain filter thread size to a reasonably economical (over 82mm) 77mm. The lens has a fairly moderate 3x zoom ratio and as such, the design shouldn't have presented too many problems. Accordingly, distortions are impressively low. There is still a small amount of barrel distortion at 70mm focal length, although nothing to worry about. This changes to moderate pincushion distortion at the longer end of the zoom range. Again, nothing to get too upset about. Vignetting is not much of a problem when using the lens on cropped APS-C cameras, due to the sensor utilising only the central 'sweet' spot of the image...

Super Sigma

Advantages: Image quality. Consistent aperture. Internal zoom/focusing. Build. Great with converter.
Disadvantages: Needs a large (tall?) outfit bag. Quite heavy. Quite large.

....6 and EXCELLENT by the time you stop down to f/8. It stays this way until diffraction sets in (to be expected) at the two smallest apertures. This is perfectly normal however and the lens delivers quite amazing performance at this or indeed, any price level. I have used (and tested) this lens with my SIGMA EX APO 1.4x converter and can vouch for the performance being virtually just as good with only the two smallest apertures being POOR. The rest of the range is great and is particularly so when used on APS-C sized sensor cameras where only the central 'sweet spot' of the image circle is utilised. A truly great lens. Get Converted! Sigma EX 1.4x APO Converter

Advantages: Hugely versatile. Compact. Light. Inexpensive. High quality.
Disadvantages: None!

Most people however, I would think, will use this converter with either a longer telephoto prime lens or, one of the few compatible telephoto zoom lenses, when it can very usefully be employed to extend the range, particularly at the longer end of the focal length range. I use my Sigma EX 1.4x APO Converter mostly with my Canon EF 135mm f/2 L USM lens, where it effectively becomes a 190mm f/2.8 lens on my full-frame EOS 5D and a very useful, 300mm f/2.8 with very close focusing. Of course, it has the additional benefit that it is far more compact than any normal 300/f2.8 and still performs superbly.
