Worth the pain - Braun Silk-Epil X'elle
Advantages: Effective and long lasting
Disadvantages: Painful!
...For some reason, despite being blonde and fairly dainty in other respects, I've been cursed with leg hair that belongs to someone else - someone like my big grizzly bear of a boyfriend! It grows so fast that I usually have to shave my legs every day in the summer, which is a right pain. I've tried hair removal creams and found it just took longer, smelt horrible and didn't last any better, and waxing which brought me out in nasty bumps and didn't even get all the hairs. Bah. Anyway, I thought I'd give this a try as I had nothing to lose other than the 50 quid it cost me from Argos (although it's probably available cheaper online), and I've probably spent that loads of times over on razors and shaving foam... I was drawn in by the promise of smooth legs for 4 weeks - too good to be true?...
The Silk-Epil looks rather pretty and is...

Soft and smooth silk-epil
Advantages: Spotlight for seeing little hairs
Disadvantages: slightly painful
...I had the old Braun silk-epil since about 1999 and when it gave up the ghost I started shaving again. After a couple of months I noticed that I was hairier than usual and got really annoyed at having to shave every couple of days so decided to invest in another of Braun's epilators.
I must admit that this particular model comes with lots of accessories (shaving head, small/starter epilator head, intermediate epilator head with massager, advanced epilator head & ice pack with glove) which I find excessive but if you are new to epilating I can see the advantage in being able to get used to using one by building up in stages.
Having come from already using an epilator but having shaved for a couple of months, I used the 40 tweezer head with the intermediate massager heads and found it most comfotable to use especially when compared to my...

Braun 5580 Silk Epil X'elle Body and Face
Advantages: Easy to use, versatile
Disadvantages: Ingrowing hairs
...have managed it myself a couple of times. I actually think that the hairs on my underarms and my bikini line have grown back less dense than before.
However, I have been very disappointed with the results on my legs. My legs are quite hairy and I remove the hairs from the upper and lower parts of my leg...normally I shave them daily which produces a nice smooth effect but is a real pain to have to do all the time. I thought the Braun would mean that I wouldn't have to pay my leg hairs so much attention but it hasn't quite worked out that way. After 2 weeks of epilating every other day, I had the most awful ingrowing hairs on my legs. It didn't seem to affect my underarms or bikini line but my legs were covered in them. One or two got a bit infected and went red and if I ran my hands up my legs, all I could feel were little lumps...

Braun 5585 SILK-EPIL X'elle BODY System+face
Advantages: quicker than tweezing, the light, face and other attachment, ice pack
Disadvantages: can hurt, & tweezers can go blunt after awhile.
...Overall, the epilator is an ok way to get rid of hairs. i feel it seems to work best on people who are not as hairy, because the pulling out of the hairs are not as painful. i tend to use it on the face as well, which does work well. but what i did find, (like with any thing), the more i used it, the twezers became more duller, so therefore not picking up all the hairs so cleanly, esp the light ones. Its now not as sharp like in the beginning when i first had it. The light is also useful esp when doing the face. sometimes you may need a good pair of tweezers just to get them stubbon light ones.
this does work well, and the price is ok, esp with all the other attachments included, e.g the shaver, and the diff levels of epilating.
try to clean it regulary as well.
i gave it a 3 star, cus yeah it can at times, make your...

oooh, ahhh, owww!
Advantages: Less time consuming than shaving
Disadvantages: Painful at first, not as smooth a finish as you would get with shaving
...Reasons for taking the plunge!
Like most of us ladies (and some men?!!) we are always looking for ways to remove unwanted hair and I am no different! For years I have shaved my legs and underarms and experienced the pain of waxing the bikini line! I was fed up with the tiresome job of shaving my legs every other day and an epilator was recommended to me by a friend.
I decided to do a bit of research and was at first quite shocked at the prices of these 'torture tools'! However the promise of smooth legs for up to four weeks was too much of a temptation so I took the plunge! I decided on the Silk-epil model as it was a brand I was aware of and the extras seem to make it a good buy.
The product
This epilator comes with the following attachments:
*Precision head for use on face
*Narrow head for sensitive areas...

Braun silk-epil Xelle 5185
Advantages: Left my legs hair free and less pain than waxing.
Disadvantages: loud
...Hair free and not as painfull as led to believe.
After all these years I invested in an epilator. I always thought it would hurt as everyone I knew had said it was.
When I opened my product it looked scarey. I plugged it into the mains, it has a long wire which made it easier. I was sweating with fear at the noise before even trying. I thought no pain no gain and used the expert head first as there are two different head one for beginners. It is loud and has a light so you can see your hair. After the initial pain which was not bad the massagers took the pain away. It just felt like a sharp tingle. It can be a little more sharp round the ankle but I got over it.
This is better than waxing as that is definitly more painfull and for anyone who wants to make it less scratchy there is an ice pack for the more frightened first time...

I've Got a Brand New Combine Harvester
Advantages: No mess, easy clean and cheaper than salon waxing.
Disadvantages: Most of the multi-heads are ineffectual, no trimmer attachment, pain and a whole pile of skincare things that they don't tell you in the manual.
...Let's get this straight; ignore the what the advertisers will have you think: Epilators are NOT an alternative or substitute for electric shavers/wet razors! Electric shavers/wet razors remove hair ABOVE the root by trimming - epilators remove hair BY the root. If you're considering moving from a shaver/razor to an epilator of any brand or make - DON'T. You'll be in for a whole world of disappointment, and by 'disappointment' I mean PAIN.
If you're really thinking of switching from using a shaver/razor to an epilator, try using wax strips or have a professional salon wax FIRST. (If you survive this trial by pore-nibbling fire ants - you'll appreciate epilators)
The Braun 5580 Silk-Epil Xelle is a mouthful of a title for a product that isn't even Braun's top-of-the-line epilator (for that you'll need the 5680 which comes...

The epilator itself is a little bigger than the palm of my hand and feels quite lightweight. It is blue and white in colour. The front has the on switch. Little pain, big gain!
Advantages: Cost effective, long-lasting results, relatively quick
Disadvantages: Some pain, noisy!
...appears to be the leader in the field with several products for sale in Argos alone, where I purchased my Silk epil Xelle Solo 5170 for £34.99. As I wasn't sure if I would get along with this method of hair removal, I opted for the cheapest one available.
Epilators can be purchased from catalogue stores eg Argos or bigger chemists such as Boots, where they are often on offer.
AT FIRST GLANCE
The epilator is roughly palm-sized, and mine was pink and white although the picture in the catalogue was green so I suppose it's the luck of the draw. The kit came with a drawstring bag for carrying everything, the mains adapter, the epilator itself of course, a starter head for beginners, instructions and a brush for cleaning the unit. The bag makes it easy to take away travelling although the charger is ridiculously big and heavy...
