Soothing Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel

Advantages: An all-time classic album
Disadvantages: None whatsoever

...If ever there was a singer/songwriter duo who could make beautiful music together, it has to be Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.I well remember buying the single of ?Bridge Over Troubled Water? and playing it ad infinitum. It is the last track on this outstanding album, which has many more of Simon and Garfunkel?s finest songs. The album kicks off with the thoughtful ?I Am A Rock? (listen to the lyrics?haven?t we all felt that way at one time or another?) and ?Homeward Bound?, which I?ve always found rather sad. Who can forget ?The 59th Street Bridge Song? (Feelin?Groovy)? Also the classic,?The Boxer?. One of my all-time favourites is ?The Sound Of Silence? (such heartfelt lyrics). The tempo is lifted with ?Mrs Robinson? and ?Keep The Customer Satisfied.? Both of which get the foot tapping, as does ?Cecilia.? Things slow down once again...

Light up, stretch out and let's get (gar)funky

Advantages: Easy listening, some catchy tunes, great value for money
Disadvantages: Some annoying tracks, nothing to write home about

...I was in HMV the other day with my best mate. I was imploring her to please, for the love of all that is good, just TRY to think who the heck sings that song with a woman's name featuring red hair. I mean obviously I meant "Valerie" by The Zuttons but in the fifteen run up to my finally realising that was the album I actually wanted, I spotted this Simon and Garfunkel CD. My best mate and I used to play them all the time when we were in our drunken teens (we were/are a peculiar pair) and my eyes lit up when I saw this. It was cheap at 10.97 and the cover looked quite boring and uninviting but it included a whopping forty tracks including my favourites like "Cecilia" and "Mrs Robinson" so I felt it was definetely worth the money. I gave it a whirl the very next day and was surprised to find a few new favourites almost immediately...

A 40-year old gem : Bridge Over Troubled Water

Advantages: Easy to listen to, interesting songs, tuneful, at the time it was groundbreaking

Look at their eyes - they're on drugs

Disadvantages: I can't think of any

...There's something reassuring, something comforting about knowing that Simon & Garfunkel are out there. They're like that relative you used to see all the time but now but haven't visited for a while. You still like them but not quite enough to actually make the effort to pay a call; it's enough to know that they're there if you need them. You can go years without listening to one of their tracks but when you do it's always a pleasure. This three disc anthology is part greatest hits and part retrospective. It has most, if not all, of their most famous songs and many lesser known or previously unreleased ones. There is a mixture of studio and live recordings and several of the live tracks have introductions from one or other of the duo. Artless Garfunkels

Advantages: Reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Dreadful service

...I spent over 2 hours in Garfunkels in Cambridge on Sunday. I have to say the service was just about as bad as you can possibly get it. It started off well enough, we were soon found a table and we settled down with the Sunday papers. Then we waited, and waited. Eventually a poor waiter for whom we later felt sorry for took our order. It was a simple enough order, we did not want starters and my wife and I had Omelettes whilst the boys had Ribs and Lasgane slightly complicated by a side order of garlic bread. A round of drinks was ordered. Then we waited, and waited. After 10 minutes the drinks duly arrived. And then we waited, and waited. After 40 minutes the poor waiter returned to inform us that the chef (meaning microwave operative and salad tosser) (delete salad and replace with complete) had lost our order and so could we order...

Great compilation album

Advantages: Superb collection of their best songs.
Disadvantages: May not appeal to today's children.

...Simon & Garfunkel are one of the greatest ever duets (perhaps second only to Hall and Oates), bringing their folk rock to the masses. Over the years they produced many great hits. This album is a combination of 14 of their best songs. Their style is simply wonderful. Two guitars produce competing music as they sing in amazing harmony to produce some very beautiful songs. Mrs. Robinson A catchy tune that became the theme to the movie 'The Graduate' featuring Dustin Hoffman. This is a wonderfully cheeky rendition of a classic poppy tune with wonderful lyrics and a great melody. Sound Of Silence, The One of my personal favorites, this melancholy tune has a sad mood to it, as the poetic lyrics trnasfer you to a different world. The song is very quiet and full of harmonies. ...‘Bookends’ was the fourth of Simon & Garfunkel’s five albums made before they split in 1970. Though not their biggest seller, many regard it as their best. In a way, it was their ‘Sergeant Pepper’. Paul Simon had realised that there was more to an album than just a batch of separate songs which could be assembled in any order. Part was, but the rest was something else entirely. ...Released in 1991, The Definitive Simon and Garfunkel contains twenty songs performed together by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. It contains some of their best known pieces of work. ~~~ About the Duo ~~~ They first performed together as a band called Tom and Jerry in the 1950's when they were still at school.
