Singapore - the Hotel 81 chain
Review of Hotel 81 - Gold, Singapore by
webfoot
Advantages: Cheap, clean and safe
Disadvantages: Not for the faint-hearted if you don't like the real world
...I did not mean to stay in a Hotel 81 hotel. I was planning to be in transit through Singapore at my own expense for a day or so.I tried three four-star special offers. The first two came back after about 12 hrs to inform me that their hotel was full on the dates in question.
The third hotel was also full but offered me a hotel, Hotel 81 Geyland on Lorong 20, which they recommended for a cost of about £20 per night. Time was a bit tight ,but the photo looked OK on-line and the price was fantastic so I booked it and this is where I stayed, and stayed again on two further visits later in the year.
This hotel is not for seekers of de-luxe accommodation. The rooms are completely basic and quite small. My room had an air-conditioner (which did not cost extra to use), a small bathroom with toilet and shower and a welcome bag...

Hip Hotel in Singapore
Review of Fullerton Hotel, Singapore by
Erzulie
Advantages: Good Location
Disadvantages: Overrated
...Fullerton is the latest addition to the luxury hotels in the city and even Martine McCutcheon stayed in Fullerton Hotel last time when she was in Singapore!
The Fullerton Building was built in 1928 and has housed the General Post Office, the Exchange, The Chamber of Commerce and The Singapore Club. The most recent occupants were the Singapore Post, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, and a branch of the POSBank.
The Fullerton Hotel enjoys a fabulous location right in front of the Merlion. It is also very close to The Esplanade, the newly opened music and theatre venue. There is an underpass from Fullerton Hotel to One Fullerton which has restaurants and nightclubs.
There are five resutaurants in the hotel. The Courtyard, Lighthouse , Town, The Post Bar and Jade.THe Courtyard is the lobby lounge and the Lighthouse restaurant has...

Singapore has it all.
Review of General: Singapore by
Gwenllian
Advantages: People, food, shopping, the price.
Disadvantages: Pushy shop owners.
...the buses don't announce the stops. For the zoo this was fine because the bus takes you right up to the entrance. Going to Haw Par Villa in southern Singapore was trickier because you have to know and be able to see the stop name to get off. Luckily I was sat next to a lovely lady who saw me fretting and told me exactly when I should get off. I should probably add that I NEVER use buses in the UK, I always drive instead so this probably had something to do with my lack of understanding of buses.
Basically, public transport in Singapore is clean, punctual, efficient, cheap and easy to use. MRT stations are everywhere so you can't really get lost.
**Hotels**
I stayed at the Madras Hotel in Little India for the two weeks I spent in Singapore. It's difficult to give a good description of hotels because they vary so much. A dorm bed...

Singapore Airline Crap
Review of Singapore Airlines - SIA by
petitesquirt
Advantages: What advantages? Should be renamed the NoStar Alliance.
Disadvantages: Too many to list.
...me to stay long nor visit their island country.
Note to Singapore Airline: I get the hint!
Anyway, the SIA manager announced that accommodation was being arranged and we were to collect our bags down at the baggage area. Off we went, through the immigration control, through to baggage control to pick up our baggages. It was complete chaos in the baggage collection area. Employees were as uninformed as the passengers, if not more confused, and did not know what to do. People were gathering around the Singapore airline counter (note, 1 counter and over 300 passengers), asking for information about the next flight out, hotel allocations, missed flights etc. By now I was getting the hysterics just watching the hassled SIA customer service. Serve them right for cancelling my tickets!
Suddenly, the manager announced that there were...

My favourite Singapore hotel
Review of Holiday Inn Park View, Singapore by
VC81
Advantages: Unrivalled location, great facities, wonderful breakfasts
Disadvantages: View of the freeway from some of the rooms
...Of all the hotels I have stayed in in Sing, this is definitely my favourite. It's all the flash, marbled, gilted, chanderliered swankiness you can desire, with great facilities, service and efficiency, as only Singapore can do.
The rooms are well appointed and very clean, with your typical Holiday Inn double beds and choice of pillow firmness, TV, trouser press, tea and coffee etc., and also internet connections, bathrobes, disposable slippers and safes. The large marble bathrooms come complete with a phone for those calls that just can't wait.
One of my favourite features in this hotel is the roof pool. These are common in most Singapore hotels, but this one is a huge, overflowing marble affair, with foliage around the walls, the odd gecko, and is beautifully lit for night swimming, when the temperature is perfect...

Uniquely Singapore!
Review of Singapore by
ukusa
Advantages: Shopping, Cleanliness, Nice People
Disadvantages: HEAT!!!
...Uniquely Singapore!! This is this city's catch phrase. It can be seen on signs as soon as you walk off the plane the moment when you do depart and they wish you a found farewell as the plane departs this fine city.
I am not sure what I thought I would expect from Singapore. However, whatever it was did not even compare to what I found in this spectacular city!
Upon arriving at the Changi airport, one becomes completely in awe of the airport which supports it's own stopover hotel, free movie theatre and spa! This is not to mention the vast amounts of shops and restaurants.
~Immigration~
On departing the plane, you make your way through the beautiful corridors filled with live plants and flowers of spectacular beauty, to the immigration lines. As the airline had not handed out immigration cards before arrival in Singapore...

Singapore's Grand Old Lady
Review of Singapore - Hotel Raffles by
ashford
Advantages: Luxuty,Colonial Atmosphere, great Food, Fine Service
Disadvantages: Expensive
...Singapore's most popular boutique hotel is the world famous 104-room Raffles Hotel which today is the preferred option for the well-heeled celebrities and other members of the rich and famous club. It is located in the heart of the business and shopping district at Beach Road.
The dear old Raffles was built in 1887 complete with a stunning courtyard, which reputedly has more than 50,000 plants. It was the colonial hotel par excellence and attracted such famous figures as Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham.
Despite recently being refurbished the place retains its colonial-style atmosphere with its very high ceilings, the whirring ceiling fans, exotoc Oriental carpets, wonderful period-style furnishings, its signature restaurants serving up fine cuisine and highly attentive hotel staff. Concessions to the modern era have been made...

Visiting friends in Singapore
Review of General: Singapore by
gard
Advantages: Shopping, food
Disadvantages: Hot, humid
...by the way and even when we tried to ask them what was wrong we just got the answer “it will get warmer”. In the end most people had put on all the clothes that they had brought along and it did get warmer eventual.
We landed at Changi aiport (http://www.changi.airport.com.sg/) at about 4 pm. This airport has a reputation for being one of the best airports in the world and I must say that I was impressed when I went to the toilet and I saw the toilet paper was folded just like it is folded in a bathroom in a hotel room. Singapore gave us a hot and humid welcome. It was about 26 degrees Celsius when we landed and it seemed like it had rained. I like the climate and it reminds me a lot of the trip to Thailand in 1998. Talking about Thailand. We flew right over the island of Koh Samui when we were flying to Singapore. We spent the night...

Making the most of a visit to Singapore
Review of General: Singapore by
sef
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
.... Excellent. (5)
Ø Raffles - A definite MUST despite the fact the Singapore slings are expensive. It’s what the ‘Singapore legend’ has been built upon (5)
Ø Bugis Street - Good for cheap goods and fake watches etc but need to watch it. Not a very pleasant area for girls alone. Need to watch personal belongings. (3)
Ø Day Trip to Malaysia - (Malacca) - A very long day with a lot of travelling time. Very good lunch at a hotel in Malacca then a visit to old Malacca town. Interesting but a little over rated. Probably better doing a shorter trip. (3)
Ø Zoological
Gardens - Consists of park and jungle with over 2,000 animals. The highlight is breakfast or tea with the Orang Utans, which is absolutely fantastic. Can spend a good morning there or even a day. (5)
Eating Out
Ø Eat out at Boat Quay – very pleasant...

New Otani, Singapore
Review of Hotel New Otani, Singapore by
zw987654123
Advantages: Location, Location, Location
Disadvantages: If you like shopping, could be closer to Orchard Road
...We stayed here for 3 nights on out way back from Australia. This is a great hotel for the price it was listed as a 3 star but in my opinion should be higher! Very clean, huge comfortable beds, large spacious marble bathroom with both walk in shower and bathtub, complimentary bathrobe and slippers for personal use during stay, and best of all an excellent view of the Singapore river.
The room had a computer, electric curtains, knobs and buttons on the bedside cabinet for various lighting effects that kept my husband amused for ages. There is an adjoining shopping complex below the hotel which is another plus point, as it has a Starbucks, supermarket, bookshop and even a beauty parlour. We had dinner in the hotel in the Restaurant next to the Lobby and found this to be both delicious and excellent value for money, the Seafood Laksa...
