Darkness isn't scary!

Advantages: Encourages children to like the dark

...I?ve seen this book at our local library for weeks and weeks and although each time I pick it up and intend to borrow it, for some reason I don?t actually go through with it. Well this wekk I bit the bullet and got it stamped for my precious boys to bring home. The book is written by Ella Burfoot and tells the story of Daisy a young girl who is wondering what to play. She decides to dance a little and while she twirls around the floor, darkness slips right into her room. Before long she is grabbing by the hand and dancing with it until they are both so tired that they go to sleep. The front cover of this book is what attracted me to it as it?s pitch black. As you turn the pages the next thing that becomes apparent is the fact that the ?darkness? is a young boy who is made of a shiny plastic which is smooth to the touch. I love...

Review of Darkness Slipped in - Ella Burfoot

A slip for the Zelda franchise.

Advantages: Graphics, some nice ideas, some audio.
Disadvantages: Gimmicky, bad gameplay, controls, story.

...(!) and essentially the best part of the game. It really does look like Wind Waker squeezed realistically into a tiny DS game cartridge. By far the best graphics on DS so far, beating other good lookers such as Final Fantasy III. Actually though, Mario Slam Basketball is good too. So, the first island - you've been washed up (on a side note, this part of the story does work since you feel new to the island and you have no burdens) and have to explore "Mercay" Island. And this really sets a high height to reach for the rest of the game - playing through this first island is inspiring stuff and makes you think the rest of the game is going to be officially awesome. But then it slips. It's hard to place but the novelty seems to wear off and the controls start to annoy you. And it's gimmicky really. The ability to write on the map is a nice prospect...

...Situated about midway up the West Coast of Australia, with a population of about 12000 people, Broome really is a paradise for travellers! The gateway to the Kimberley region and tropics of the north, the white sandy beaches, palm trees, coconuts and glorious sunshine makes this the perfect holiday spot. It is commonly known as slipping into "Broometime" - which means slipping into relaxation mode as this place is so laid back! The town was actually a lot smaller than I expected but that adds to its character as it still feels a bit untouched even though it is somewhat a mecca for tourists these days. Be warned that it can get expensive here as the local businesses thrive on the tourist dollar, especially in school holidays or public holidays. 2001: A Martian Odyssey

Advantages: Well-developed characterisation of descent into madness
Disadvantages: Rather slow-moving and not a little confusing; probably not for those new to PKD

...Having very much enjoyed the first two Philip K. Dick novels I read - which had coincidentally been his first two (Solar Lottery and The World Jones Made) - I jumped to a mid-career novel, Martian Time-Slip, due mainly to the fact I'd bought several while half-price on Amazon. The setting, obviously enough, is Mars, circa 2001. It's still a bleak, desolate planet, where water is precious and the few human settlers eke out something of a frontier existence, with luxuries from home only available on the black market. Incidentally, the planet is populated by a few surviving natives - little black men, known as Bleekmen, or sometimes niggers. There's an interesting suggestion that they share a common ancestor with humans, which sadly is never followed-up. The whole scene put me in mind of something rather like the Australian outback...

...In the last year or so, Simply has been overtaken by Dabs Direct (or Dabs.com as they are now called). The service is slipping, the website seriously needs upgrading and the prices aren't as competitive as they used to be. For example, if you search their website or go through the product categories trying to purchase an Intel Pentium III processor, the website will tell you that they don't sell them. The simply Update magazine will quite happily tell you that they do sell them, however. Simply just aren't keeping up with the times, they were content to rest on their laurels and win the PC Direct prizes year after year, but now Dabs will get them every year unless Simply get their backsides in gear. Simply are still fairly good value, and quite good in the customer services department, but not a scratch on Dabs....
