...?Across the Barricades? by Joan Lingard is about a Catholic boy and a Protestant girl in love during the Irish civil war in the 1970?s. Many complications occur with their families and relationship yet they are determined to stay together no matter what their friends or families say. In the opening paragraph the author grabs the readers attentions making them want to read on. The author does this by starting the novel with speech, ?Sadie. Sadie Jackson!? We don?t know who is speaking and where they are so we want to continue reading to find out. The author also keeps the reader wanting to read more by not giving out much information at the start of the book. This makes the reader want to find out who the different characters are and where about the novel is set. The author manages to bring the characters to life by setting...

Across the Barricades

Advantages: Learning about Irland -sometimes interesting
Disadvantages: Starts slow, rather boring.

...At school, we had to read this book, "Across the Barricades". I have to say, it's bad since I found it really boring (maybe since I was forced to read it). The story is about 2 kid's : Kevin and Sadie and their dangerous relationship in Belfast. The problem is : Kevin is Catholic and Sadie is Protestant. Even though this book is the second in Joan Lingard'series, you can either read the book which came before : "The Twelfth Day of July", or enjoy "Across the Barricades" on it's own. Other book's in Joan Lingard's Kevin and Sadie series are "Into Exile","A Proper Place" and "Hostages to Fortune". I wont be telling a summary of the story since, there would be no point in reading it otherwise. It's just a romantic *novel* and belongs to the romantic section of books. I myself did not like "Across the Barricades" and I suppose this...

Advantages: cheapest ADSL2+ router around; all-in-one solution

...I bought this router from Amazon just before Christmas, taking around six weeks to arrive. They said it would take one to two weeks to dispatch, and now I know why... INITIAL REACTION On arrival it was evident that the product was meant for another country, as the manual and instructions were in another (European) language. However, the basic manual (and nothing else) was available in English on an included CD. The package also came with an odd beige device that takes RJ-11 cables. The important thing, however, is how this thing works. HOW THIS THING WORKS The SMC7904BRA is a ADSL2+ broadband router and modem in one. ADSL2+ basically means it supports broadband connections faster than 2Mb - normal ADSL routers and modems can't go any faster. It's a four port router, which means, if you want to share a broadband connection...

Through the Barricades-Spandau Ballet

Advantages: Addictive, don't get bored of the songs.
Disadvantages: Why did they split up!!

...I bought this album because I am a big fan of Spandau Ballet and especially because it contained the song 'Through the Barricades'. This album was very nice to listen to and has some of Spandau Ballet's later songs. It has nine tracks and most were very good in my opinion. The songs are very original, with a good variety, the most well known is the classic 'Through the Barricades'. You will never get bored of listening to this album and I was reaching for it time and time again. Overall I thought this album was excellent, probably one of Spandau Ballet's best I would recommend this album to anyone who likes Spandau Ballet....

Review of SMC Barricade SMC7804WBRA - wireless router

No barriers to stop you enjoying this

Advantages: A refreshing simplicity to many songs, excellent performances throughout
Disadvantages: None to speak of

...Kasey Chambers is Australian yet writes and performs what would be classed in the United States as 'country rock' - something she's clearly rather good at. Another artist who appears to have slipped under most people's radar, her CD "Barricades And Brick Walls" would be a good introduction to this relatively unknown but very talented singer-songwriter. A couple of tracks from the album have made it onto UK radio (Bob Harris has featured "Not Pretty Enough" on his Saturday show, for instance - my introduction to Kasey Chambers), but for the most part she hasn't made much of an impact in the UK. Part of me wants her to remain obscure, keeping her music pure, simple and enjoyable, yet the rest of me thinks she deserves a bigger audience, one that will appreciate her writing and performing ability. Belkin routers in a nutshell

Advantages: Easy to set up
Disadvantages: Have to restart it when you boot up your computer with Windows XP, unreliable

...I have bought two of these routers and set up two networks around them. One of the things you notice when you open the package is a quick install leaflet, which is great, it usually means a quick and easy install that even a computer novice could do without trouble, and that is exactly what you get with this. The constant trouble I had with these routers is, when running a machine on Windows XP, I had to restart the router when I started the computer, otherwise the computer would not recognise it was on the network and therefore couldn't get through to the internet connection. Although this is just another button to press when starting your computer, it becomes frustrating because when you reset the router all the other computers on the network will lose the internet connection for around 30 seconds until it has completed. A Class Amp

Advantages: A handy combo for practice or small gigs.
Disadvantages: A little heavy to carry on your own, especially with a bass.

...About a year and a half ago I decided that the 20W Kustom Bass Combo that I had been playing through was not doing me justice. It was losing the tone of my sound, and was just not loud enough to support a Big Band, which I was playing in at the time. So, I decided to get myself a bigger combo. I chose the 712SMC over the competitors, some of which offered similar power for much less money, because I liked the sound of the amp. This sound is given by the SMC amplifier, also available as a head. The amp has a variable, flexible sound. The compressor is useful, but not as handy as the 7-band eq, with a preset shape. This amp is fine for small gigs and rehearsals, but obviously, it's not as powerful as a stack. It does have a direct inject, which is useful for studio work. But it is a pain to transport. I've bought a little trolley to get it...
