...The Works is a discount bookstore which can be found on many high streets. I have browsed around a fair few discount bookstores, but have always found this store to be the best in it?s class. Overall, I tend to find that a lot of discount bookstores sell a lot of uninteresting titles, & books you?ve never heard of. The Works does also fall into this category, but seems to also sell more bestsellers than other stores (often current ones at that), covering a wide range of authors. Books are laid out according to genre & are for the most part stacked on shelves with the cover facing forwards, so that you can see at a glance what titles are in stock. The more popular fiction & bestsellers are laid out on tables at the front of the store, with reference books & childrens books being on shelves running down the sides & back of the store...

Review of The Works
Advantages: Cheap, random selection Disadvantages: Random selection, rather hit and miss
...Student life requires budgeting, which often involves purchasing daily essentials in cheap pound shops or from chains like Morisons, Wilkinsons and the like. Unfortunately Oxford does not have many of these, The Works is about the only cheap shop there is ? though there are two or three of these (on in the Westgate Centre next to Sainsburys, one on Cornmarket Street and maybe one on the High Street). I don?t know how many branches there are nation wide; but I know there?s also a branch in Colchester, which is much the same.
What do they sell?
The Works is primarily a cheap book shop, but also sells stationery, art equipment and other bits and pieces from time to time. The books tend to be slightly obscure, but are often going cheap. There seem to be a lot of biographies of D-list celebrities, for example Ulrika?s Johnson?s ?Honest...

Review of The Works
Advantages: Cheap books Disadvantages: Can rarely find what you're looking for

~ English ~
The Works has shown a reasonable understanding of the English language during the term with her area of special interest being books on a variety of subjects including sport, local history, art and design, gardening and health.
Unfortunately, she hasn?t shows a great deal of interest in classic literature although she can surprise on occasion with the unusual choices she makes.
Perhaps a little too keen on celebrity biographies and would therefore benefit from developing a broader variety of available subjects to enable her to hold their own amongst...

Review of The Works
...This review is on that good old British shop, known only to those of us who for some reason admit to going in there as The Works. It is one of those shops that you just like to either love and/ or hate, but sadly I hate it.
The Works is one of those shops that sells off all the old 'rejects' from other places, and they stock everything from books to music to craft things. They sell everything at stupidly low prices, just really for the simple reason that no-one will buy them otherwise. Take foro example an encyclopaedia of the Royal Family that would normally retail at Ł20 or more in one shop, but take it and put it in the works - and you are looking at probably Ł3 or Ł4 for exactly the same thing.
Although everything is placed in to different categories within the shop to make it supposedly easier for you to find what it is that...

Review of The Works
Advantages: Interesting and well thought out story Disadvantages: A bit dated and lacked depth in descriptions of characters
...Background:
I have had this book on one of my many bookshelves for a few years and for one reason or another never got round to reading it. That sounds very grand I suppose but it?s not I love reading and have lots of bookshelves but not much else!! So as a wet and cold weekend was forecasted the other week I decided to give it a crack, so with several cups of coffee and a cuddly blanket and set myself the task of doing just that.
About the author:
Graham Ison is a well-respected crime novelist, having written 27 books to date. He began his career as a Soldier before spending the next 30 years in Scotland Yard?s Special Branch, working in a variety of different roles. These days he is a full time author as well as being an after dinner speaker and occasional obituaries writer for the Daily Telegraph.
Synopsis...
Advantages: Lot of books to buy Disadvantages: Lot of books to buy. Can get expensive!
...The Works. This is one of my favourite bookshops, as you are almost always sure of a bargain. Although every branch of The Works should be the same (and they all follow the same basic design, bearing in mind restrictions resulting from shape and size of premises, etc., all branches seem slightly different.
For example, the branch in New Street, Birmingham , is different from the branch in over New Street Station, which is different again from the branch in Shrewsbury, which, in turn, is different from the branch in Telford.
The idea behind The Works is a simple one Publishers think that new books only have a very limited shelf life. To this end they sell books on a sale or return basis. New books that are not sold through ordinary bookshops are sold through publisher's remainders bookshops such as The Works.

Review of The Works
Advantages: Good Variety,Great offers Disadvantages: Not always the best quality
...The Works is a very nice, cheap and with great variety of books shop. I have been in several around Britain. I liked the one in Newport S. Wales but I?m shopping mainly from the one in Preston or the one in Chorley, Lancashire.
The layout and the presentation of the shops are almost the same wherever I have been. They differ only in size and quantity.
Why To Go There.
You can go there if you want buy books really cheap. That?s a great reason to visit a shop isn?t it?
What Books You Can Find
Children Books
The children section is usually the first near the door for obvious reasons. The book that I noticed from that section was an amazing Face Painting book. You can have really good fun with the kids. On offer for only Ł2. I almost bought it even though I don?t have children.
COOKERY BOOKS
One of the big sections is...

Review of The Works
Advantages: Great suspense thriller Disadvantages: Little obvious, no epilogue at all.
...Background:
I have read several novels written by Margaret Yorke over the past few years and enjoyed her style of writing. This is her 42nd book. Yorke is a respected and highly popular English writer. In 1999 she received the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger Award for her outstanding contribution to literature.
I was looking for a book that I would find easy to read and difficult to put down. I'm glad to say in this book I found it.
The storyline:
Alan Parker has been made redundant from Briggs and Company (an engineering company) having worked there for 25 years. Alan now 50 years old, finds it impossible to tell his busy wife Daphne. So he maintains the pretence of going to work every morning and arriving home at the same time, so as not to upset or alarm her. In the meantime he is busy filling in job application forms...
Advantages: Brilliant Disadvantages: Lack of DVD extras, but the film itself is excellent
...Harrison Ford seems to have a knack of getting the good roles. In Working Girl, he works with Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver to give us director Mike Nichols' 1988 film telling a story about office work in the 1980s.
Essentially, the film doesn't have a special plot. It tells of Tess McGill (Griffith), a clever secretary who lands a job working for Katharine Parker at Trask Industries. When Katharine breaks her leg and Tess finds out she was going to steal one of her ideas, she decides to get her own back by pretending to be her own boss. The sparks fly as professional backstabbing ensues left, right and centre. Cue Hollywood cheese..............
Ford kind of takes a back seat in this film and lets Griffith and Weaver dominate the proceedings, and this is the right move. The script nails it with the spoft spoken Tess...
Advantages: Less stress, more modern approach Disadvantages: Not all jobs can be flexible
...No this isn't going to be about Mars Bars (remember their old ad line?!)
It's a bit ironic me choosing to write about this topic at the moment actually given that I have been unable to work for about two and half years now due to illness/disability but prior to that I had worked full time all my adult life so far so I think that gives me some perspective on both sides.
I think it is well known and charted that generally in the UK we work the longest hours within Europe together with fewer holidays and less public/National holidays too. There is also apparently a high record of sick absence due to work related stress and industrial accidents. Of course on the other side of the coin if you look to far Eastern countries they often work even longer hours but that is not the point in hand.
Many people will confess to being...
