...I am sure we all know that smoke alarms for the home are a great idea but unless you live in a new home and have one wired in then you need to remember to replace the batteries regularly. My smoke alarms are now quite elderly (20 years+) so I started looking at the options. I discovered that there are more than just one type of smoke alarm. There are two basic systems according to the Fire Service: ?Ionisation: These are the cheapest and cost very little to purchase. They are very sensitive to small particles of smoke produced by flaming fires, such as chip pans, and will detect this type of fire before the smoke gets too thick. Smoke alarm and pendant light in one - fantastic

Advantages: Barely noticeable looks, no batteries to change, illuminates lights to help escape
Disadvantages: May suddenly turn the bedroom light on at 2am if there's a power cut

The Housesafe smoke alarm replaces the normal pendant light rose on the ceiling and the smoke alarm and sensors are concealed in the base. The kidde smoke alarm is designed to detect combustion using the ionisation technique. It contains 0.9 microcurie of Americium 241, which apparently is a radioactive material. The smoke alarm uses an extremely small amount of radioactive element in the ionisation chamber. In the manual that you receive with the detector, it explains fairly easily how to set the detector up along with where you should locate it. - You should locate the first alarm (as it is recommended that you buy more than one) in the immediate area...

...It's an alarming thought that someone dies every day due to the fact they never had a smoke alarm fitted. Another reason for this is the removal of the devices' battery, or indeed a flat battery. It is to this end that our local council comes round a check on a regular basis. If you do have a smoke alarm fitted and it tends to beep now and then, this could be an indication the battery needs replaced. Most fires start at night and if you do not have an alarm fitted your chances of survival are virtually Zero. Fire is not the main killer in accidents like this. If you have no alarm and are asleep, it's the smoke that's going to get you first. Not a nice way to go, but you can give yourself a fighting chance if you BUY A SMOKE ALARM. We have two smoke alarms in our house, and there are many occasions when I felt like breaking them...

...OK, This review is on smoke alarms, this is the point where you stop reading, there is nothing interesting in these reviews, and something automatically stops you reading. Someone's kids will die this Christmas, makes you think doesn't it? These ones by Aico, The company sounds Japanese, but actually they are from Shropshire. These alarms have all the advantages of a battery model, but are mains powered. These are also known as Hard wired smoke detectors. They are also fitted with a lithium battery as a back up, and this trickle charges from the mains, so you will never have to replace it. There are different types of detector, these are of the ionisation variety, but that does not concern us. Just accept that they are suited for fast flaming fires, and that the vast majority of smoke alarms in the home are of this type...

...We purchased our Wicks wire free alarm when we moved into our new house three years ago, having been burgaled two years previously at our former address i needed something to give me piece of mind having two young children in the house (i became a bit of a basket case for a while after, and have developed ocd since!!) The alarm came with a keypad that has to be near a plug socket and plugged in at all times, although there is a solar battery in the outside box in case of power cuts. You also get as part of the basic package two room sensors that if placed in the correct part of the room ie, the corner, scans 180 degrees round the room to detect movement.
