...I am sure we all know that smoke alarms for the home are a great idea but unless you live in a new home and have one wired in then you need to remember to replace the batteries regularly. My smoke alarms are now quite elderly (20 years+) so I started looking at the options. I discovered that there are more than just one type of smoke alarm. There are two basic systems according to the Fire Service: ?Ionisation: These are the cheapest and cost very little to purchase. They are very sensitive to small particles of smoke produced by flaming fires, such as chip pans, and will detect this type of fire before the smoke gets too thick. Smoking is good for you

Advantages: Subtly involving, understated but very rewarding
Disadvantages: It is slow paced so don't expect thrills and spills

.... Paul Auster has commented that he wanted to show how people use talking to create ?smoke? screen in the film that never quite allows you to know the reality of that person. Only in time as the film progresses do we see how some but not all of the various characters begin to reveal themselves. At the very end of the film we are told about ?Auggie Wren's Christmas Story? a story that Auggie tells to Paul Benjamin, which was actually written by Paul Auster in real life for The New York Times in 1990 and from which the idea for the film was developed. The story is a heart-warming tale with a darker hedge and is beautifully delivered by Keitel, but at the end Paul Benjamin is left wandering as are the audience whether this is a true story or just another example of a smoke screen. Smoke alarm and pendant light in one - fantastic

Advantages: Barely noticeable looks, no batteries to change, illuminates lights to help escape
Disadvantages: May suddenly turn the bedroom light on at 2am if there's a power cut

...This is an excellent solution to having unsightly smoke alarms on the ceiling. The Housesafe smoke alarm replaces the normal pendant light rose on the ceiling and the smoke alarm and sensors are concealed in the base. It is wired into the mains like a normal pendant light would be and once smoke has been detected, the siren activates and automatically illuminates the pendant light to provide an illuminated escape route. In the event of a mains power failure, the alarm is still operational via a rechargeable battery contained within it and it contains a power monitoring supply system to ensure 100% effectiveness. The area of power failures is, I think, it's only downfall. If say, you have one of these in your bedroom and there's a power failure at 3am, the alarm will switch to battery power and automatically turn the bedroom...

A Smoking gun fires no blanks

...Thank You For Smoking is an acerbic, witty and sometimes shocking look the way American politics works. It will have you laughing uproariously, mainly at the things said by the lead character Nick Naylor, (Aaron Eckhart, Paycheck) in the defence of smoking. See he is a lobbyist for the tobacco concerns and it is his job to defend cigarettes and to make sure people carry on smoking by telling them of all the good points! Right from the very start Thank You shows a stylish touch, the opening credits being based around cigarette packs and logos with the cast and crew names in place of the brand names. I like to see some originality in credits and this certainly stood out enough to make me sit up and actually watch these credits properly. Thank You is based on the novel by Chris Buckland and manages to be both scary and funny...

...I know that this review is not quite in the right section, but it is actually based on the fact that the smoking ban has now been in force for around 6 months and how I feel it has affected pubs. I am personally not a smoker myself, but I do however think that it is wrong to possibly take away somebody's rights like this. A good friend of mine owns a pub in the heart of student land in Plymouth, although it is not just students that give him business (in fact it is about two thirds locals against 1 thord students for a lot of the time but that is neither here nor there).
