Snatch, the follow-up to the Guy Ritchie's breakthrough film--the high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking...... more
Snatch, the follow-up to the Guy Ritchie's breakthrough film--the high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels--hardly breaks new ground being, well, another high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie. Okay, so there are some differences. This time around our low-rent hoodlums are battling over dodgy fights and stolen diamonds rather than dodgy card games and stolen drugs. There has been some minor reshuffling of the cast too with Sting and Dexter Fletcher making way for the more bankable Benicio Del Toro and Brad Pitt, the latter pretty much stealing the whole shebang as an incomprehensible Irish gypsy. Moreover, no one can complain about the amount of extras featured on this DVD that includes 15 minutes of deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, trailer, storyboards, production notes and commentary from Ritchie himself. And, sure, people who really, really liked Lock, Stock--or have the memory of a goldfish--will really, really like this. The suspicion lingers, however, that if the director doesn't do something very different next time around then his career may prove to be considerably shorter than that of 'er indoors. --Clark Collis ... less

Director Guy Ritchie has that Tarantino instinct for song intros that immediately arrest the attention. The best example is the Stranglers' classic "Golden Brown", which never gets further than its opening 30 seconds in the movie; ditto "Ghost Town" from the Specials. The album opens with the tour-de-force instrumental of Klint's "Diamond", which builds from the one instinct into his other for sustained rhythms. It's a cracking beginning as things move into triple speed with Overseer's "Supermoves". Following them up is a pretty eclectic bag of allsorts, but like the film itself, it all just about hangs together. There is reggae from 10cc with "Dreadlock Holiday", saucy soul from Bobby Byrd's "Hot Pants (I'm Coming, Coming, I'm Coming)", and oh look there's Madonna! Ritchie obviously considers their relationship his "Lucky Star". A little star power never hurts of course, and that is also provided by Massive Attack getting all Doors-like for "Angel", and Oasis "F**kin' in the Bushes". In the liberally sprinkled dialogue cuts, Alan ("Bricktop") Ford is as frightening on record as on film. It isn't quite Ritchie's Pulp Fiction, but all the hallmarks are certainly here. --Paul Tonks ... less

Snatch this
Advantages: Good plot and nice set of extras.
Disadvantages: Could have had some music videos
...If you want a good British gangster movie, then there is no better place to turn these days than to Guy Ritchie. The guy who became next in line to marry Madonna has created a sequel to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in all but name, and it doesn't suffer for it either.
With a bigger budget, and bigger stars too, Snatch is much more the Hollywood movie than the first, but at the same time it retains it's air of Britishness. Richie should be given a pat on the back for keeping Snatch true to its British surroundings, without selling out to the American cinema goers (with the sole exception of casting Brad Pitt, although he does do a pretty good Irish impersonation to be honest!)
THE PLOT
The plot is similar in style and content to Lock, Stock... but it has a certain flair of it's own and stands out as a fantastic movie...

no 'snatch' jokes here
Advantages: good extras, amusing film, some good easter eggs
Disadvantages: all extras are once only views
...The film Snatch is a reasonably entertaining film that treads all the same ground as Lock Stock but with a bigger budget. There's some good laughs and a few good action scenes. Not fantastic but certainly better than the rest of the british ganster dross that we've seen in recent months.
The Snatch dvd is a good package that stretches two dvd's and contains some neat extras.
The first dvd contains the film in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. For a recent film the transfer is as you'd expect. Very clean and pretty much perfect. Sound wise it's presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 which is very lively when guns or action is involved. The menus on both dvd's are animated and scored and are quite cool.
Extras wise there is a Director/Producer commentary from Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn. On the whole this is a Ritchie dominated audio...

snatch away the critics
Advantages: great storyline and film
Disadvantages: nothing
...I’m going to start off this opinion with a little story. Two years ago, in the summer of 1999, I was tipped off on the fanatical Internet DVD forums that a little known film was going to be released on DVD and that it was available online for the insane price of ten bucks. This was before bargain pricing for DVDs was widespread and, combined with one of those seemingly always available coupons, the title could be had for a smooth five dollars.
That DVD was "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," a hilarious and violent black comedy about hapless criminals plying their craft on the seedy side of London -- a movie that I likely never would have seen if not for my inability to pass up a deal.
Now here we are two years later and "Snatch," the follow-up film by director Guy Ritchie, has just been released as a full-blow...
