Advantages: It works...but
Disadvantages: Little more to pay+does it work?

...Right my first review so bear with me. Ok firstly i have bought a new car wich exceeds limits swiftly,but i dont condone speeding. Secondly i paid £2k to make it faster,(ditto above) Hence buying a SNOOPER S4,for which i paid £279 + £100 for the additional radar detector. First up,to actually make this thing work you need to register online because it wont work otherwise(security so say) to register it costs!!!!!! Now i paid about a hundred quid for 3yrs which includes updates for that period.So you have to be online(or do a lenghty phone session). The downloading and updating is very simple and please dont be put off by this. Once this is done its a real doddle,just plug in to your cigar lighter and go. Does it work?   BIG BROTHER REALLY IS WATCHING YOU!

Advantages: Gives voice alerts rather than bleeping, shuts up if you are driving below the speed limit, tells you the reported speed of the road, records and monitors your speed limit, you can record your own high risk zones
Disadvantages: Database is not up to date, laser detect is questionable

  Good Detection Device but still not a 'Failsafe'

Advantages: Informative and Accurate enough to protect you most of the time
Disadvantages: "most of the time" is not as good as "all of the time"

...that can be found sometimes from both perspectives/arguements. The question is what is there available, for the 'most of the time' responsible motorist who may occasionally absent-mindedly go over the speed limit, to protect them from suddenly unwittingly getting 'flashed' etc when they might be doing 5 miles an hour over a speed limit whilst daydreaming a little. Short of being fuelled with paranoia and/or 'Pro-Plus' 24/7 (neither of which I understand are healthy options over prolonged periods time!) ... how about considering another alternative that might well (IF you are at heart a responsible driver!!!!) save your licence, potentially save lives, and help keep you on the straight and narrow???? ...Ok it depends how much you want to spend. It really is as simple as that. If you've got the money to spend then you may be better off with one of the newer gps units (snooper s4/road angel/snooper s6/etc but don't forget they need monthly or yearly charges). This is a one off payment available for about £180 off the shelf in some shops. They are so easy to fit and use. All you do is plug it into the cigar lighter then either use the supplied window or dash fix and away you go. Now the way the units work is on radar scatter - so if your following a car that goes through a gatso (or other radar emmitting camera) it will cause the radar single to "bounce off" and that is what you pick up. Disadvantages: Doesnt detect mobile cameras or hand held radar.

...snooper, this enables you to download updates of the speed camera locations. If you do not want to pay the price they are wanting then it is pretty much useless. It will also detect laser guns that the police use and warn you by emitting a deafening sound to alert you to their presence - even if you are travelling at the speed limit. There is some debate to whether this is effective as some say when they have targeted you car with a laser gun they already know what speed you are doing so if you slow down as a reaction to the alert they still know what speed you were doing. Though some say that if the police are targeting a car in front with a laser gun the snooper will be able to detect "scatter" and therefore warn you before they target your car. Epson EMP S4, one small, great projector

Advantages: Portable, quick to turn on/off, very easy to set up and use.
Disadvantages: Loud cooling system, rubbish internal speaker.

...Having received 2 fixed penalties for speeding in 1 month, at speeds not significantly over the limit, nor at anything like some drivers you see flying past you (but that's a different story!), I decided to buy a radar detector. The models available differ vastly in price, ranging from about £100 upto £600, with the major differences being the detection range and frequencies covered. The cheaper models only cover 4 bands, missing out the new mini-gatso cameras, so I opted for the Snooper SD815is, giving 5 band detection and good range, upto 2 miles for radar and laser guns, 600 yards for the mini gatsos and 100 yards for gatso cameras.
