Cinderella re-imagined - is a modern musical fable with a story centered around the complicated love life of prospective Mayoral candidate James Prince, his fiancée and his law-student lover, Robbie - who`s paying his college bills in a somewhat unorthodox way. Philip Glass: Early Voice - Philip Glass

These live recordings of vocal works by Philip Glass may not feature the Glass Ensemble, but Early Voice can boast the presence of Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman, both of them close collaborators with the composer. Glass himself can be heard giving clap-signals during Music For Voices, a 13-minute piece performed by Mabou Mines, the theatre company of which Glass was once the musical director. This 1972 version was taped at the Paula Cooper Gallery, the first to open on New York's SoHo loft scene. Drones hang in mid-air, gradually picking up rhythmic motion as they accumulate speed and density for this intensifying ritual. The sound quality is a touch thin, as is that of Another Look at Harmony, Part 4, even though this 50-minute piece was recorded in 1989. Written during the early-1970s, it heralds the harmonic concerns of Einstein on the Beach. This time The Western Wind performs the vocal parts, inflated with the drama of a Hollywood biblical epic, driven hard by Riesman's needling electric organ. His deep bass notes are unleashed after 10 minutes, then there's a midway pulling back of the voices before the entrance of the final run's classic Glass riff. Viewed behind the mountain of "official" Glass product available on the Nonesuch label, this one is for completists only, offering a valuable document of a scene that now seems strangely nostalgic. --Martin Longley ... less

It's 1947 in the austerity-ridden, black-market-riddled underworld of post-war Britain. And Jethro, a renowned Cockney cat burglar and jewel thief, sets up a caper to burgle the embassy of a certain unnamed Iron Curtain country. His prize, two fabulous suites of jewelry reputed to have once been the property of Russian aristocracy. The thing is, since the end of the War - with him having served in the Merchant Navy and having had a couple of convoy ships sunk from beneath him - Jethro has told everyone that he's lost his nerve and has gone straight. And he takes-up as an itinerant stagehand around London's many theatres and music halls. But the truth is hiding in plain sight in and around London's West End is the perfect cover for him to set up his diamond capers in the wealthy areas of Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge. Jethro is a born mimic and a 'master of disguise' who will adopt whatever accent or character he needs to pass 'unseen' in a society that's obsessed with class. (He's able to go up and down the social ladder with as much dexterity as he does the outside of a house.) And if he doesn't have the necessary gear at his own secret lock-up, he'll complete his disguise by raiding a theatre's prop and wardrobe cupboards, and steal the words and mannerisms from the actors he's seen on stage or at the pictures. (John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward, James Mason are all grist for the mill.) None of London's top villains - Jack Spot and Billy Hill - believe Jethro has gone straight, and neither does Darby Messima, Soho's fearsome crime-lord. And at one time or another everyone wants him to do just one more little creeping job for them. But when Jethro turns down Messima's right-hand man, who wants Jethro to secretly 'moonlight' for him, things turn very nasty indeed and Jethro is only saved from being 'chived' and crippled for life by the chance intervention of a stranger, Seth. ... less

Londra, 1937. ... less

Mrs Henderson Presents [DVD]
The blitz-bombing of London in World War II provides the serious backdrop for the uplifting entertainment of Mrs. Henderson Presents, a delightful comedy...... more
The blitz-bombing of London in World War II provides the serious backdrop for the uplifting entertainment of Mrs. Henderson Presents, a delightful comedy anchored by the flawless performances of Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. After losing a son in World War I, and becoming a widow in 1937, the wealthy and respectable Mrs. Henderson (Dench) decides that the best way to support soldiers going off to battle is to give them a wartime send-off they'll never forget. Thus, she buys and renovates the Windmill Theatre in London's Soho district, hires Mr. Vivian Van Damm (Hoskins) as the impresario of an all-day musical variety show called "Revudeville," and secures permission from the censorious Lord Cromer (Christopher Guest) to include naked women in the stage show--on the condition that the ladies remain still onstage to qualify as "art," like nude portraits in a gallery, with the "foliage" of their "midlands" discreetly obscured. "Revudeville" is an instant hit, British propriety remains tastefully intact, and as The Windmill's fortunes rise, fall, and rise again, Mrs. Henderson Presents develops an emotional depth and good-natured nobility that's perfectly matched to the comedy of tweaking British manners. Working from an eloquently witty, fact-based screenplay by Martin Sherman, director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) brings out the best in a well-chosen cast, and Andrew Dunn's cinematography (enhanced by judicious use of digital effects to show the London blitz in progress) casts a warm, inviting glow over this winning tale of show-biz tenacity in the best and worst of times. --Jeff Shannon ... less

Theatre
Advantages: Good productions
Disadvantages: not the prettiest...
...The Peoples Theatre
I was recently at the theatre with Little Miss and grandson to see the Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
WHERE IS IT?
The theatre is situated on the Coast Road, which is n the way to Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. There are several bus services available but the nearest Metro stations, Jesmond and Chillingham Road, are more than a mile away...

So So Soho Atones With Sympathetic Service
Advantages: Everyone elses food was great
Disadvantages: My main dish was terrible
...towards my problem. I would say then, that I recommend this place on the basis of the excellent meal I had there last year. One off bad meals can happen everywhere, and I am fairly confident that this was just a blip. Put it this way, it wouldn't stop me going back again, provided they don't read this and take umbrage!
