The Day The Sony E reader Changed My Life

Advantages: It is very useful and very simple to use and it looks and feels fantastic
Disadvantages: The screen isn't backlit, and the zoom only has three sizes

...I love the Sony E reader because since I found this gadget it has made life sitting on a bay for hours on end whle Im in my Lorry a pleasure and no longer a chore. I love the idea of the e reader by Sony, hundreds of books all in one place and all available with the push of a button. I have books all over the cab and they always get filthy and dog eared. I always lose my page when I have to put them down because the red light on the bay changes to green and they want their bay back. Another thing with a paper book is that if you take it into a waiting room , every one can see what your reading ( well the ones who can read anyway) and I'm a little shy about sharing my reading habits especially when I'm picking up the free books in the waiting room at Blacks In Northampton, ( at least I hope theyr'e free). Sony Vaio N505X - Pleasantly Surprised!

Advantages: Ultra-portable, Magnesium alloy casing, Runs XP no problem!, cost just £90!
Disadvantages: Battery life is about 1 hour, Low spec by today's standards

...I'm a big fan of electrical gadgets and was browsing ebay when I came across a Sony Vaio N505X Ultra-Portable notebook going cheap - I paid just £90 for mine which was in pristine condition and included the official Vaio external CD-Rom drive, external floppy drive, port replicator, power supply, upgraded to 128MB of ram and upgraded 30GB hard drive. I already have a perfectly adequate desktop computer but thought it would be nice to make more use of my wireless router. I personally think that the majority of laptops are rather bulky, the N505X, however, is one of the smallest laptops I have ever seen - its only 22mm thick and weighs around 1Kg! This product first hit the shelves about 8 years ago and even now in 2007 it doesn't look all that dated due to its size and clever styling with the large Vaio logo embossed on the lid...

Disadvantages: You will be interrupted from reading to answer a lot of questions!

I will agree that for all the bookmarking capabilities in the world some books, namely textbooks, are much better accessed in print where you can flip backwards and forwards as you like. However, for fiction the Reader is absolutely perfect, and this is coming from a tough critic as I like books, a lot. So how easy is it to get a book once you have the Reader? Well, mine came with a CD of 100 classics for starters, although these and many other out-of-copyright books can be downloaded easily for free at Project Gutenberg and other websites. You can also use Sony's own store, or Waterstones, or, like me, you can cheat and get books for free. Yep, I have easily already obtained enough books...

An absolute must for going on holiday.

Advantages: Looks good, small, lightweight, good capacity, easy to use.
Disadvantages: Time it takes to charge from a computer.

...I have just returned from a cruise holiday to the Venice. Normally I would take 5 books with me as I tend to read one every 3 or 4 days. It's either that or rely on the on-board library. This time, however, I had with me my Sony PRS-505 which I had loaded with James Patterson, Ian Rankine and Patricia Cornwell books (64 in all). One of the main problems during the cruise was having to stop reading on a fairly regular basis to answer questions about the reader. Even the waiters serving drinks would stop and have a chat about it. It was a complete success from every aspect and helped my wife and I to make new friends (although I doubt if Sony will include that in their marketing. ...It was my husband, a huge fan of both literature and technology that first made me aware of the e-book and in particular of the Sony Reader. Unlike me, he tends to think hard about his purchases in advance and so there were many conversations (well not really conversations as that would assume my participation) around the virtues of this product before he actually decided to take the plunge and get one. I am by no means a prolific reader and my literary tastes are not as high brow as his, but I do appreciate books. I like to see books lined up on a shelf and I am fascinated by old books in museums, so a book reader just seemed, well wrong, to me. But despite my feelings on this and my rather large hints connected to a certain necklace from Tiffany's, it was a book reader that I found myself unwrapping on Christmas Day last year...
