This independent Hahnel HS- A350 Infra Battery Grip fits the Sony Alpha A200, A300 and A350 digital SLR cameras (but not other models). The grip screws into the camera's tripod socket, adding around 45mm (1.75 inches) of height. This makes the camera easier to handle for many people, especially those with larger hands who find modern cameras "too small". This can help with steadiness, too, especially with larger telephoto or zoom lenses, reducing camera shake. A shaped grip and extra shutter release button make vertical (portrait) mode shooting easier. The grip accepts either one or two Sony NP-FM500H Lithium Ion batteries (as used in the camera alone) or independent alternatives (batteries are not included). Using two batteries increases the total power available, and can last for up to twice as many shots per set (depending on battery type, temperature and flash usage). A switch is provided to change between the two batteries. This grip is nicely made yet lightweight, and weighs under 200g without batteries. It mounts securely in position on the camera, the camera's battery cover is removed before fitting, and a compartment is provided on the grip to store it safely. A standard 1/4-inch socket is provided on the base to allow the camera to be mounted on a tripod or other support without removing the grip. A connection point is provided for attaching a strap (not included). The remote control unit supplied means you can release the shutter from a distance, when aimed at the remote receiver on the front of the camera. It's a real help for macro and extreme telephoto use on a tripod, as it prevents vibration being transmitted to the camera. Advantages: price, quality, range
Disadvantages: not full frame
...of lenses available for the 550 which include Sony & Minolta brands as Sony rebranded Minolta you can pick up plenty of reasonably priced 2nd user A-mount minolta lenses for this camera. Sony have a full list of their suitable lenses & uses on their website.
The 18-55mm lens is a good lens for shots that can be taken at relatively close range but struggles when it comes to shots 25+ metres away...
