Chokes in low light, Sony CyberShot DSC-S950

Advantages: user friendly, good picture quality, smart looks
Disadvantages: bad focus, problems while shooting in low light

...To be honest I am basically a Sony sound system fanatic simply because I am a person to whom music means a lot, but it is also true I have an inherent weakness for the sony brand name itself. Although I am not a professional photographer but photography does interest me a lot and on top of that there are friends who are professionals in this field. I came across Sony Cybershot DSC-S950 through one of my friends, what attracted me was its silvery looks (not that it is available in silver only, pink and black variations are also available) and since it was there with him I borrowed it in order to try it out for a while. The slick looks impressed me a lot. Over all the quality seemed to me to be quite okay. I got excellent results shooting out doors with rapid shutter speed in IS ISO100 mode, in fact the 4x zoom did not hinder the picture...

Advantages: Sony Quality, Carl Zeiss lens, 12x optical zoom, BIG screen!
Disadvantages: Battery life, large if you're used to compacts,

First impressions of the Sony H5 will impress on you the physical size of the machine compared to the small and light compacts you and I may have been used to. The wonderful 3" lcd screen dominates the back of the camera making framing and reviewing of shots a pleasure on the eyes, the image is super clear and accurate. It took me a while to suss out all the controls and settings as I'd been used to the Canon's control system but once mastered you'll find it quick and easy to capture the perfect shot. ...PC Sony recommends that the included "Cyber-shot Viewer" Software supplied be installed onto your PC. This will enable you to view pictures on the camera and provided some limited editing feature. I didn't bother. I was quite happy to connect it to my PC using the included USB lead and let Windows do all the work. If you are, like me, running Windows XP the system immediately picks up the connection of a new device, recognises it as a Sony W100 and then prompts what you want to do with it, view files, copy files etc. As I am quite comfortable using Windows Explorer, I viewed the files. Point and shoot the Sony way!

Advantages: Great features, good image quality and all at a great price.
Disadvantages: Only a couple (see review)!

...The last camera review I wrote was on the fantastic Sony A700 DSLR and at the time I mentioned that Sony are still very new in the DSLR market, they are however very well established in the point and shoot market and the camera I am reviewing today (the Cyber-shot DSC-W220) is the latest in their fabulous Cyber-shot W range. It comes in the usual range of colours (silver, black, blue and red, with a pink version no doubt on the way soon). It was only released in March so it is still relatively new on the market but the price has come down fairly quickly, having been released at over £200 you can now pick one up for around the £140 mark. ...really impressed me is the ISO high sensitivity setting. On my old camera any images I took in the twilight hours were extremelly dark and were unsalvagable, but with the sony cybershot I no longer have this problem! The ISO setting uses any light it can detect to enhance the resultant image. Excellant for those evening shots of the scenary on holiday to make all your friends jealous! The user menus on this camera are really easy to use and even offer a slideshow of the images on the memory to music!! A rechargable battery comes as standard with this camera and can be recharged via the charger supplied which gives youplenty of charge to go snapping all day long! Capture the perfct shot, with Sony Cyber-shot.

Advantages: Great zoom, and clear pictures.
Disadvantages: Quite highly priced, and not likely to be returned to you if you loose it.

...optical zoom you can capture subjects from the distance, I didn't truly appreciate this until I'd lost this camea, and bought the Nixon Coolpix, of wich i would not recommend to anyone, it is significantly cheaper, but this shows in the quality of the pictures, the nikon coolpix s slim, and extremely lightweight, (Sony cyber-shot is neither, weighing 135g) but the Nikon's zoom, lacks any greatness. The sony cyber-shot is a great first hand camera, with easy to use features and simple, clear instructions. The buttons are clearly marked with what they are for, and overall this is a great camera, of which I was gutted to loose, and would love to have again....
