Sony Mavica CD500

Advantages: Excellent macro, good photo in all lighting conditions
Disadvantages: Bulky (by today's standards), expensive to buy

...I've owned this camera for about four years. I bought it after reviewing other cameras in the same price bracket and although the first company I tried to buy it from told me it would be too heavy for a woman (it weighs about 1.5 lbs) I was going from a non-digital SLR that was much heavier. I have never regretted my decision to buy it. The functions are easy to understand and the convenient storage on a CD-RW makes transfer to the computer very straightforward. The macro function is excellent and taking a very close photo of flower is a piece of cake. The results are truly professional. It will take a good photo in all light conditions with or without the flash and for really dark situations it has a projected light grid that shows where the centre of the screen is. I would thoroughly recommend it....

Sony Alpha A200 (Digital SLR)

Advantages: Price, brand, quality
Disadvantages: Manual modes

...camera is compatible with the old Minolta lenses - which are cheaper and often better that the Sony ones (for more advanced photos). The manual settings are easy to use, however are a little rigid, and I find do not give you the same flexibility as some of the more expensive digital SLRs or manual ones (Cannon ones are very good for this), however for the price of the Sony, the settings are reasonable. Down to the most important point - image quality. I cannot really find fault with this at all, and this is comparable to some of the much more expensive Canon and Pentax SLRs! The lens provided with this camera is not the best for very close up and macro photography, however it tends to perform very well for any other shots - and there is always the option to change to a better lens for these purposes. Mavica Magic!

Advantages: Built to last forever, 10x optical zoom lens
Disadvantages: Hard to see LCD display in sunlight

...I bought my Mavica FD75 around 2 years ago after using, and being very impressed with, an older (FD71?) model at my workplace. By current standards the FD75 is something of a dinosaur and is quite bulky due to it using floppy discs for recording images. The maximum image size that can be saved is 640 x 480 pixels which equates to approx 0.3 megapixels. If you want to print your photos then the absolute maximum size you could hope for would be 6x4", though to be quite honest I've never printed my shots. So why did I buy the FD75? Well, the older Mavica model I'd used at work had proved to be bullet-proof over a number of years heavy useage by many users. The advantage of the FD75 over it's predecessor is the 10x zoom lens(optical, not digital zoom). Normally I use Olympus SLR cameras for my photography but I decided to enter...

Mavica - good but pricey

Advantages: floppy disk storage
Disadvantages: expensive

...The Sony Mavica digital camera is a VGA camera with an intelligent flash. What I like about this one is the you can store your pictures on a floppy disk which you put into the back of the camera. They say that you can get up to 40 pictures on one floppy disk, but unless you select 'fine mode', where you can only store 20, the picture quality is not particularly good. It has six different modes of 'auto-exposure' which to be perfectly honest I don't really understand - the manual was not much help here. It's a nice, good-looking, compact digital camera but I'm still not totally convinced of the results. It's also a rather expensive at £450. Please remember to rate this opinion before you leave. A Sony Digital Photo Frame Review

Advantages: Good if you have a lot of pictures on your computer.
Disadvantages: There is always something moving in the corner of your eye.

...I bought this digital photo frame for my eldest daughter as the sales assisstant in the shop said it is ideal for people with a lot of pictures and as she is leaving school soon she will have a lot of photos lying on the computer. This gift is ideal for people is their computer it full up with holiday pictures etc. It is a regular photo frame size, which is ideal. The picture quality is fantastic, however this depends on the quality of the camera you took the photo on in the first place. It is good that you can change the picture often by uploading new photos onto it (instructions make this very easy). You can choose which pictures you wish to view and how the transition of the photos occurs. The only down side is that if the photo is small then it doesn't stretch to the edges of the frame....

A DIGITAL CAMERA THAT USES FLOPPY DISKS

Advantages: Uses cheap floppies, not too expensive, easy to use, good quality
Disadvantages: Big and heavy, still more expensive than some other digicams.

...Many people have heard of the Sony Mavica. It has been around for a while and was a revolutionary digital camera because it allows the use of ordinary, cheap floppy disks! A new version is now available which writes onto CD-Rs, but that?s another story. FLOPPIES So why is it such an advantage that it uses floppies? Simple ? price. Normal digital cameras come with 2 ? 8MB RAM to store images on. New RAM costs loads, so if you want to take more than pictures than the amount of RAM you have, you?re screwed. But with floppies, you can carry as many as you want around with you and they?re dead cheap. Granted, you?ll only get 1.44MB on each disk, but you can take loads of them ? they?re hardly huge. A set back however is that it takes a while (Around 5 ? 8 secs) to save each image. THE CAMERA The quality of pictures is excellent...

...Brilliant, user friendly Digital camera! Well done Sony. Chose FD 90 over FD 85. Mavica range was recommended by existing users and I did not consider any other manufacturers. The most difficult task was to choose from the Mavica range. This camera's greatest attribute is recording to floppy disk. No hassle transfers to PC. Camera also has a disk copying feature for on the spot copying. Excellent for web site creation or e-mail transmission of images. Has 16X digital zoom. One of the main purchase criteria for a digital camera was the ability to also have a wide angle lens. This was available as an extra but not many cameras have this option which is essential for internal shots, etc. Various filters are also available of which I also ordered two and a reasonable range of accessories for this camera appears in Sony's catalogue. SONY - THE NAME FOR FRAME ACCLAIM

Advantages: Crisp images, easy to use, looks lovely, large screen
Disadvantages: No USB Cable supplied - so no way of getting photographs onto the frame without buying one

...or slideshow preferences are lost in the event of a power outage or if you unplug it. Seriously Sony, how much would it have cost to slip a lithium battery in to alleviate this problem? Also, the fact that you have to purchase a proprietary Sony Bluetooth dongle at over £30 to make use of the frames Bluetooth capabilities irks me a little, and makes me wonder how Sony can boast about the frames Bluetooth credentials when it?s not Bluetooth capable out of the box. Finally, the remote is a little on the small size, meaning losing it is a real possibility.
