A week's successful holiday in St. Agnello, Sorrento (Italy)

Advantages: Excellent, inexpensive public transport
Disadvantages: Traffic is very heavy don't even consider a hire car

...Eight days in St. Agnello, Sorrento, Italy. We have just returned from a very successful week in Sorrento. Arriving at Naples Airport we took the regular bus service to Sorrento as far as St. Agnello which is once stop before Sorrento itself. The journey time should be one hour and the single fare was 10.0?. Having poured over many reviews of hotels in Sorrento area we chose the Alpha and found it to be the Alpha and Omega of Hotels. We couldn?t have asked for anything better; from the moment we walked through the front door we could see that we were going to like it. We were met by a cheerful, smiling, English speaking receptionist who greeted us with the news that they had decided to upgrade our room to a panoramic one with a balcony without extra charge. We were booked for bed and breakfast but after the first evening...

Diamond review  Bella Sorrento

Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Traffic noise

.... Recommendation I would not hesitate to recommend Sorrento as a place to visit. I felt that a seven day visit was plenty to see most of what we wanted to, 10 days would certainly be sufficient and allow for an extra couple of relaxation days as after most of the sight seeing we were pretty tired in the evenings. It does get crowded in the summer months and naturally very hot as well and it is important to take account of the traffic noise when booking a hotel. What you will get though is a busy tourist resort frequented by Italians which is an excellent base from which to explore a beautiful part of Italy. For more information check out www.sorrentotourism.it Thanks for reading my review....

Diamond review  Sorrento, I'll be back!

Advantages: Interesting town, great weather, good base to explore the area
Disadvantages: Traffic and pollution

...Sorrento, on the west coast of Italy, south of Naples, is an ideal holiday spot, whether you want to lie on the beach all day or get out and about soaking up the local culture. The scenery is absolutely stunning from the volcanic black sand of the beaches to the craggy cliffs overlooking the bay. In the height of Summer the temperature is pretty uncomfortable for most Brits, and the heat is quite draining even in September when I visited. The average temperature was around 30C (it had been over 40C in July), so sun screen, hat, and plenty of water to drink are essential items for a day by the sea, or wandering through the town. We did get one day of rain, which coincided with the great blackout of 2003 when the power was off in all of Italy and many other parts of Europe. We still managed to enjoy our day, and it didn?t spoil...

Sorrento not just for the oaps

Advantages: A wonderful place, Ideal for site seeing
Disadvantages: none

...Ever heard the phrase "See Naples and die?" well who ever first said this must have just landed at Naples airport! The landing was scary! One minute I was looking over the bay of Naples pointing out Capri and Ischia to the old man the next I was practically eye balling a woman in a tower block hanging out her washing!! This was my introduction to Italy, I can truely say this was the only bad thing about the holiday! The old man and I visited Sorrento on an Airtours bargain -£199 half board at a 4 star hotel!! Sorrento is a magical place, forget the image of it being for pensioners and folk that stop off on their med cruises its actually quite a lively place BUT it has also kept alot of its old charm and hasnt succombed to mass to tourism. Sorrento has a great train link to Naples which stops at Pompeii and Hersulaum ( two...

Sorrento in a day - it's all you need!

Advantages: Pleasant old town, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Few proper beaches, inflated prices

...When it comes to travel I have permanently itchy feet. Even when I'm on holiday I just can't satisfy that itch and so when I get back home I often feel that I haven't done justice to a particular destination. My holidays lately have been based around touring an area or making my base in a good central location and taking day trips to nearby places. Sorrento was one of my must-visits when in Naples for a week earlier this year. An easy to negotiate hour or so train journey from Naples (only 25KM but stops everywhere), Sorrento offers a very pleasant alternative to the hustle and bustle of southern Italy's largest city. The train journey itself is integral to the day out. You travel on the Circumvesuviana line which passes very closes to the Mount Vesuvius and the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum which were famously devastated by...

My favourite corner of Italy!

Advantages: Very friendly and great food!
Disadvantages: I don't go often enough!

...the surrounding hills. Towards the end of August is also worth avoiding as thats when most of Italy shuts down for the summer holidays and it gets very busy. In may and September, the weather has usually been fine. Sunny enough to catch a good tan, but not so hot that you cant get around without feeling very uncomfortable. THE FOOD Good found is to be found all over Italy and Sorrento is no exception. The local cuisine is to die for with plenty of choice of venues to suit all budgets. Italy has a reputaion of being expensive, probably a reputaion which has clung to it since people began straying from the Costa's in numbers. Nowadays, Italy is no more expensive than like for like in the UK. As you would expect, pizzas are fabulous - thin crispy bases cooked in most places in real wood burning pizza ovens on stone slabs. Most things you would...

Sorrento my view

Advantages: Lots to see,reasonable prices,
Disadvantages: noisy hotel on main street

...Sorrento. Landing at Naples Airport then a coach to Sorrento and our hotel in the older part of this city. At first sight an impression of narrow streets and pavements, when there are any, houses, shops and other buildings packed tightly together. The journey along and round the Bay of Naples gives a foretaste of this area of Italy. The mountains on one side and the road as you near Sorrento running along the side of the cliff, if that's how you describe the mountains that drop down to sea level. The streets of Sorrento are busy, noisy and narrow with buildings three to four storeys plus high and entrances through doorways at the front in alleyways round the back and staircases to the upper apartments. The sea is accessible by steps or roads descending steeply with twists and turns to arrive at small flat areas adjacent to it...

Wonderful Sorrento

Advantages: fantastic scenery and good food
Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything

...Sorrento has it all, the hospitality of Italy combined with a relaxed atmosphere. It is located on the Amalfi coast which is home to some of the most scenic views in all of Italy. Sorrento is very clean and has a small city that offers great seafood and all Italy's specialty cuisines. I would definatly reccomend it to everyone who wants to make the trip to Southern Italy, its worth it. Sorrento is an excellent alternative to staying in Napoli - it isn't plagued by the same poverty and graffiti. The town is beautiful and offers convenient ferries to Capri, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sorrento is linked to Naples by an inter-city train system that is farily convienient. Early spring is especially perfect here because of all the orange and lemon groves in various backyards and gardens. Stayed at the "Sorrento Holiday...

stunning sorrento

Advantages: fantastic scenery, good food and plenty of shops
Disadvantages: can be very hectic and crossing the road is a nightmare

...I have always wanted to visit italy, so in september i decided to go. Originally i wanted to go to rome but we just took a last minute holiday to the neopolitan riviera and were not sure where we were going to go. We arrived in Naples and were told we were staying at Sant Agnello which is a 10 min walk to sorrento or a few minutes on the train, which i might add you would be wise to do as the traffic fumes are horrendous if you walk along the main road. Anyway the cost of travel is very cheap. We visited sorrento on our first day and i was delighted with the place, plenty of restraunts my favourite was pizza aurora if you like pizza they have about 50 different pizza's. Visit the foreigners club too which is a bar/restraunt they have english speaking waiters and the bar has a fantastic terrace which gives you an amazing veiw...

Super Sorrento!

Advantages: A beautiful town and easy to travel to lots more places
Disadvantages: Some steep walking so may not suit everyone

...Sorrento is a great centre to explore some beautiful parts of Italy. We saved money by organising our own trips - public transport is really efficient, whether it's train, bus or boat, and much cheaper (and more fun) than trips organised by tour operators. You have to see Pompeii - out tour guide was an unusual mix of witty academic who loved Pompeii enough to want to take us tourists around! 10 Euros well spent. We got the train on to Ercolano and I'm glad we did because we got a real taste of ancient life, probably more so than in Pompeii. Whatever you do, don't miss Positano and Amalfi - this is where some of the steep walking comes in but wonderful little places. When you go to the beach at Positano turn right when you get to the sea, there's a cove further round which is cheaper and prettier. I live in Scotland and I didn...
