A week's successful holiday in St. Agnello, Sorrento (Italy)

Advantages: Excellent, inexpensive public transport
Disadvantages: Traffic is very heavy don't even consider a hire car

...Eight days in St. Agnello, Sorrento, Italy. We have just returned from a very successful week in Sorrento. Arriving at Naples Airport we took the regular bus service to Sorrento as far as St. Agnello which is once stop before Sorrento itself. The journey time should be one hour and the single fare was 10.0?. Having poured over many reviews of hotels in Sorrento area we chose the Alpha and found it to be the Alpha and Omega of Hotels. We couldn?t have asked for anything better; from the moment we walked through the front door we could see that we were going to like it. We were met by a cheerful, smiling, English speaking receptionist who greeted us with the news that they had decided to upgrade our room to a panoramic one with a balcony without extra charge.   Bella Sorrento

Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Traffic noise

.... Recommendation I would not hesitate to recommend Sorrento as a place to visit. I felt that a seven day visit was plenty to see most of what we wanted to, 10 days would certainly be sufficient and allow for an extra couple of relaxation days as after most of the sight seeing we were pretty tired in the evenings. It does get crowded in the summer months and naturally very hot as well and it is important to take account of the traffic noise when booking a hotel. What you will get though is a busy tourist resort frequented by Italians which is an excellent base from which to explore a beautiful part of Italy.   Sorrento, I'll be back!

Advantages: Interesting town, great weather, good base to explore the area

...at speaking Italian are appreciated, but you will often find they immediately switch to English anyway. This is especially so in situations where there is some urgency, like in busy shops or when buying travel tickets, so I didn?t take it personally. I found it best to start in Italian, and then take my lead from them. CONCLUSION As you can see I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Sorrento, and would recommend it to anyone as both an interesting town in it?s own right, and a good base for seeing the Campania region of Italy. It?s a very tourist oriented town, full of hotels and bed and breakfast establishments, but the essential Italian nature of the place still shines through. Sorrento not just for the oaps

...Ever heard the phrase "See Naples and die?" well who ever first said this must have just landed at Naples airport! The landing was scary! Sorrento in a day - it's all you need!

Advantages: Pleasant old town, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Few proper beaches, inflated prices

...When it comes to travel I have permanently itchy feet. Even when I'm on holiday I just can't satisfy that itch and so when I get back home I often feel that I haven't done justice to a particular destination. My holidays lately have been based around touring an area or making my base in a good central location and taking day trips to nearby places. Sorrento was one of my must-visits when in Naples for a week earlier this year. ...Sorrento. Landing at Naples Airport then a coach to Sorrento and our hotel in the older part of this city. At first sight an impression of narrow streets and pavements, when there are any, houses, shops and other buildings packed tightly together. The journey along and round the Bay of Naples gives a foretaste of this area of Italy. The mountains on one side and the road as you near Sorrento running along the side of the cliff, if that's how you describe the mountains that drop down to sea level. The Grand Hotel Flora, Sorrento

Advantages: Friendly staff and atmosphere, Clean and well managed, lovely food
Disadvantages: could maybe have more evening entertainment at the bar

...I really feel that this photo does not do the hotel justice. Myself and my husband have stayed in this hotel for both our trips to Italy, and it has been a very enjoyable experience both times. The hotel itself i feel lives up to its name, especially the staircase and stunning chandelier and staircase in the main reception. The views of mount Vesuvius and the bay of Naples from the top of the hotel restaurant were breathtaking, especially at sunset. Talking of the restaurant, the staff were very friendly and efficiant and you got a little feel on the Italian culture through food and the way of the staff. The rooms were simple, and not too cluttered, having the essentials such as fridge, safe and air conditioning, as well as sky TV. My favourite corner of Italy!

If you visit the Amalfi coast just once from Sorrento, my advice is to go one way by road, and the other by boat, that way you get two different views of the coast line, and good views of the Island of Capri also. BEACHES Don't go to Sorrento for beaches, go somewhere else. Italy is a great country but generally, I personally don't like how they do beaches. There are some bathing platforms at the bottom of the cliffs in Sorrento, but the uniform lines of sun loungers is typical of what Italians do in many places. The platforms are privately owned, so you'll have to pay to use them. If you want a nice beach not too far from Sorrento, seek out Marina Di Puolo. Get on an orange bus to Capo Di Sorrento which is up the hill past the Hotels Capo Di Monte and Hotel Bristol away from Naples. The bus stops at Capo Di Sorrento...

...Sorrento was one of the most beautiful places i have ever visited in my life. My family and I decided to go to the south of Italy for pure pleasure and to enjoy the civillians of Sorrento's loving and welcoming nature. The hotel we picked was spot on - not in a busy, touristy packed resort but in a place where we could relax a bit and enjoy the scenery of the beautiful town of Sorrento. It also isn't long walk from the town centre depending on how much you like to walk! This Hilton hotel was one of the last places we picked to have a look at (probably because Paris Hilton came into our minds!), but we booked it in the end because of the quality of the hotel based on reviews. Wonderful Sorrento

Advantages: fantastic scenery and good food
Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything

...Sorrento has it all, the hospitality of Italy combined with a relaxed atmosphere. It is located on the Amalfi coast which is home to some of the most scenic views in all of Italy. Sorrento is very clean and has a small city that offers great seafood and all Italy's specialty cuisines. I would definatly reccomend it to everyone who wants to make the trip to Southern Italy, its worth it. Sorrento is an excellent alternative to staying in Napoli - it isn't plagued by the same poverty and graffiti. The town is beautiful and offers convenient ferries to Capri, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sorrento is linked to Naples by an inter-city train system that is farily convienient.
