...You could be forgiven for missing Sousse off the itinerary whilst visiting Tunisia. After all it is Tunisia's second largest City, but unlike Tunis the Capital, Sousse has a reputation of being a lot more industrialised. During my recent visit to the Country I stayed in a Holiday Resort called Port El Kantaoui, which is a purpose built Resort just 12 Kilometres from Sousse. FIRST IMPRESSIONS My first glimpse of Sousse was from the transfer Coach from the Airport at Monastir en route to Port El Kantaoui. Sousse seemed like a bustling, lively, place with plenty of traffic and People, but it did look rather run down and not the sort of place where one would spend a Holiday. Hotel Salem - Sousse

Advantages: Absolutely Loads
Disadvantages: A Few but nothing to put you off.

..., puddings, meat with ollived and dips, bread, rolls, fried food, curries, spag bol, pasta, all different Tunisian foods, fish, meat, omelettes. Absolutely stacks of choice. I wasn't let down a bit. Only the fact I put weight on and coudlnt fit into some of my clothes for my belly. I don't recommend Sousse - abit of a dump. I do recommend the Port El Kantoui - lovely harbour. Can't wait too go back. HOTEL: Lovely sized room. Clean and tidy. Towels changed everyday and folded into lovely shapes. TV - we had the choice of about 5 channels, quite good for a foreign country, choice of Night Rider, Law and Order, Jerricho, and a few more good ones. Good size balcony. Lovely Airconditioning, which you can leave on allday and night if you wish. For us ladies - a dressing table and chair. Hairdryer in bathroom. For you men - shaving...

Sousse - stuck in a time warp

Advantages: Good food and it's a bit different
Disadvantages: Constant hassle from the locals

...of harrassment ruin your holiday. Scams include locals asking you to change out of date 5 dinar notes for them but my favourite has to be the one they use to entice you into their shops. Sometimes locals will approach taxis carrying tourists arriving at the main square of Sousse. They'll shout to the taxi drivers, in Arabic, asking which hotel they'd picked their fare up from. Then they approach the tourists and tell them that they work in the kitchen of their hotel and ask them if they would like to see around their brother's shop. The tourists have no reason to disbelieve their story because they knew which hotel they were staying at. Some people have spent a couple of hours in the shop and have eventually had to pay to get out. I also found that locals get extremely annoyed if you start bargaining with them for goods you're not really...

Tej Marhaba Sousse

Advantages: Very good service
Disadvantages: Entertainment not for the under 50s!

...I stayed at the Tej Marhaba in Sousse, in April with my mum and grandma. It did say 5* however the rep soon explained that Tunisia's 5* and the West's 5* are not the same, which I understood when I saw the rooms. Nevertheless, I have to say I enjoyed my stay. The furniture in the individual rooms was average, the colours were green and brown, not my favourite combination! The entrance to the hotel was lovely with marble floors and a water feature in the middle surrounded by the bars. The cleaners, who I left a good tip for, always did my room well and what was so sweet was the fact that I'd leave a vest top or something on the floor (I'm a bit messy) and I would come back and it would be neatly folded into a pattern on my clean and tidy bed when I got back. Amazing! The food was delicious, we had half board, to be honest...

Advantages: The beach
Disadvantages: Centre slightly crowded

...Lying only a half hour drive from Monastir Airport, Sousse is a lovely little town with everything to cater for everyone's needs. Hotels are spread along the main road of a resort which is fringed by the long and sandy beach. The edge of the resort is about a 40 minute walk from the town centre which is, as expected, usually bustling and busy. There are lots of the usual trinket shops where the obligatory haggling takes place. However, one refreshing surprise is the fixed price shops where, as you'd expect all prices are fixed and haggling is not an option. The shop is in the centre of the main square and is situated on four floors. It includes everything from videos, cassettes to ornaments and clothes. Admittedly, the fun of haggling is a bit missed, but for those who like to just go somewhere, buy something and know what...

DREAMS BEACH HOTEL, SOUSSE, TUNISIA

Advantages: Clean, Right on the Beach
Disadvantages: Need transport to get to Sousse or Port El Kantoei

...man with an organ singing who was hilarious as he tried to sing English songs from the 50' and 60's without actually knowing the words and kept us highly entertained for about an hour) but is quite nice for relaxing in at the end of the day and chatting with and getting to know your fellow guests.. It has a fabulous centre piece of a serpent wrapped around a tree which is ceiling height. We saw a group of traditional belly dancers and a very impressive man who walked on broken glass and balanced on swords while carrying members of the audience. Both acts (these acts do the hotel circuit throughout sousse and port el kantoei) are worth seeing and are good fun without being too holiday campish. One night in September 99 my wife and I stepped in to a Tunisian Airway jet plane at Aldergrove airport at 22:00 hrs, we were embarking on another late deal 1 week holiday to Tunisia. As we boarded the plane the only thing we knew was that we were staying in a 3 star hotel half board somewhere in Tunisia for 1 week. We arrived in Monastir airport at 02:30 local time so there was not a lot to see. Sun, Beach, but no real fun

Hot spot for temptresses hunting Tunisan toy boys

...(By the way I wasn't on the hunt for a toy boy as I'm only 24!) I've just returned from a cheap all inclusive winter break to Tunisia. My friend and I stayed at the Tour Khalef hotel which is about 2 miles from the centre of Sousse, the third biggest city in Tunisia. The Tour Khalef is part of a complex of three hotels and guests can use facilities at the other hotels such as gym and pools as well. We were all inclusive, which cost £235 for a week, and speaking to other people half board was around £190. The reception area and bar is very grand, it's huge with archways and mosaics on the ceilings. Lots of comfortable seating and a nice place to enjoy a drink. There wasn't much going on in the day though, no music played. There was a big TV screen on which they showed football matches but it was a bit dull in...

Beware, research before you book!

...Tunisia was already top of our list for our summer holiday, on paper it had everything, sun, sea, white sand, great scenery, places to visit and a hugely different culture, we decided to book a two week package deal, half board, allocated on arrival holiday for July. The hotel-Royal Beach in Sousse seemed very basic but ok. The next day we had breakfast-some dodgy choices but I found some pastries so stuffed my face with those! We decided to hit the pool as soon as possible. We were there for about a minute when the attendant demanded 4 Dinar (the Tunisian currency is Dinar-4 Dinar is approximately 2 pounds) just for the privelage of putting our towels on sunbeds. We paid him and settled down to catch some rays. Approximately 30 seconds later another hotel employee was upon us demanding 20 dinar each for a Hotel Party at the pool...
