Winterhaven Hotel, Miami Beach

Advantages: Lovely little hotel
Disadvantages: Limited amenities, but what do youe expect for 2*...?

...yellow walls are accented with black and white photos of classic Miami Beach Deco hotels. Wooden Venetian blinds add to the airy, tropical feeling. The pool's nothing on that at The National - but who needs one ? The ocean's just acress the street ! Also, there's no restaurant, although they do serve a "continental" style breakfast in the lobby - or even on the verandah. There are also a hundered excellent eateries just a few blocks down Ocean Drive, so we didn't find the lack of a restaurant a problem at all. There's also the AMAZING "Jerry's Famous Diner" just around the corner at 1450 Collins Avenue, everything you could ever want for breakfast, lunch and dinner ! As with most South Beach hotels, there's no car park, but a valet parking service is available with a $25 daily fee. Just a reminder that you'll need to give them...

A good choice in South Beach

Advantages: Lots of personality, great location
Disadvantages: none

...The Sagamore is located in Miami's trendy South Beach area close to the beach, shops, bars and restaurants, however there are many hotels to choose from in this district. This hotel was suggested to us by our travel agent for its great location and facilities but we were sceptical as it describes itself as an 'Art Hotel' - made me wonder whether the atmosphere would be stuffy and pretentious. On entering the hotel, art is very much in evidence with a selection of chairs and tables that look more like scuptures (some of which have notices telling you not to sit on them). However the reception staff were very welcoming. The elevator is a sight to behold, being lined with black alligator skin (real or fake) and minimal lighting - very 'Austin Powers'! We were impressed with our room even though there was no sea view, we were given a suite...

...We stayed at The National Hotel for a few days last summer, on Collins Avenue, one block from Ocean Drive in the heart of Miami's Art Deco Historical District. Built in 1939, the 13-story National Hotel lobby contains original period antiques and richly designed wood furnishings. It was restored in 1997 to showcase the original Art Deco details (the concierge desk is a precise replica of the original from 1939 !), this hotel is a visual delight for Art Deco fans ! It's not a massive hotel (unlike the Loew's just a block down the street), but then most of the South Beach / Ocean Drive hotels are acutally pretty small affairs... Advantages: Great beaches, nightlife and shopping
Disadvantages: it can be expensive

South Beach Follower Craves Carbs (The South Beach Diet)

Advantages: Good, well structured book with case studies and food lists plus recipes
Disadvantages: Difficult to stick to

...I came across the South Beach Diet a few years ago as the book was a freebie on a magazine. I'd previously heard of the Atkins diet and thought it far too extreme for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm keen to lose weight but cutting out specific food groups indefinitely isn't something that I would be able to sustain or that imagined would be particularly healthy - not to mention some of the side effects that I had seen on TV and in magazines. In my opinion, The South Beach Diet is a "lite" version of the above. Basically, you cut out all carbs for the first 14 days, then slowly start to introduce good carbs back into the diet after 14 days. ...Miami Ink, if you haven't heard about it already, is a TV show about a tattoo parlour in Miami (if you hadn't already guessed!). The series began in July 2005, introducing four eager tattooists, Ami James, Chris Nunez, Chris Garver and Darren Brass, as well as Ami's apprentice, Yoji Harada. Throughout the episodes new tattooists enter and go, the most famous probably being Kat Von D who turned the studio around with her beautiful portrait tattoos. Each show lasts about an hour long, and during that time we see a variety of clients enter the studio to get their tattoos. The guys who run/work in the studio are all fairly young, heavily tattooed and have been through different walks of life. Most of them have spent their lives tattooing, so working in the shop you can tell means a lot to them. Each artist has a different personality...

The Trotters do Miami

Advantages: More brillaint humour and a great story
Disadvantages: dodgy canned laughter in latter part of episode

Review of Only Fools And Horses - Miami Twice (DVD)

Miami Vice

Advantages: Numb/Encore Soundtrack
Disadvantages: Dull, Uninspiring, Bad dialogue, Overlong

...I really wanted to like Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. I tried hard. After seeing respectable performances in Ali (Foxx) and The Recruit (Farrell) I began thinking something like "Yeah, these guys could maybe take my interest in future movies." Unfortunately for me, the next two films I saw them star in were Jarhead and S.W.A.T.. To say that I was mildly pissed off with those two films would be a huge understatement. After sampling Michael Mann's work for the first time with the sheer brilliance that was 1995's Heat, I expected great things. After a decent opening scene in the club, aided by the Numb/Encore Linkin Park/Jay-Z mix, I thought yeah, the groundwork in Miami Vice had been set. Almost immediately after that song ended though the plot had lost me entirely; I just couldn't believe just how tedious and frustrating the rest...

Hotel Miami

Advantages: Sits on the Beach
Disadvantages: Pool area always crowded

..., very welcome. Having said that, none of the staff have ever been rude at all. The location of the Hotel is ideal. If you walk out the main reception doors and head for the beach, it is literally, a two minute walk to the sea. I mean the sea. Not the beach. Over the sand and to the waves. If you walk around the pool way to the beach, maybe a 30 second walk? There are plenty of shops around the area and because Es Cana is such a little place,everywhere is within easy walking distance. The nightlife has definitely improved since all those years ago. But I didnt stay out much this year. I'd rather sit at the bar in Hotel Miami and watch the entertainment. (Which I've seen a million times over now...but still insist on watching - mainly because the staff are so friendly and fun!)...

Be a beach bum

Advantages: beautiful scenery

...Grand Anse Beach is in the South West Coast of Grenada. It is on the Carribean side of the Island. The other side of the island is on the Atlantic Coast and the sea there can be quite rough at times. It is about a 10m minute drive from the capital St Georges and is reputed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the carribean. We were staying in the next bay our hotel the Rex Grenadian was suituated at Pink Gin Beach. I just love that name. Anyway I digress. we went to Grand Anse Beach where the departure point for the Whale and Dolphin watching tour set off from. What impressed me was the white sands and the clear turqoise water.
