Between 1840 and 1846 R.H.C. Ubsdell walked the length and breadth of Hampshire calling at the big houses and estates, looking for portraiture work. As a by-product he painted in watercolours the pictures of the churches he passed on his way. There are over a hundred of these watercolours, virtually unseen for over a century. Ubsdell's great great great grandson Chris Brindle plotted the locations of all the churches and set out to discover Ubsdell's Hampshire. Where Ubsdell painted, Chris took photographs. With the help of his newly found distant cousins Chris uncovered as many Ubsdell miniatures on ivory, oil paintings, newspaper illustrations, stereoscopic photographs, and carte-de-visite photographic visiting cards as he could find. Chris scoured auctions for the works, and where he could, purchased works from existing owners. 'Hampshire', in two volumes, tells the story behind the places and pictures in Ubsdell's Hampshire and how the artist rose from poverty to local celebrity. Volume 1: Portsmouth & South Hampshire Volume 2: Southampton & North Hampshire Portsmouth Museums staged an exhibition of Ubsdell's work from May 26th to November 30th 2012. One Inch Sheet 315 Southampton Water 1884 - published 1999; intro by Jude James. This early Inch to the Mile map covers an area of Hampshire centred on Southampton. There is a tiny portion of Wiltshire in the NW corner. The River Test runs through the map, leading to Southampton Water. Part of the New Forest is in the SW quarter. Coverage stretches from Mogshade Hill and Landford eastward to Botley and Swanwick, and from Melchet Park and Romsey southward to Beaulieu Heath and Hamble Spit. There is a fine contrast between Southampton with its expanding docks and populated hinterland and the leafy remoteness of the New Forest, nicely portrayed by the OS on this map. Other features include the vast Netley Hospital, with its railway branch; and close observers of the parish boundaries on these maps will note the extra parochial Melchet Park. On the reverse we include a map of the village of Sarisbury. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Hampshire: Bartley, Bishopstoke, Bitterne, Botley, Bramshaw, Bursledon, Cadnam, Chilworth, Dibden, Durley, East Wellow, Eling, Hamble, Hound, Hythe, Lyndhurst, Millbrook, Minstead, Netley, North Baddesley, Otterbourne, Romsey, Sarisbury, Sherfield English, South Stoneham, Southampton, Totton, Woolston. Wiltshire: Landford, Plaitford, West Wellow.
