Hampshire: Volume 2: Southampton and North Hampshire: Discovering the 19th Century World of Portsmouth Artist R.H.C. Ubsdell - Chris

Between 1840 and 1846 Ubsdell walked the length and breadth of Hampshire calling at the big houses and estates, looking for portraiture work. As a by-product he painted in watercolours the churches he passed on his way. There are over a hundred of these watercolours, virtually unseen for over a century. Ubsdell's great great great grandson Chris Brindle plotted the locations of all the churches and set out to discover Ubsdell's Hampshire. Where Ubsdell painted, Chris took photographs and researched the stories behind the people and places in the pictures. The result is the two volumes of ' Hampshire: Discovering the 19th Century World of Portsmouth Artist R.H.C. Ubsdell': Volume 1: Portsmouth & South Hampshire Volume 2: Southampton & North Hampshire In this second volume Chris discusses the families of Southampton and Northern Hampshire, their churches and their houses, the Barker Mills (Millbrook), the Nightingales (East Wellow), the Goldsmids Cookes and Dalgetys (East Tytherley), the Nortons Rotherfields and Scotts (East Tisted), the Portals (Whitchurch), the Austens (Church Oakley):- (the churches illustrated on the cover) and many other people and places including the history of Southampton and the story of how it lost its seaside. Portsmouth Museums staged an exhibition of Ubsdell's work from May 26th to November 30th 2012. ... less

Hampshire Sheet 65.10 Southampton (West) 1908 - published 2007; intro by Alan Godfrey. Few areas have changed more comprehensively than this highly detailed map, for in 1908 the tide still came up to the western shore, and almost up to the station. This land was infilled as part of the Western Docks project between 1927 and 1934. Our map shows the area from French Street northward to Polygon Road, and westward to Waterloo Road. Though much of the map was therefore mud and sand in 1908 - with several creeks, there is still much of interest, features including Bugle Street, St Michael's church, Western Esplanade, Corporation Baths, West Quay, Lansdowne Hill, Polygon, West Marlands (before the Civic Centre was built), West Park, Thorners Charity, Southampton West station, Fourposts, Blechynden. ... less

Filling station
Advantages: Cheap, friendly, food is tasty
Disadvantages: Limited menu, no toilets
...and graces, and nor should you put them on yourself. On the other hand, its not one of those slightly irritating places that's all self-consciously "working class" and has descended into self-parody. Instead, it's a straightforward, unassuming place that serves the sort of food that won't win Michelin stars but will fill you up and keep you going. If that appeals, then the Station Cafe can be recommended...

Living with LPG
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Can be difficult to find
...I would like just to keep moving! On a long trip, you may not find the LPG station at all without local knowledge. Even today, the LPG filling infrastructure is generally poor. If you add the pump reliability problems to the mix, then I would consider carefully whether there is sufficient gas available in your area to make a conversion worthwhile. Most of us fill up near to where we live. I have...

A south Hampshire village
Advantages: Picturesque lake; good pub food
Disadvantages: Lack of public transport
...for the fact that it became the unofficial officers' mess in the period leading up to D-Day when the leaders of the Allied Forces where stationed at Southwick House. It is said that while Eisenhower drank beer, Montgomery confined himself to grapefruit juice.
Just behind the Golden Lion you will find Southwick Brewhouse, which houses a shop and a museum. It dates from the seventeenth century and was...
