Advantages: Lots to see and do. Good shopping. Great history. Excellent public spaces. Family friendly. Disadvantages: Can be raucous at chucking out time (but what town is not).

On the plus side, Southend is 45 minutes from London and easy to get to by road, rail and, if you live in Alicante, Edinburgh or one of the many other destinations served by the airport, by air. I imagine that, assuming you get the tides right, turning up by sea is possible too.
