Premier Travel Inn Southwark - London

Advantages: Excellent value, location
Disadvantages: Basic hotel

...I try to arrange a couple of days break for my husband and myself, away from the children, every Easter holiday and we like to visit London and see the sites. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation in central London then Premier Travel Inn is probably your best bet. I considered three - County Hall, near the London Eye; London Bridge, north side of the bridge and Southwark. I have to admit that I didn't know where Southwark was until I looked on a map and I was surprised to find out how central to everything it was, so I chose to stay here. The Premier Travel Inn Southwark is about eight minutes walk from London Bridge Underground Station - so make sure that your luggage has wheels! I struggled but had a rest in the grounds of Southwark Cathedral at the halfway point. Doctor Who fans may remember the episode...

Good quality budget hotel in historic Southwark

Advantages: Affordable, modern, stylish, quiet situation, good decor, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Compact rooms, average rooms, away from West End

...The Southwark Rose Hotel is a modern hotel on Southwark Bridge Road just across the Thames from the heart of the City of London. It used to describe itself as London's first budget boutique hotel, but although more attention might have been paid to the decor in the bedrooms and the common areas than in other hotels of a comparable standard, I think 'boutique' is going a bit far. The hotel is conveniently placed for business people working in Southwark/London Bridge areas or in the heart of the City - the Bank of England is about 10 minutes brisk walk away. The hotel does have the added advantage of a car park, which is usually fairly empty. Possibly the fee charged is quite high. For tourists, the hotel is one of the closest to Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. There is a very interesting walk through the old dock buildings...

Decent London Hotel on the Southbank

Advantages: Continental Breakfast included
Disadvantages: Nothing

...for all four of us for the two days especially as in the past we have had to pay more for inferior accommodation and had to pay extra for breakfast on top. The hotel is situated on the South Bank near to Blackfriars Bridge with the nearest underground station being Southwark on the Jubilee line and this was about a ten minute walk from the hotel. Alternatively you could cross Blackfriars Bridge on foot and use Blackfriars train Station. The Tate Modern was a pleasant five minute walk beside the river and after another minute walking you will come upon Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The Millennium bridge is here also and walking across(it doesn't sway anymore) it to the other side of the river you will arrive near to St Paul's Cathedral which is now free to the public although if you want a tour you still have to pay for that. ARRIVAL...

Any Room At The Inn?

Advantages: Cheap centralish location, Breakfast included
Disadvantages: None

...'s nice to know you'll be checking in somewhere that isn't a flea pit. Size of rooms does vary from hotel to hotel I've found and the HIE Southwark had perhaps one of the smallest bedrooms I'd stayed in, but this didn't mean it was a pokey or cramped room. One thing I have found when booking HIE in this country is the cheapest place to book them is the web site, which is extremely easy to use. After searching for a hotel in London I came across the cheapest option for my dates and that was the HIE Southwark. After looking on the handy map the site had along with other details of the hotel it didn't appear to be too far out of central London nor did it look to be a complete nightmare to find! In fact it looked perhaps a little too easy to find! With the link from my special offers email I booked the hotel for £59 for the night, this did...

London Mercure - just what the doctor ordered!

Advantages: Very close to Tate Modern, and Southwark tube station
Disadvantages: Located on the other side of the river from the likes of Oxford Street

...I stayed at the London Mercure London City last weekend as part of a birthday treat from my boyfriend (I believe he booked it as part of a deal with rail tickets/show tickets/hotel, so am unable to tell you how much the hotel costs separately!). We stayed there for one night (a Saturday) after spending the day shopping in Oxford Street and the evening watching Phantom of the Opera at the London Palladium. We were able to check-in from 2 o'clock onwards, and we arrived at approximately 5pm. We were greeted at reception by a member of staff and a trainee, and were offered a smoking or non-smoking room. We opted for a non-smoking room and were given room 502 on the 5th floor. Room 502 is just a few steps away from the lift, and is forwards facing so you can see straight out into Southwark Street. It is a two-person room with a decent...

The funereal splendour of Victorian London

Advantages: Peaceful and scenic location, chock full of beauty and social history!
Disadvantages: Not the easiest place to get to, surrounding area a little run down

.... It was eventually abandoned by its owners in 1959 and was purchased later by Southwark Council for the bargain price of £1. It re-opened to the public in 2001 after dedicated restorative work made possible, in part, by a series of Lottery grants and a lot of specialised repair work. While great steps have been taken to restore the cemetery (both by Southwark council and voluntary groups such as the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery), much of the cemetery is effectively in disrepair having been effectively absorbed by the dense woodland that overtook the site during the years when it was neglected. This is what gives it its unique charm. It is a beautiful, green wilderness where crumbling ruins, ornate Victorian grave sites and an air of mystery provide an unparalleled shadowy gothic charm. Location and getting there The cemetery is...

Fantastic, gritty drama

Advantages: Great storyline and characters
Disadvantages: None

...This life earned a cult following for itself after it was first screened in 1996 late at night on BBC 2. After being moved forward in 1997, almost 4 million people were tuning in each week. However, it was sadly axed due to scriptwriting disputes. Following the lives of a group of lawyers sharing a house in Southwark, London, This life portrayed the problems that modern 1990's London life brought to the people who lived there. It made compelling viewing, culminating in Egg finding out about Milly's affair with her boss. Brilliant. Watch it now....

Excellent buffet lunch

Advantages: Good value buffet lunch, pleasant interior.
Disadvantages: Poor service

...We were wandering along the Jubilee walk by the Thames this afternoon and came across the Bengal Clipper restaurant in Shad Thames, Butler's Wharf near Southwark. It was late and we were feeling hungry. I had read about this restaurant in the Good Curry Guide and was suitably impressed by the number of awards that it had won. On a Sunday they offer a two course buffet lunch for £8 a head. Great value. The restaurant was reasonably busy even at the late hour of 3pm and I liked the contemporary Indian decor. There were a number of dishes to choose from, succulent lamb rogan ghosh, chicken curry, dahl, mixed vegetable curry with nan and raita. My only criticism was that the service was very poor, it was the first time that we had been to this restaurant and it would have been nice to be greeted more warmly. We were given no instruction...

You gotta see it to believe it

Advantages: Everything about it!
Disadvantages: None

...Damien Hirst's pharmay. A room on its own just of hundreds of different drugs and medicines you will find in Boots! Amazing! There is a tiny theatre like room showing visual moving art. There are sculptures and paintings by modern artists, and artists dating right back to 1900. Whatever era they come in, it's hard to distinguish the 'modern' from the 'old'. It's ALL very good, and some very amusing! You can get ther by underground on the Jubilee line to Southwark, or the Distric or Circle lines to Blacfriars. TATE MODERN BANKSIDE LONDON SE1 9TG Tel: 020 7887 8000 There are 10 wheelchairs available for disabled people on request. There are a couple of cafe's to sit and get something to eat. Expensive it may be, but you'll be grateful you've got somewhere to sit! The one we went it we were sitting opposite St Pauls...

The Turtle Corresponds

Advantages: I am not a happy Turtle
Disadvantages: Now neither are you

...Dear Mr James Bond First let me say how much I admire your dedication to the secret services and the war on terror in your recent documentary Goldeneye. Your tireless devotion to eradicating terrorists by, er, blowing up trains and hijacking aircraft is an example to us all. Especially to me. I've long been a most esteemed secret agent, you see, although obviously under very deep cover. So deep in fact that last time I was at GCHQ (where did you get the ingenious idea to disguise it as a contract publisher in Southwark?) they mistook me for someone else - 'wanker' is obviously the codename for 004, the slightly esteemed Mr Christopher Coldplay. Don't worry, not trying to trick you into giving away any national secrets. But for a man almost as physically intriguing as myself to be having naughty-bumpy with the incorrigible Miss...
