Advantages: The broadness of the music kept my interest throughout, they enjoyed being there! Disadvantages: None for me.
...As much as people like to mock my part of London, it does have some good points, and one of the diamonds in the rough is The Fairfield Halls.
An eclectic mix of ?artistes? have passed through the corridors of this Concert Hall since it opened in 1962, ranging from Robert Cray to Mott the Hoople. A quick check of their website tells me that both The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Curtis Stigers are also due to perform here in the near future. Okay, so it?s not exactly the O2 arena, or even the Brixton Academy, but it?s not bad.
It was here that I came to see The Soweto Gospel Choir recently. My friend had been more keen than I to attend, but I was interested enough to agree to go. I didn?t appreciate, until we saw the concert, that the Choir had such diverse musical scope. They mixed traditional African gospel and hymns...
Advantages: Great story, beautifully written Disadvantages: It finished!
...Synopsis: It is 1976 in apartheid South Africa on the eve of the Soweto uprising. Seventeen-year-old Ruby Winters? affluent Johannesberg neighbourhood is a far cry from the poverty stricken streets of Soweto, but Ruby is the daughter of white liberal parents fighting the cruel injustices of apartheid rule. Ruby?s mother owns an art gallery which controversially shows the work of black as well as white artists. At a time when blacks and whites are forbidden to even share the same public bench under the harsh laws of segregation, Ruby?s mother?s actions are brave as well as dangerous. Influenced by her parents? liberal politics, Ruby finds it extremely difficult to tolerate the racism of her all white, middle class school and soon becomes an outcast among her peers. But if that wasn?t bad enough, Ruby falls in love with the blue...
Advantages: honest film Disadvantages: Violent film
...of South Africa?s most pre eminent writer?s most popular book, updated to present day themes in the screenplay here to encompass the A.I.D.S and crime epidemic that?s now sweeping the country. One in five have the fatal disease, 40% are unemployed and the latest drug to sweep the ghettos is the debilitating Crystal Meth, the home made narcotic killing many more. With corrupt black politicians on the march and white farmers now facing reparation, Mugabe style. The country has indeed come full circle. I wouldn?t go back and many more of al colors are now leaving for good. This movie is an apology for that.
-The Plot-
To a pumping South African Hip Hop tune we meet the brooding Tsotsi (the enigmatic Presley Chweneyage), a baby faced teenage thug who is the local wannabe gangster in this particular sector of the three million strong Soweto...

Review of Tsotsi (DVD)
Advantages: Great mix of musical styles with something to suit everybody Disadvantages: Several songs are a bit repetitive
...Mafikizolo are one of the frontrunners in modern South African Mzansi music, a popular young urban blend of many styles and cultures. The band are also well known in the U.S., but even though they have played gigs in London, they have yet to really break into the UK market. However, Mafikizolo are very much worth knowing wherever you are.
THE BAND
When this album was made, there were three members of Mafikizolo, Nhlanhla Sibongile Mafu, the lead vocalist, Theo Kgosinkwe, and Tebogo Madingoane (Tebza) who rapped some of the lyrics. Now only Nhlanhla and Theo remain, after Tebza was tragically shot dead in a road rage incident in Soweto in February 2004.
Not only is their music inspired, but the band's sense of style is something else. They draw a lot of fashion inspiration from the days of Sophiatown, the unique mixed...

Review of Sibongile - Mafikizolo
Advantages: Disadvantages: Dangerous to the clueless
...Jo'burg (as it's known) has plenty to offer locals and residents, but not too much to see for tourists. It is a fairly large city with little sites and not a very long cultural history. These days tourists travel to Soweto to observe shanti life in the shebeens and 'locations', but this is a very dangerous thing to do. That is about the only significant thing to do whilst visiting Johannesburg. The nightlife centres in areas such as Rosebank and Melville, and if you know where to go, this can be great. Jo'burg holds an annual cultural music festival, which is great to attend. If you are into Afro-jazz and Kwaito, this is this place to be. Jo'burg boasts huge shopping malls which is great to check out if you are into spending money, and with the exchange rate being what it is, you could score a few bargains....

Review of Johannesburg (South Africa)
Advantages: 11 tracks of splendour Disadvantages: None
...Originally released in 1986, "Graceland" was created after Paul Simon heard the album "Gum Boots: Accordion Jive Hits - Volume II". This album was full of extremely happy up tempo music which Simon immediately fell in love with. It turned out that the music came from Soweto, South Africa. So guess where Simon went?
As many of you will be aware, the groupl "Ladysmith Black Mumbazo" featured in this album, and have later gone on to the acclaimed fame of doing a baked bean advert. What you may not know is that they were not the only South African group to feature on the album. In fact, three other groups appeared, these being: the Boyoyo Boys Band (used on the "Gum Boots" album), Tao Ea Matsekha, and General M.D. Shirinda and the Gaza Sisters.
The music on the album is second to none, and there is not a single track that lets...
Advantages: Very, very different. Disadvantages: None for me.
...Polar Bear - Held on the tips of fingers
The UK Jazz scene is thriving lately, especially the fusion jazz/acoustic/electronica/dance styles. This album released in 2005 has nine tracks only, but when you consider that most of them are five minutes long at least, that aint bad.
Who are Polar Bear?
Drummer Seb Rochford
Tenor & Baritone Sax, Pete Wareham
Tenor, Mark Lockheart
Double Bass, Tom Herbert
Leafcutter John (cool name), Mandolin and Electronics
Not heard of them?
Neither had I until they got nominated for the Mercury Music awards in 2005 and I got a link through to them after reading up about Soweto Kinch, another British jazz rising star (Alto Sax and rapping).
The music is in no way what most people that dislike Jazz think it might be. It is wacky, comedic almost, frantic, fun, very, very cool.
They...
....
More R&B, all about a split up, with some added vocals from Mary J Blige, very angsty in a soulful way, okay, not great. 6/10.
Track 10. Forgive them father.
To me the best song on the whole CD. A mixture of rap, soulful singing, dub like vocals. I cannot work out whether she is down on men in power, music bosses, or just men in general, but it is certainly a powerful song. She throws in bits like Soweto, Cain and Abel, wow. "Caeser and Bruts, Jesus and Judas, backstabbers do this"....what a line. great. 10/10.
Track 11. Every Ghetto, every City.
Off we go on another musical journey, this time a strong 70's funk backing, supporting Luryn telling her story of growing up. 7/10.
Track 12. Nothing even matters.
Now soul, pure n simple, lovely song, lyrically quite weak but musically it is a 'dreamy' song, almost Mowtown meets trance...
...?
No.
I don't believe in a god.
Do you ever get lonely?
Yes.
I am useless in my own company.
If my wife and kids are away for any more than day without me I get restless and depressed. I end up pigging out on take-aways, watch endless films and sleep a lot.
Have you ever cried inside?
Kind of, I suppose I am a bit of a soft git, I get very emotional when I read a sad story in a newspaper (like the two wee girls who were killed on Tuesday when they ran out in front of a car).
I cried when I saw a man murdered on the telly, not a pretend murder in a film, a real murder in Soweto, SA, the BBC were filming a mob who chased a guy out of a house and stabbed him to death in front of the camera, the image really shocked me and I can still see it clearly when ever I think about it.
What is the most embarrassing thing you have...
Advantages: Solid performances. Disadvantages: Timid direction and writing.
...Isabella is convinced of her husband?s innocence.
Gavin Hood?s last film ?Tsotsi? garnered a Best Foreign Film Oscar for its story of a young thug from Soweto who has to take care of a baby. As far as I was concerned, it was an okay film. The same is true of Hood?s latest offering that takes a current political hot potato and tries to give it a human face. But as with his previous picture this one pulls its punches, reducing the emotional impact of the story. The problem is that the director just doesn?t go far enough. We don?t see enough of Isabella?s breakdown when the truth is known. We don?t see enough of the political jockeying going on behind the scenes. And we don?t see enough of the torture. I know it sounds weird and sadistic, but we need to see more of what Anwar goes through to fully bring home the horror of what is happening to him...
