Please Be Cautious With Soya
Review of Sainsbury Soya Milk Long Life by
vinodgm
Advantages: Many supposedly - please see op
Disadvantages: Many supposedly - please see op
...the soybeans in the form of a milky white liquid. The bean residue or "okara" is removed. The resulting unsweetened soya milk is packaged and shipped to supermarkets and grocery stores.
They come in several variations and pack sizes. I picked up the Long Life, Calcium-enriched and sweetned version in the 500ml. pack for £0.65. Thank goodness I bought the 500ml and not the 1 liter pack. As for "long life" I will certainly not be able to confirm this since the stuff ended up in my dustbin about 30 seconds after I had the first sip.
I do not think that I have to give you my appraisal. I think you all know the answer.
Well thats my bit on Soya Milk be it from Sainsbury's, Tesco, Safeway or anywhere else. End of opinion? Not yet. Please read on.
In order to get the answers to my questions I decided to do a bit of research and boy was I...

Provamel Alpro Soya milk - the lifeline....
Review of Provamel Soya Milk by
Fuzzy98
Advantages: Health benefits and tastes good too...
Disadvantages: Quite expensive compared to cows milk
...like me, then it doesn't spill everywhere and leave a trail of milk across the table!
Product
Provamel Alpro Soya is a soya based alternative to cow or goat's milk. It is aimed at people who are either allergic to milk or intolerant to lactose, although it is enjoyed by many who simply want to include soya as part of their healthy diet. It is available in sweetened (with apple juice) or unsweetened in either UHT (long life) or fresh from the chiller cabinet. You can also buy an organic version, although I have only seen this available in the UHT formula. From my experience though, unless you detest sweet things then do not opt for the unsweetened version - I uttered expletives when I tasted it!
The drink itself is made mainly from water and hulled soya beans and, you will be relieved to know, it looks almost identical to dairy...

Sorry cows, I'm on the Soya drink for now
Review of Tesco Value Soya Milk by
SusanLesley
Advantages: Tastes OK, good for the 'diet', good price
Disadvantages: Not quite as good as real milk!
...to be basically the same product in cheaper packaging. This product costs 65p whereas the others range from 69p to £1.27. On that note I may well try the 69p version next time as it is ‘calcium enriched’ and I admit that I am concerned about my calcium intake on this eating plan.
Anyway back to the opinion in hand - I assume that it is called ‘Soya Drink’ as opposed to ‘Soya Milk’ because it is an alternative to milk as opposed to being an actual type of milk.
The milk comes in one litre ‘Tetra Pac’ cartons emblazoned with the Tesco Value colours of bright blue and white stripes; so that when it’s in your trolley everyone can see that you have the good sense to save money where you can. Unless you’re a bit of a snob of course and then you have to hide it underneath other shopping!
This is a ‘long life’ product and will keep for a couple...

Have you ever seen a Soya cow...
Review of Alpro Soya by
Suzi75
Advantages: Dairy Free, Enriched with Calcium & Other Essential Vitamins.
Disadvantages: Takes a little getting used to.
...% of your calcium RDA is also included.
~~Cholesterol~~
This pack contains nil cholesterol and can reduce higher cholesterol. This is if you include 25g of Soya protein per day, in a diet low in saturated fat. Each 250ml glass of Alpro Soya contains 9.3g of soya protein. So, you would have to drink rather a lot to reap the benefit!
~~~~~Storage~~~~~
This product should be stored in the fridge and once opened the contents should be used within five days or discarded. Unopened cartons have quite a long 'shelf life', one purchased several days ago has a best before date of at least a month ahead and this is quite typical.
~~~~~Summary~~~~~
The pack stated this can be introduced as part of a balanced diet from six months and is suitable as a main milk source from two years. Although, Jorja's dietician at Birmingham Children...

Soya wanna cut down on dairy?
Review of Tesco Value Soya Milk by
antsss
Advantages: Great price, tastes fine, just as good as the expensive brands
Disadvantages: Old-fashioned carton is hard to open without spilling the milk everywhere
...OK OK, so my op titles are getting worse. But give me the benefit of the doubt! Today's my first birthday on Ciao, and aptly, my 50th review. Hopefully this review will also make me turn purple too (not literally, silly!). So let's celebrate the occasion with a look at one of the best products Tesco have come up with in their (mostly) great Value range - the Soya Milk.
--> WHY SOYA MILK?
If you've read back through a few of my ops, you might have noticed that I generally avoid sugary, starchy food and get my vitamins and minerals from fruit and veg. This is more commonly known as a low carbohydrate way of eating, although I wouldn't want to scare you off in the second paragraph by putting too much emphasis on that!
Anyway, regular cow's milk has a relatively high sugar content - in fact, the lower in fat your milk is, the more...

Alpro Soya Milk - widely sold, great creamy taste
Review of Alpro Soya by
webfoot
Advantages: It tastes brilliant
Disadvantages: Like all competitors, only in 1 litre packs - why not 0.75 and 1.5 ltr packs
...Yes, Alpro Soya is a market leader with the advantage of a Europe-wide distribution and yummy taste. I managed to buy it this year in supermarkets in La Palma (one of the smaller Canary Islands) and now in Duzce, a small town near the Black Sea in Turkey where I am on a short work assignent (Duzce was the scene of horrific earthquake in 1999 in which 19,000 peope died.)
Alpro isn't the cheapest around, but my wife, another soya milk convert, moans if I buy any other brand but Alpro. I bought a soya milk machine and the result was a tasteless liquid which only I would drink - so the machine has been mothballed and I have a 5-litre storage container full of unused soya beans!
My wife and I both follow the "Zone" diet which isn't really a diet at all but , for us at least, an exciting and delicious change in eating habits. A 60...

Alpro Soya Caramel Dessert
Review of Provamel Alpro Soya yogurts by
Cassybobo
Advantages: Tasty Dairy free packed with vitamins and omega3 & 6
Disadvantages: price
...My daughter loves Yoghurt but has recently developed a lactose intolerence, at 6yrs of age
it's very hard to explain that although she loves certain foods they may be not so good for her. it was important to find tasty alternatives for her that still give her the vitamins and nutrients that a growing child needs.
Alpro Soya care for the environment as they don't buy soya beans that are harvested in the rain forest! and buy their soya beans via direct contact with their farmers rather than on the open market.
The cardboard packaging has a picture of the dessert on the front and it looks nice. There are 4 plastic pots containing the Caramel desserts in the pack, All packaging is recyclable .
PRODUCT
Alpro Soya Caramel dessert is a tasty substitute for yoghurts. At £1.40/pack of 4 they are not the cheapest but in Tesco...

Soya vs Lungs and bladders.
Review of Soya Protein by
milleniumzeus
Advantages: Fantastic versatility, great taste, very healthy.
Disadvantages: None i can think of.
...Now I don’t quite know why this product comes under diet and nutrition as I think it is wasted here. It is a food product that I think should be given a lot more publicity than it actually receives. It is extremely versatile and can be used in a huge variety of dishes and recipes. I am talking about “Natures harvest”, Soya protein mince.
I do not like to eat meat; however I am a sausage lover and cannot resist a lovely sausage. I am also a pie and spaghetti bolognaise lover. These three foods constitute my favourites when it comes to food.
I have been put off meat for quite some years, knowing people in the meat trade, and also doing my own research. Unless it’s organic, and even then I have my doubts, modern meat today is a mixture of water, a bit of meat, antibiotics, hormones, preservatives, and whatever diseases we decide...

Pure Soya. Good stuff.
Review of Matthews Pure Dairy free soya spread by
Steve_pc
Advantages: Availability. Good price. Taste. Versatile.
Disadvantages: None.
...If you've always wanted a great, easily available, reasonably priced vegan spread, for whatever reason, be it lactose intolerance or some other animal reaction etc, look no further. Pure Soya from Matthews Foods, made in the UK will suffice in all those departments. And really taste good and be versatile too.
If you have read other opinions of mine, you will know I am vegan, and losing the basic spread from my bread was a little disappointing. One day I found this in Waitrose. Tried it and never looked back. At 79p a tub of 500ml, (69p in Asda, but 99p in Holland & Barret!!!) it is good value, because let me see - how much are you going to use in one go for simple bread spreading purposes? Not that much - and even if you do use it for cooking, go ahead - it works great! I have had many an apple crumble and other such niceties...

So Good Soya Milk
Review of So Good Soya Milk by
stocko
Advantages: Lovely cream taste, great with cereals
Disadvantages: tastes rank with your cup of tea
...I found out recently that I am ‘intolerant’ to all dairy products. SHOCK, HORROR!
I was of course in complete despair as I love milk, live for cheese, and didn’t have a clue how an earth would I cope with out my Friday cream cake! Nervously I popped down to the local supermarket to see what they had on offer in the way of dairy-free alternatives to my favorites.
I was pretty disappointed with my dairy free cheese and have now had to turn to a boring flapjack on Friday lunchtime, but was pleasantly surprised with the soya milk I found.
It called So Good and can be found with the dairy projects in the chilled cabinet of most supermarkets. It’s basically a blend of soya, water and added vitamins. It can be bought in the usual milk sizes and lasts about 5 days once it is opened, but an unopened carton lasts about 2-4 weeks...
