Advantages: Big stars, some comedy, well acted
Disadvantages: A little too long

...What can I say - Space Cowboys!! The not so big hit of 2000 starring Clint Eastwood (who also directed and produced the film), Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner (yes he is still alive!!). The film starts by showing our four heroes as young (yep in the 50s) pilots and engineers working on the supersonic/space testing program for the American airforce. Suddenly withdrawn from the program because of NASA deciding to send a monkey into space they all go their separate ways. Forty years on our not so young heroes are asked to help out with an ailing Russian communications satellite. By using blackmail they manage to convince the world that they are the only ones able to fix the satellite and must therefore be allowed to finally fulfil their dream of going into space (why they couldn't just pay $14 million like everyone...

IT'S THE RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOYS

Advantages: The plot is original
Disadvantages: The beginning drags on a bit

...Although this film did not exactly straight away catch my eye, after seeing it was either this or Charlies Angels on offer, i had no option what to see! The film is based around 4 ex pilots dreams coming true, and at the same time saving the earth. Clint Eastwood stars and also Tommy Lee Jones does a good job of being central to a love relationship. Although aging now, i did think that he came across as charming and loveable! The beginning of the film is in black and white and in my opinion the start is a bit slow, but, soon after i became engrossed with the four well known good actors gelling the plot together. Space Cowboys although undoubtedly about space exploration and politics, but there is a very human feel to it.Concentrating on the aging mens struggle to leave their day jobs for one last chance of being heroes. Space Junk

Advantages: Good cast
Disadvantages: Poor plot

...needs to go and fix it? Clint.......Who is he taking with him? His old buddies who never got to go up! Special effects. As with all of these space films, it seems hard to recreate zero gravity on earth. But as with "Apollo 13" before it, it gets away with this perfectly. A lot of the special effects concerning explosions and rockets, etc are obviously Computer generated and lack that "finished" touch. More home made than Hollywood made! Music. Totally lacking and would have been good to include some older tracks to go with the "space Cowboys". This would have given some atmosphere to the film and also provided some entertainment for my ears rather than listening to poor dialogue. Humour. Hmm...What humour? Considering it is classed as a commedy, I had trouble unearthing any jokes. It does try which I feel is always a big mistake...

...Space Cowboys is a super-predictable cliche-fest that critics would've trashed had Eastwood not starred and directed. Here's the plot rundown: four aging astronauts (Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, and James Garner) must fly into space on the shuttle to repair a Russian satellite. Eastwood designed the satellite's guidance system and is the only person qualified to fix it. He demands that his old (senior citizen) USAF buddies round out the team much to the chagrin of the mission director. Old Timers In Space

Advantages: Good Story, Strong Performances, Good Effects
Disadvantages: Dissapointing DVD-Rom Section

..., NASA is faced with obsolete technology none of engineers understand. So Frank Corvin and his team are called in to assist with the repair of the technology before there are catastrophic consequences. But the price is the fulfilment of their dream, to fly into space. With time desperately short, NASA is forced to agree. Space Cowboys is a story of bravery and glory and the fulfilment of a dream. The movie is a drama, not an action film, so the story unfolds at a steady pace rather than a rush. A liberal splattering of humour stops the film taking itself to seriously in the mid section and a strong performance from the star cast and a solid story keep the film compelling to the end. Space Pensioners

Advantages: Fun, Easy on the brain
Disadvantages: Only a one watch film

...I picked up this film without any great expectations for it. Having read reports on the internet regarding it, I wasn't overly impressed. Despite this however it still looked like it could be fun so one sleepy Sunday afternoon I popped down to local video shop rented out the DVD and gave it a spin. The film kicks off over 40 years in the past. Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland 4 icons more familiar to my parents on the silver screen play Team Daedelus a special US Airforce squad. The squad is basically a fore-runner for NASA testing high tech fast planes on the edge of the atmosphere. The four's true dream being able to recognise their hope of actually going into space. This dream however never happens, NASA is launched and the four end up leaving the Airforce and leading very different lives...

Advantages: For lovers of the film, the period or the music of John Barry.
Disadvantages: A bit too easy listening for some

...Midnight Cowboy was director John Schlesinger's 1969 classic Oscar winning masterpiece portraying the shattered optimism of the American dream starring Jon Vought (father of Angelina Jolie) as male-prostitute Joe Buck and Dustin Hoffman as his sleazy scheming friend Enrico 'Ratso' Rizzo. FOUR OLD FARTS GO LUNAR

Advantages: Good fun, never a dull moment

...Space Cowboys was one of those films that you see in the video shop, recognise some big names in the starring roles, but you have no idea what the film is really like. I can't recall this one being at the cinema, let alone reading a review in the press, so I was taking a bit of a chance when I hired this one. (The guy in the video shop said it was excellent, but then he would say that, wouldn't he?). Even the cover design was pretty dull, so I couldn't say, "Well, the cover looked good!". The verdict? The film is an extremely effective blend of gentle humour, and space-age thriller, and I for one thoroughly enjoyed the movie from start to finish.
