...Harman/Kardon seem to be taking the multimedia market seriously by releasing a speaker set that wouldn't look out of place in a modern living room/study. With a design that is a welcome change from drab beige boxes, you are sure to attract admiring glances from your friends. These speakers really do look the part with their slim stands, contoured driver enclosures and the imposing black-grey finish. The subwoofer is a neat round cylinder that can be situated on your desk without too much bother. The setup of these speakers is very easy. Every plug is colour-coded to the corrosponding input on your sound card, and the speaker plugs are even shaped so there it's impossible to connect them the wrong way round. ...Having owned a Harman Kardon DVD22 since June 2005 I think that I am well placed to write a review on the unit; but before I talk about the DVD22 I feel that I must give a little background and therefore must go back 1 year, when I had the DVD21 (by the same company). I bought the DVD21 as an ex-demo model in-store for £150.00, within 6 months I had returned the unit as it was making excessive noise when playing disks, the shop that I purchased from took the unit back and it went away for repair, when I received the unit back, the only thing that was left of the unit I purchased was the case, all the innards had been replaced, essentially it was an old case with a brand new interior. That unit lasted another 6 months before going wrong, this time the company swapped it out for the newer DVD22 (although I had to pay another £100). So... Read review

...heard them play a last week and decided on them. I tried to reason with him that they were too expensive. He shot back that they were better than the 6.1 and the creature II and value for money for the quality they delivered, in fact, they were lowly priced for the quality they delvered. It was infact a steal. Another friend too had the same opinion. And we decided that we buy these. The result - orders were placed for two sets - one for us and one for my good friend. Purchased them through PCW @ £109.06 each with free delivery. They have those light touch volume controls on the right speaker just like the creature II and a bass control knob on the rear of the bass tube. The two satellite speakers are heavy in weight for their size and give remarkable definition and with the bass boost twist at the back of the sub, you'll be amazed how easy the balanced tone can be adjusted. The speakers are great at high volumes. I am yet to turn them up fully! They also sound very soild even at low volume. I would almost say the sound is crisper and clearer than my £250 sony hifi. ---Appearance--- These speakers look the business! Harman Kardon share designs with Apple computers and this is shown. The satellite speakers are set in a clear casing which shows off the wiring superbly. The satellites are made up of 4 dome tweeters and have a heavy blue rubber stand. The sub is the centre piece. ...looking. After about five minutes of looking at boxes and not being able to make up my mind, the advisor suggested the Harman / Kardon SoundSticks 2 stating that they were brilliant. So I had a look, opened up the box to take a look and was surprised at what i found. The speakers are tiny! About 30cm tall with four small tweeter sized cones inside. This immediately put me off because I KNEW I wanted some loud speakers but the design is fantastic, they look really stylish and sleek (just like me :P ) The price was right at £139 and my best friend that came with said he had heard them before and thought I should definately buy them. ...I received these speakers as a Birthday present in March from a friend. I was thrilled with them as I had been desperate for a docking station or speakers to play my iPod on. The speakers: The speakers are very attractive and compact yet produce a rich deep bass sound, which is not always present on speakers of this size. They are very lightweight and fold to close at 15 ounces and 8 inches wide, 5.4 inches deep and 1.2 inches thick. The box the speakers come in quotes "With four AA batteries your speakers will play continuously for twenty-four hours" which sounds brilliant but in my experience on 2 x AA batteries they will play for 19 hours. As well as built in controls there is a wireless remote but you do have to be quite near to the speakers and at the right angle for the remote to actually work! The speakers also act... Read review

...-white 'concept' approach in my view. The transformer is clumsy and very large and heavy in comparison with other sound products and this was disappointing in an otherwise well considered cable management approach. Luckily the cable length was adequate to hide the bulk of it and power requirements often require a seperate power supply, this is not a USB or Firewire powered device so an additional place to plug it in is necessary. At least the plug and transformer are not integrated, this is inexcusable where a typical setup makes power source economy vital. The overall form language of the speakers is original and appealingly distinctive. The speakers do strive to be visually differentiated in a cluttered market and JBL are a sub-brand of Harman multimedia, which has a good reputation as a market leader in acoustic products. With a beautifully crafted real wood veneer, a very modern looking silver alloy driver and a gold coloured metallic tweeter protected by silver mesh they manage to mix the old with contemporary perfectly. Too many speaker's within the S1's price and performance range have a very bland, old fashioned appearance. At the other end of the spectrum very modern and exotically styled speakers do so at the expensive of looking a bit cheap and plasticky. The S1's balanced appearance of old with new was what first attracted me to them . One of the unique features I like most about the design is the fact that the round metal mesh protecting the tweeter can be removed, in the same way you would remove the speaker cover's.
