Is Speech and Language Therapy for you?
Review of Becoming a Speech and Language Therapy Student by
bluejules
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...As many of you know, I am at university studying to become a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). I decided that this is what I wanted to do a couple of years ago and so far, overall, I'm enjoying the course.
What is Speech and Language Therapy?
When I tell people I am at university, they immediately ask what I am studying. When I say 'Speech and Language Therapy' some people say 'so you can help me to talk', this really annoys me as there are so many more dimensions to this career. It also disappoints me that so many people are ill-informed, so I'd like to think this review might help some people that don't know exactly what s a SLT is. Also I hope to provide information on to people who think they might have interest in enrolling on a course.. However, there are also lots of people who appreciate the type of course I am...

Studying Speech and Language
Review of Speech by
bluejules
Advantages: Great course
Disadvantages: Hard Work
...As many of you know I am currently in my first year at Newcastle University, studying Speech and Language Sciences. As my first year is over and there are only the exams left I thought I would share my experiences of the course. I hope this helps you or someone you know decide whether this is the course and university for them. I have tried to keep this as brief as possible but I am writing it with the potential student in mind so it is a rather long review. (sorry)
Speech and Language Sciences
When I tell people I am at university, they immediately ask what I am studying. When I say 'Speech and Language Sciences' some people say 'oh! So you can teach me to talk properly'. And others think I'm learning a foreign language. This really annoys me as there are so many more dimensions to this career. It also disappoints me...

Talk to me!
Review of Talking Together: A Parent's Guide to the Development, Enrichment, and Problems of Speech and Language - Katherine F. Schetz by
bluejules
Advantages: Great book about speech and language in children
Disadvantages: illustrations are just black and white, price
...As many of you know, I am starting university in a few weeks to study speech and language therapy (SLT). I am really excited and I want to read as much as I can around the subject before in start. Having already read 'A Career in Speech and Language Therapy' and 'Karina has Down Syndrome' and really enjoyed them, I was looking for something else on this subject. When I was placing an order on Waterstones.com I was quite near the price to be eligible for free postage so I looked for some books on speech and language. I found this one and ordered it though it was out of stock. About 5 weeks later it arrived and I've recently just finished reading it.
This book is excellent. A speech and language pathologist and a paediatrician wrote this book as a guide for parents and carers of young children so there is no long-winded terminology...

It's more than just talking
Review of Speech and Language Therapist by
Popalee
Advantages: fun, challenging, rewarding
Disadvantages: not gonna get you rich, can be frustrating
...My career as a speech therapist began in 2001, and has, so far, spanned 3 countries. I bore people to tears telling them about my work and the children I am priveliged to spend so much of my time with. I honestly can't think of anything I would rather do, and so I have decided to try to share some of the reasons I love being a speech and language therapist so much. In the interests of objectivity I promise to mention some of the frustrations I've experienced as well.
Let's start by de-mistifying the term "Speech and Language Therapist", often abbreviated in the UK to SALT or shortened to Speech Therapist (and known in the USA and Australia as a Speech and Language Pathologist). I've lost count of the number of times people have asked me,"Ah, so you can help me with my diction then!" (Well yes, I probably could, but this is not what I...

A career in SALT?
Review of A Career in Speech and Language Therapy - Myra Kersner, Jannet A Wright by
bluejules
Advantages: Excellent book with lots of relevent information
Disadvantages: None!
...As many of you know I'm going to university in September, to study a degree in Speech and Language Therapy. When I was at the Open Day at De Montfort University, one of the lecturers recommended this book and I am so glad she did. It was also recommended at the Newcastle University Open Day, but by this time I already had the book!
* "The role of a speech and language therapist (SALT) is to assess and treat speech, language and communication problems in people of all ages to enable them to communicate to the best of their ability. They may also work with people who have eating and swallowing problems." NHS Careers*
The book is written by Jannet A Wright and Myra Kersner whom have both worked as SALT's. It is written for anyone who is interested in a career as a speech and language therapist.
I ordered the book on 22nd February...

Why me?
Review of Speech and Language Therapy by
danthepianoman
Advantages: Helps those who suffer with speech and language issues.
Disadvantages: None.
...I don't quite know if this is in the right area, but I am going to share my own experiences of having a speech and language therapist.
Up until the age of about 15/ 16, I had a stammer that I had suffered with for most of my life. During this time, I was bullied because of it and I felt as though there was no way out.
However, I spent a lot of this time going through speech therapy to enable and help me to be able to speak 'normally' again. And this has got to be one of the best times of my life so far.
As strange as it may seem, actually making me face and realise my problems seemed to help me at the time. I came to realise that it wasn't me that had the problem, but that the problem in some ways lay with those who were bullying me.
I now realise that I am digressing away from the main point of this review...

The Only Way to Learn a Language
Review of Member Advice on Learning a Language by
velcrogirl
Advantages: includes a recommended list of films
Disadvantages: need to own a DVD player
...The Only Way to Learn a Language
There is only one way to learn a foreign language if you are not able to move to that country. Watch as much television in the language as possible!
All language teachers will sneer at any film that has been dubbed, but according to my experience these actually teach you more (and are often more enjoyable!). They say you should only watch films in the original language. And yes dubbing is horrible; watching the actors lips move completely out of sequence from the speech, but let me say it is worth getting used to!
I am currently learning yet another language at University and this time round I have discovered a wonderful new invention… The DVD! These must have been designed for language students! Most of the first DVDs were produced with multi-lingual soundtracks. This way I can learn Italian...

Mountain Language
Review of Mountain Language - Harold Pinter by
sottovoce82
Advantages: Clear and important political message
Disadvantages: Direct, dim, and disturbing
...activist himself and he states his political opinion through his speeches and even the interviews made with him. I particularly liked the character of the young woman in this play, for she is still able to ridicule the system by imitating its language. At one point in the play she is told that there must be something wrong with the computer but when a certain person takes care of it everything will be alright, so she asks: "Can I fuck him? If I fuck him, will everything be all right?" This might not be the best of reactions, you might say, but it is the only one available. Obviously this system encourages people to speak its language and endorse only its ideas. The officers' sexual harassment and demeaning remarks to the young girl conveyed to her that using her body is the only language that works.

For me, the play includes three...

Watch your language
Review of Lost for Words: The Use and Abuse of the English Language - John Humphrys by
torr
Advantages: A telling critique of the manipulation of language for political ends
Disadvantages: Not quite as convincing about the "mangling" of language
...John Humphrys is one of a number of writers and media luminaries who have lately turned their attention to modern trends in the use of the English language. Like most of his confrères, he finds much to deplore.
Humphrys' book 'Lost for Words' is aptly subtitled 'The Mangling and Manipulating of the English language'. In 'mangling' and 'manipulating' it encompasses two distinct themes. The first is how clumsy or convoluted usage can rob words of their meaning and impede clear thought. The second is how cynically contrived usage can mislead people and manipulate their thinking.
On the first of these themes he is interesting and often amusing, but he says little that is new, and I am not sure that he always gives a fair hearing to the counter-arguments. On the second he is both knowledgeable and powerfully...

Freedom Of Speech Review
Review of Freedom Of Speech - Ghetto by
Marvell
Advantages: Fast paced, flow filled, production is amazing
Disadvantages: More producers should have been used.
...Freedom Of Speech.
This grime filled album is best to date with punchlines, war dubs directed at the boy better know camp and direct in your face lyrics. Ghetto is by far the best grime artist throughout this album, the flow is consistent, lyrics more powerful than ever and bars at its peak Buss 1 featuring Devlin is the best track in my opinion it is a violent fast paced track which brings back Ghetto's violent side in which he left on Ghetto Gospel (his previous mixtape). If your a grime newbie or an oldie this album | | |
