...Speed limits are something that probably most drivers consider as having to be adhered to by everyone except himself or herself. It would certainly seem so judging by the way drivers behave on our roads. As a society we have laws to govern the way that we behave towards each other and they are for the general benefit of ALL. It would be impossible to run a society otherwise, without descending into anarchy. So if we have a law that limits the speed of traffic on a road then that is that. Break the law and risk prosecution for doing so. Some people will argue that because of the inaccuracy of speedometers in cars and lorries and the parallax error that can occur when viewing a speedometer, there should be some leeway about enforcing the speed limits. Speed Doesnt Kill

Advantages: A reasonable limit for all
Disadvantages: Unfair to the genuinely good driver

...Everybody keeps on telling me that speed kills, but it doesn’t. People off on holiday to the great blue yonder travel at over five hundred miles per hour in the big jets and it doesn’t kill them. Fighter pilots chase each other all over the skies at mach 2 and it doesn’t kill them. If you jumped off the tallest building in the world you would hurtle downwards and reach speeds of over one hundred miles per hour but the being killed bit wouldn’t happen until you reached the road below and stopped travelling. I’m not being pedantic or even facetious; I’m just trying to point out that it isn’t the actual speed that kills you but the sudden and instant deceleration that does all the damage. Now relate this to motorway speed limits and you should realise that it isn’t the speed that causes...

NO MOTORWAY SPEED LIMITS

Advantages: getting rid of congestion
Disadvantages: ok at first you'd get the usual jokers racing

...I think they should do away with motorway speed limits except for extreme weather conditions and for heavy goods veicheles. To educate the people the government should introduce a separte driving test for motorway driving as it is not part of the current driving test and motorway lessons are optional. You should need a test pass to drive on the motorways. The autobahns in germany have no limits and have less accidents. Congestion would be made obselete under my proposals and because if the limits were reduced congestion would build up causing more polution whereas my idea would have every car running optimaly. Ever been on a deserted motorway at about 3 in the morning just wishing you were home, in a car that wouldnt break sweat at 130? email me if you agree Id appriciate some feed back....

...Who thinks that the motorway speed limit should be increased. From 70mph to 90mph tops. Reason why the general rule of thumb is before you get caught you have to be doing 10% over the speed limit plus 2mph so on a motorway that is going to work out at 79mph before a speed camera thinks about getting you (probably have just jinks myself). ...I heard on the radio yesterday that the government are going to REDUCE motorway speed limits to 50 mph. Do you think it is a good idea? Because I don't...and here's why 1) Currently the limit is 70mph and most drivers do 80+ mph. 2) Lorries are currently restricted to 55mph and coaches to 65mph (I think I'm right here, but it could be 50 and 60 respectively). so... if the limit was made to 50mph, vehicles of all types would (supposedly) be travelling at 50mph. Can you imagine following the same lorry for 3 hrs or whatever on a motorway at 50mph? what is the point of motorways if they are no quicker (if you can only do 50 on the motorway then you may as well take the A-roads or dual carriageways instead where you can do either 40 or 60 - and it wouldn't be as boring as the motorways!). fine but this would lead to...

...Speed Kills !! ~ ~ So say the advertising posters for the “Safer Driving” campaigns, and, off course, they are absolutely correct. Speed does in fact kill, but there again, so do many other things. ~ ~ The question that is at issue here is not if speed kills. We all know that you have much more chance of walking away from a shunt at 30mph than you have at 80mph. That’s only common sense. What is being asked is if the present speed limit of 70mph at present in force on our motorways (yes, it applies in Ireland too) is a realistic one, and if it saves lives by preventing accidents. ~ ~ My own immediate gut reaction is that the limit is not realistic given the highly maintained cars and vehicles that are the norm in today’s society. These are all excuses/reasons that I have heard in my year or so while working as a police officer when people have been found speeding or, more seriously, involved in an accident. I work in one small part of a built up area and yet there are several accidents on the roads every day that require police attendance. Thanks to a very effective advertising campaign and a change in social attitudes the amount of drink drivers on the roads is falling rapidly. However, I am constantly amazed at the amount of drivers out there who are totally anti drink driving, but who will merrily break the speed limit on almost a daily basis.
